A northern Kentucky woman who pleaded guilty in the beating death of her 1-year-old son has been sentenced to 35 years in prison.

Stacey Schuchart, 32, of Dayton received the sentence Tuesday for the 2019 death of her son, 1-year-old Sean Buttery Jr.

On the night paramedics attempted to resuscitate 17-month-old Sean Buttery Jr., his mother Stacey Schuchart told them he had become unresponsive after hitting his head on the microwave.

What the coroner found later looked more like the aftermath of a car crash, Judge Karen Thomas said at Schuchart’s Sept. 2019 arraignment.

Schuchart initially pleaded not guilty in 2019 when she was arrested, but changed her plea to guilty in February to a single count of murder, according to documents filed in Campbell County Circuit Court.

The documents said Schuchart was home alone with her children in August 2019 when she called 911 to report Buttery was injured. Emergency responders arrived to find the boy in critical condition and he later died at a hospital.

Sean had a head wound at the time of his Aug. 6, 2019 death at Children’s Hospital, Thomas said. He also had fractures on both sides of his pelvis and throughout the rest of his skeleton. His bladder was detached and bleeding into his torso.

The paramedics who attempted to save him “observed lacerations that had scabbed over as well as bruises of varying colors across the boy’s body,” Thomas told the court.

An autopsy determined the death was caused by “homicidal violence,” documents state.

A Florida man accused of intentionally striking and killing a 75-year-old veteran with a car was “smiling” and “laughing” as he collided with the elderly pedestrian, authorities said.

Justyn Pennell was arrested for first-degree murder in the the fatal crash, which occurred in Hudson, Florida, about 40 miles northwest of Tampa.

Around 2:46 p.m. on Jan. 9, deputies received a call from Pennell, who advised dispatchers he had just “hit a man and he believed he killed him,” according to a criminal complaint obtained by Oxygen.com.

Pennell allegedly admitted that he mowed the man down intentionally, the complaint stated. When deputies arrived on the scene, detectives said, Pennell was thrilled with his actions.

“He was smiling and laughing when he struck the victim,” the complaint stated.

The 21-year-old man, who was uninjured in the crash, confessed to dispatchers before deputies even arrived on the scene, officials said.

Justyn Pennell crashed his 2004 Chrysler PT Cruiser into a power pole after colliding with the elderly man. His car was left inoperable, law enforcement stated.

The injured pedestrian was pronounced dead shortly before 3 p.m.

Deputies later recovered what appeared to be human hair and fibers from the victim’s T-shirt from the windshield of Pennell’s Chrysler.

During an interview with investigators, Pennell said he had been running errands shortly before the lethal crash. When he saw the elderly pedestrian, authorities said he made a U-turn in his Chrysler, and accelerated toward the man.

Justyn Pennell left his home on Jan. 9 with the sole intention of running someone over in his Chrysler, according to the Pasco County Sheriff’s Office. The 21-year-old allegedly had “thoughts” to kill someone for several months.

“This man is absolutely evil,” Sheriff Chris Nocco told local reporters during a press conference on Friday.

“It was almost, for him, pleasurable,” Nocco also said. “It seemed like he got pleasure from that.”

The Pasco County sheriff said he believes other witnesses are out there. One witness who saw part of the incident unfold told authorities they observed what appeared to be other motorists pulling up, taking photos, and speeding off in the moments following the deadly collision, according to Nocco.

“If you see something horrific like this … don’t stop and drive off — stop and help,” Nocco urged.

“We have a very solid case. We have a very strong case. But, at the same time, we have to bring as much justice as we can for this victim, so please, if you were out there, you saw something, we just want to talk to you.”

Officials said the fatally struck 75-year-old pedestrian was a military veteran. The unidentified man’s family described him as a “beloved father, grandfather, and Vietnam veteran,” in a statement sent to Oxygen.com by a spokesperson for the Pasco County Sheriff’s Office.

Justyn Pennell made his first appearance in Pasco County court on Jan. 10. He’s requested a public defender. No court date has been set for his next appearance, court clerks said on Monday. He’s being held without bond. The 21-year-old doesn’t appear to have a criminal history, court records show.

Mark Gribbin Guilty Of Leo Beauregard Murder

mark gribbin

Mark Gribbin has been convicted of the 1990 murder of  Leo Beauregard in Florida. According to court documents Mark Gribbin would fatally stab to death  Leo Beauregard inside of his apartment. When police were searching the apartment no valuables appeared to be missing and the only piece of evidence was an empty beer can. Nearly thirty years later that single beer can would be linked to Mark Gribbin who would be arrested and later convicted of the murder. Mark Gribbin had previously spent time in prison in both Michigan and Ohio.

Mark Gribbin More News

It took North Palm Beach police 30 years to make an arrest in the fatal stabbing of Leo Beauregard. It took a jury about three hours Tuesday to return a guilty verdict against the man they arrested.

A jury convicted Mark Steven Gribbin on a charge of first-degree murder. Investigators linked him to the 1990 homicide through DNA evidence that defense attorneys called into question because police allowed a psychic to handle it during their investigation.

Police say Beauregard died June 29, 1990, at his apartment on Paradise Harbor Boulevard, off U.S. 1 near Northlake Boulevard. The 68-year-old man died from a 7-inch stab wound to his neck

Mark Gribbin, 58, sat silently as the verdict was read and later hugged his attorneys before being fingerprinted and led away by Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office deputies. Circuit Judge Daliah Weiss immediately sentenced him to life in prison

“Justice sometimes takes a long time. In this case, it took nearly 32 years,” the Palm Beach County State Attorney’s Office said in a prepared statement Tuesday. “But it is justice for the victim.”

The state’s case focused largely on a spotless, empty Busch beer can found on a table covered with blood splatter.

North Palm Beach police investigators reopened the case in 2018 after the agency had created a cold-case squad. In 2019, PBSO reported that DNA taken from the mouth of the can was a probable match to Mark Gribbin.

“The killer had that beer, and the killer is sitting right there,” Assistant State Attorney Aleathea McRoberts told jurors during closing arguments.

Prosecutors told jurors that the two men knew each other, noting items found in Beauregard’s home after the murder included a calendar that had Gribbin’s birthday on it and a handwritten note that had prison and inmate information from a Michigan prison where Gribbin had previously served time.

Public records show that Mark Gribbin spent time in prison in Michigan and Ohio following convictions for burglary and robbery.

According to police records, Gribbin had been incarcerated in Michigan in early 1990. After being released, he had his parole transferred to West Palm Beach in June of that year and lived with his mother for about two months, about 5 miles from Beauregard’s home.

While speaking to North Palm Beach investigators at his home in Ohio in early 2020, Gribbin said he spent time in West Palm Beach in the late 1980s but denied knowing Beauregard or having ever been in his home

The Palm Beach County Public Defender’s Office, which represented Gribbin, argued that North Palm Beach police investigators in 1990 lacked sufficient knowledge about DNA to process the scene properly.

Assistant Public Defender Courtney Wilson also told jurors that the village’s police department failed to maintain evidence records properly. She pointed to the department’s decision in 1992 to send the beer can and a blood-stained towel recovered recovered from scene to a psychic

At trial, the Public Defender’s Office showed jurors a video recording of psychic Noreen Reiner handling the items without gloves. Wilson said there was no record how the items were returned to North Palm Beach, or where they were kept prior to the beer can being examined for DNA in 2010.

“This is the last time we see or know where that beer can is for the next 18 years,” Wilson said during closing arguments. “They have the burden of showing you where it has been every step of the way, and they simply can’t do it.”

Wilson also noted that DNA recovered from the towel remains unidentified.

“That belongs to the actual killer,” she said. “The police don’t always get it right, and in this case they didn’t. They have not presented evidence, proof, that Mr. Gribbin killed Mr. Beauregard, and they cannot provide evidence.

In his rebuttal argument, Assistant State Attorney Reid Scott addressed concerns about Reiner’s handling of evidence, noting that her DNA was not found on the items.

He described the beer can as a “12-ounce problem” for the defense, noting the lack of blood on the can despite the presence of blood spatter on the table.

“His DNA is on the the mouth (of the can) because he drank from it,” Scott said.

A Portland woman was charged Wednesday with murder in the death of her 5-year-old son.

In an affidavit, authorities said 27-year-old Chelsea Lanett Crossland beat, spanked and choked her son, Christian, and at times punished the boy by not allowing him to eat “for days at a time.”

The child died in his family’s home, in the 600 block of South Western Avenue, on March 24.

An autopsy, conducted Friday in Fort Wayne, indicated he died as a result as a result of “complications from blunt force trauma to (his head and mouth).

When he died, investigators determined, Christian was “severely malnourished” and dehydrated.

He had “numerous bruises and contusions on his body, and had abrasions and injuries to his face,” the affidavit said. When Portland police were called to the Western Avenue home on the night of March 24, they found the boy was clad only in a diaper.

The house was described as “unkempt and filthy.”

Indiana State Police led the investigation into the child’s death.

Court documents filed by Jay County Prosecutor Wes Schemenaur’s office indicated another child had described the abuse the boy had suffered, and also reported Chelsea Crossland had discussed disposing of her son’s body.

The boy’s father also reportedly said Crossland had told him “she wished Christian was dead.”

Crossland — who was arrested Monday — was also formally charged on Wednesday with neglect of dependent resulting in death and child molesting, both Level 1 felonies carrying up to 40 years in prison.

The molesting charge alleges the Portland woman sexually abused a child other than Christian.

In Indiana, a murder conviction carries a maximum 65-year prison term.

Crossland is being held without bond in the Jay County jail.
