Roderick Byrd should die by lethal injection for a triple homicide in 2005, a Jefferson County jury recommended tonight after convicting him of capital murder earlier today.
The sentencing verdict is advisory. Circuit Court Judge Bill Cole will set the sentence on Aug. 6.
Byrd, 23, was convicted in the Nov. 24, 2005, shooting deaths of Kim Olney, 28; John Aylesworth, 42; and Dorothy Smith, 58, at the Airport Inn in Birmingham. All three were shot, execution style.
On the stand Friday, Byrd continued to maintain a co-defendant, Brandon Mitchell, killed all three people. Prosecutors contended that Byrd shot Aylesworth, while Mitchell killed Olney and Smith. Mitchell was sentenced to death in January.
