Paul Durousseau Early Life

Paul Durousseau was born in Beaumont Texas on August 11, 1970. Soon after his birth his family would move to Los Angeles California after his father deserted the family.

Paul Durousseau would be arrested a couple of times for having an unconcealed hand gun. In 1992 Paul would enlist in the United States Army and would be stationed in Germany for a number of years. Authorities believe he may have started to sexually assault and murder women during this time however nothing was ever proven. Durousseau would get married in 1995

In 1996 Paul Durousseau would be transferred to Fort Benning Georgia and within a year he would be charged with the sexual assault of a teenage girl, however he would later be cleared of the charges. In 1997 Paul would be charged with being in possession of stolen goods and would be court martial in 1999 and would be dishonorably dischared.

Paul Durousseau and his wife would move to Jacksonville Florida where the couple would have two daughters.

Soon after he was acquitted of rape charges in Fort Benning Georgia back in 1997 the body of Tracy Habersham was found. The woman had been sexually assaulted and strangled to death with a cord. Paul Durousseau would later confess to the murder

In 1999 Durousseau would murder Tyresa Mack inside of her apartment, the woman was sexually assaulted and murdered. Paul was seen leaving her apartment carrying a tv set.

In 2001 Paul Durousseau was charged with the sexual assault of woman in Jacksonville and when convicted would be sentenced to thirty days in jail plus two years of probation.

In 2002 the body of Nicole Williams was found in the bottom of a ditch in Jacksonville, the woman had been wrapped in a blanket after she was reported missing 48 hrs before

In 2003 the body of Nikia Kilpatrick was found inside of her apartment, Nikia had been sexually assaulted and murdered by strangulation with a cord. Nikia was six months pregnant at the time of her death

Later in 2003 Shawanda Denise McCalister was found sexually assaulted and murdered in her apartment. Like Nikia she was pregnant at the time of her death

The bodies of seventeen year old Jovanna Jefferson and nineteen year old Surita Cohen were found at the bottom of a ditch in close proximity to each other. Police believe the two women had been murdered ten days apart.

Paul Durousseau Conviction

Witnesses would tell police that they saw the last two victims with Paul Durousseau and he would soon be arrested. Paul was convicted of five murders and sentenced to death. In 2017 Durousseau death sentence was overturned and he is currently waiting for a resentencing

Death Row inmate Paul Durousseau has been brought back to the Duval County jail ahead of a hearing next week on his re-sentencing. 

Durousseau was convicted in the 1999 murder of 24-year-old Tyresa Mack, one of seven murders he was accused of committing from 1997 to 2003 in Jacksonville and Georgia.

After his conviction, prosecutors opted not to try him in the other murders.

Durousseau’s death sentence was thrown out in 2017 by the Florida Supreme Court, which ordered a new sentencing hearing. The high court rejected arguments for a new trial.

A Jacksonville cab driver killer who was convicted of killing one woman and suspected of killing four more could be taken off death row.

Paul Durousseau, a cab driver who befriended the women whom he was accused of killing, was sentenced to death in 2007. He became known as ”the “Cabbie Killer.”

Under a new Supreme Court opinion Durousseau will have to be resentenced in the wake of a new Supreme Court order that found some death sentences in Florida unconstitutional.

Durousseau was convicted and sentenced to death for killing Tyresa Mack, 24, who was found dead in her apartment in 1999. He was also charged in the deaths of four other Jacksonville women, but was never tried.

The Florida Supreme Court recently ruled that non-unanimous death penalty sentences after 2002 will have to be resentenced by a 12-member jury.

The 12-person jury will have to unanimously decide that the defendant should get the death penalty. It’s unclear when Durousseau will be resentenced.

The death penalty for Paul Durousseau, 46, has been thrown out by the Florida Supreme Court.

Durousseau was a taxi driver convicted in the 1999 murder of Tyresa Mack. He was sentenced to death in 2007. 

He was charged with murder in the deaths of five young women killed in Jacksonville between December 2002 and February 2003, but was only prosecuted in the Mack case. Two of the women were pregnant. 

German authorities suspect Durousseau may have killed several local women when he was stationed there with the Army during the early 1990s. Georgia law enforcement suspected Durousseau killed a woman near Fort Benning in 1997 before he was dishonorably discharged.

Tuesday’s decision cited a January 2016 U.S. Supreme Court ruling in a case known as Hurst v. Florida, saying, “Durousseau’s death sentence was imposed under an unconstitutional capital sentencing statute.”

The trial jury split on the death sentence was 10-2. The state Supreme Court threw out the death sentence since the jury was not unanimous.
