A Detroit couple has been charged with murder, child abuse, and torture in the death of their 5-year-old son and abuse of their 3-year-old son, prosecutors said.

Officers were called at 1:07 p.m. Sunday (Jan. 22) to a home in the 14600 block of Spring Garden Street, which is in the area of 7 Mile Road and Chalmers Street on Detroit’s east side.

When they arrived, police saw 5-year-old Ethan Belcher being taken to an EMS truck. He was brought to a nearby hospital and pronounced dead.

A 3-year-old boy was found at another location with bruises on his head and face, according to authorities. Medical officials took him to the hospital for treatment.

Ethan’s aunt, Ashley Belcher, told Local 4 she reported the abuse to authorities last year. She said she took photos of his bruises and cuts and gave them to investigators. She said Lincoln Park police and Child Protective Services opened an investigation, but ultimately the kids ended up back in the parents’ care.

“We could have saved his life,” said Ashley Belcher. “Had they just listened. It wasn’t just me. It was other people who reported it, and they got sent to take some classes, and they got these children back, and it was a house of terror.”

Belcher said Ethan’s body was found with bruises and burns.

“He has over 100 cigarette burns on his body, he had frostbitten feet, and he was missing a toe that never was taken care of,” Belcher said.

Shane Robert Shelton, 27, and Valeria Lynn Hamilton, 27, both of Detroit, are accused of physically abusing both boys. Hamilton is Ethan’s biological mother, and Shelton is his stepfather, officials said.

“The alleged facts in this case are extremely alarming,” Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy said. “The evidence will come out in court.”

Shelton and Hamilton are both charged with felony murder, torture, conspiracy to commit torture, and two counts of first-degree child abuse.

They were arraigned Wednesday at 36th District Court and remanded to the Wayne County Jail. A probable cause conference is scheduled for 8:30 a.m. Feb. 1, and a preliminary examination is scheduled for 1:45 p.m. Feb. 8.

Alexander Jackson Guilty Of Murdering His Family

Alexander Jackson

Alexander Jackson is a man from Iowa who was just found guilty of the murders of his parents and sister. According to court records Alexander Jackson would murder his father Jan Perry Jackson, mother Melissa Ferne Jackson, and sister Sabrina Hana Jackson would then shoot himself in the foot. When police arrived Alexander Jackson would tell officers that a black man had broken into the home and killed his family and shot him. However soon Alexander Jackson story would fall apart and he would be arrested and charged with the triple murder. Alexander Jackson would be found guilty at trial of all charges.

Alexander Jackson More News

After six hours of deliberations, a Linn County jury has found a Cedar Rapids man guilty of killing his parents and sister at their northeast side home in June 2021.

Alex Jackson, 22, was found guilty of three counts of first-degree murder on Wednesday morning. He’ll receive a mandatory sentence of life in prison on March 3.

Melissa, Jan, and Sabrina Jackson were found dead in the family’s Oak Leaf Court NE home the morning of June 15, 2021. Alex Jackson had called 911 himself, claiming that an intruder had broken in and shot him and his father. The two women were found dead once police arrived at the home.

Danielle Jackson-Parsons, Alex’s cousin and Jan’s niece, read a statement to media members after Wednesday’s verdict

“Alex wanted the world to think he was a victim of this horrendous crime,” Jackson-Parsons said. “But we know that is not the case, and now, everyone knows the truth of what happened that day. Alex murdered three members of our family – and that pain will never go away.”

“Being able to give (the Jackson family) a moment of peace and closure after a year and a half of tragedy and hurt – I don’t think that makes this verdict any easier on them – knowing that a family member killed and murdered their other family members,” assistant Linn County attorney Monica Slaughter said, “but at least now, the healing process can begin.”

Defense attorney Tyler Johnston tells Iowa’s News Now he is planning to appeal Wednesday’s ruling – maintaining Jackson’s innocence.

“It’s very disappointing,” he said. “Alex is 22 years of age and is going to spend the rest of his life in prison for a crime that he didn’t commit.”

Jackson said he’d been shot in the foot while fighting the alleged intruder over a Browning .22 rifle found in the home. Investigators say that gun, which belonged to the Jacksons, is the murder weapon – and that two clear palm prints found on it are Alex Jackson’s. The box to the gun was also found under Jackson’s bed.

Jackson’s defense argued that investigators were sloppy in their search for the alleged intruder and ignored potential evidence that could have proven another person’s presence at the home. The defense also said two investigators that interviewed Jackson at UnityPoint St. Luke’s that morning took advantage of a shocked and medicated Jackson as they began to blame him for the murders.

The jury deliberated for four hours on Tuesday before resuming discussions at 8:30 a.m. Wednesday. News of a verdict being reached came around 10:10 a.m.

Henry Tenon Charged In Jared Bridegan Murder

Henry Tenon

Henry Tenon is a man from Florida who was just charged in the murder of Jared Bridegan. According to police reports Henry Tenon allegedly murdered Jared Bridegan as he stood outside of his vehicle with his daughter in the backseat. The Jared Bridegan murder which has gone unsolved for a year had been focused on Shanna Gardener-Fernandez and her second husband Mario Fernandez who remain suspects in the Bridegan murder as the Jacksonville Florida police stated that convicted felon Henry Tenon did not act alone however they did not name another suspects or pending arrests in their press conference. Henry Tenon has been charged with second degree murder and child abuse

Henry Tenon More News

Nearly a year after a father of four was gunned down in what police believe was a targeted ambush shooting in Jacksonville Beach, police and the state attorney’s office announced an arrest in the case Wednesday.

Henry Tenon, 61, has been charged with conspiracy to commit murder, second-degree murder with a weapon, accessory after the fact to a capital felony and felony child abuse — all directly related to the murder of Bridegan, Jacksonville Beach Police Department Chief Gene Paul Smith said during a Wednesday news conference.

State Attorney Melissa Nelson said the child abuse charge stems from the fact Bridegan’s 2½-year-old daughter was in the backseat of his sport utility vehicle “directly in harm’s way when her father was shot and killed in front of her.” The child was not injured.

We know Henry Tenon did not act alone,” she said.

The I-TEAM has uncovered records confirming that Tenon lived in a home owned by Mario Fernandez, who was the second husband of Bridegan’s ex-wife.

The Microsoft manager had just left the home of his ex-wife, Shanna Gardner-Fernandez, the night of the ambush on Feb. 16. He dropped off the twins he shared with her, and then the attack occurred just miles away as he headed to his home in St. Johns County.

According to detectives, Bridegan, 33, was shot at close range several times after he stopped to move a tire out of the road on a dark stretch near the Sanctuary neighborhood. That tire, investigators believe, was part of the setup.

This was a planned and targeted ambush and murder,” Smith said during Wednesday’s news conference.

There’s been a lot of public interest in Gardner-Fernandez and her second husband. She has proclaimed her innocence in interviews with other outlets.

According to sources, Gardner-Fernandez moved with her children across the country to Benton County, Washington, where her family has a home.

A report from Fox News states she was spotted there Monday—hours before News4JAX reported on the major development. She had no comment.

All the while, investigators have been asking for information about a dark blue older 2004 to 2008 Ford F-150 pickup truck, which they believe was involved in the murder.

Smith thanked all those who stepped up with tips in the case about both the truck and the tire that was left in the road, and asked anyone with information about Tenon to come forward.

Tenon has been in jail since August. He was arrested after a traffic stop on Edgewood Avenue North. The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office found a shotgun and a small baggie of marijuana in the car. He was initially charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and misdemeanor possession of marijuana, but those charges were later dropped. He pleaded guilty to felony driving with a suspended license and is awaiting sentencing. His bond was revoked Jan. 10, and his next court hearing is Jan. 31.

Court records show a history of other arrests for domestic battery (to which he pleaded no contest) and a hit-and-run crash.

Nelson said they have obtained a court order sealing Tenon’s arrest warrant and affidavit on the Bridegan charges for 30 days because of the ongoing investigation.

And her office will be seeking a first-degree murder indictment against Tenon from a grand jury. That would carry a mandatory sentence of life in prison.

Nelson said the conspiracy charge could carry a sentence up to 30 years, the accessory charge could carry up to 30 years, the child abuse charge could carry up to five years and the second-degree murder charge could carry up to life in prison.

News4JAX reported Tuesday night that an arrest was imminent after the I-TEAM received information from three different law enforcement sources.

Bridegan’s wife, Kirsten, has been vocal to the I-TEAM about her family’s pain, begging for someone to come forward with answers to help police solve the case.

“I rack my brain. I stay up all night long thinking, ‘Why? Was there any hint this was coming?’ There was none,” Kirsten Bridegan said in March.

She was standing side by side with investigators at Wednesday’s news conference but did not comment.

Police have said many times solving the case is a top priority.

“Due to hundreds of tips that we received from citizens coming in, the detectives have to follow up on each and every tip that comes in,” JBPD Sgt. Tonya Tator said in August.

Memories of Jared Bridegan with his children motivate his family in their search for justice.

“I know that if he was here and I wasn’t, he would be fighting for me — also the kids,” Kirsten Bridegan said in August. “I want all four of the kids to know why they don’t have their dad because he was the best dad.

There is a $55,000 reward for information leading to an arrest and prosecution in the killing. First Coast Crime Stoppers is offering a $50,000 reward for information leading to an arrest. Much of that money was raised privately by the Bridegan family. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, or ATF, is offering an additional $5,000 for information leading to an arrest and conviction.
