The Florida’s Supreme Court denies an appeal from a man convicted of three his ex-girlfriend and two other people in August 2002, then fled the country.

Pinkney “Chip” Carter, 60, was convicted of killing his ex-girlfriend, Liz Reed, her 16-year-old daughter, Courtney Smith, and Glen Pafford at Reed’s house in Arlington.

Carter was quickly identified as a suspect and later located in a Mexican jail, where he was arrested for carrying weapons into the country. He allegedly paid a $1,000 bribe to get out.

Carter was arrested nearly two years later working as a roofer in Kentucky he was extradited to Florida, convicted in 2005 of three counts of first-degree murder and sentenced to death.

His lawyers filed this appeal, claiming Carter’s trial lawyer did not call experts to tell the jury about his mental health risk factors and failed to to seek a change in venue.

On Thursday, the high court rejected those arguments. The justices added that had a change of venue motion been filed, it likely would have been denied.
