An 18-year-old Streamwood man has been charged in connection with the fatal shooting of another man following a traffic dispute on Sunday, Streamwood Police and the Cook County State’s Attorney Office announced on Wednesday.
Jonathan Mejia, of the 300 block of Cedar Court, has been charged with first-degree murder and aggravated unlawful use of a weapon in connection with the shooting, which took place just before 5:30 p.m. on Sunday on Bartlett Road.
The Daily Herald reported that Meija was ordered to be held without bond after appearing in court on Wednesday. He is next scheduled to appear in court on March 25.
Scott Mattison, 46, Streamwood was shot and killed in the incident after police said Mattison approached the Mejia’s vehicle following a traffic dispute, police said. Mattison was shot several times and died later after being taken to St. Alexius Medical Center.
Police declined to give more specifics of the nature of the traffic dispute on Monday, citing an active, ongoing investigation. The Daily Herald reported the dispute started after Mattison was attempting to back his vehicle into his driveway. Rather than wait for Mattison, prosecutors said Mejia drove around him, which prompted Mattison to follow Meija.
The two became engaged in a dispute in which Mattison reportedly reached inside of Mejia’s vehicle and struck him in the face, the Daily Herald reported. Mattison was then shot several times in an encounter that was captured on video by another driver and posted to social media.
A spokeswoman said Mattison’s cause of death was multiple gunshot wounds and that his death is considered a homicide.
A GoFundMe effort to help cover the costs of Mattison’s funeral has raised more than $13,000 as of Wednesday. Mattison leaves behind two daughters, according to GoFundMe.
