A man who was 15 when he was accused of murder has been found guilty and now faces 20 years to life in prison.
Edwin Paniagua, now 19, was found guilty of heinous murder with wanton cruelty in the 2010 death of Jean Wattecamps of Mount Prospect. The jury reached the decision late Tuesday after deliberating for about an hour.
Paniagua and another man, Marko Guardiola, hatched a plan to rob Wattecamps, whom they had just met earlier the same day and believe had money or valuables in his apartment, authorities said.
But after tying up Wattecamps and not finding any money or valuables in his apartment, the men became irate and beat Wattecamps, and then Guardiola stabbed him multiple times. Guardiola pleaded guilty earlier this year and was sentenced to 33 years in prison
In closing arguments, Cook County prosecutors described Edwin Paniagua as a willing participant in the robbery and death of Wattecamps, 52.
Paniagua’s attorneys portrayed him as an innocent and unwitting part of a plan hatched by Guardiola, now 41.
Guardiola’s girlfriend, Erica Yanez, also was at the crime scene and became a key witness against Paniagua. She was not charged in the case.
Assistant State’s Attorney Karen Crothers told the jury that Edwin Paniagua described his participation in the crime in a videotaped statement to police and never once mentioned that he feared Guardiola or that Guardiola threatened him.
“He was cold as ice when he described how he and his buddy ended Jean’s life,” Crothers said. “He was in it up to his eyeballs.”
Jurors listened to nearly three hours of closing arguments in the case, but were not allowed to see a letter written by Paniagua while he was in Cook County Jail awaiting trial that allegedly sought help from members of a street gang to kill Guardiola and Yanez.
Wattecamps met Guardiola and Yanez when the two were hanging out at the apartment complex he lived in. He befriended them, bought them dinner and beer and apparently was swayed by what attorneys called Guardiola’s charming manner. Wattecamps was an airline baggage supervisor at O’Hare Airport.
“He was generous. He was vulnerable. He was not a real social person, but they (Guardiola and Yanez) accepted him,” said Wattecamps’ sister, Marie Schutt.
Schutt said she was pleased with the verdict but called it “a sad for all of because there’s another mom who’s hurting.”

A man already serving a 26-year sentence in a 2010 murder pled guilty and was sentenced to 20 years more in prison Wednesday in a murder-for-hire plot against a witness in the 2010 case, authorities said.
Edwin Paniagua, 20, is serving time in the 2010 death of Jean Wattecamps, of Mount Prospect. Paniagua and another man, Marko Guardiola, hatched a plan to rob Wattecamps, whom they had met earlier the same day and believed had money or valuables in his apartment, authorities said at the time of his trial.
But after tying up Wattecamps and not finding any money or valuables in his apartment, Edwin Paniagua became irate and beat Wattecamps and kicked him in the chest, and Guardiola then stabbed him multiple times.
After he pled guilty Wednesday to solicitation of murder, Paniagua was sentenced by Rolling Meadows Branch Court Judge Bridget Jane Hughes to serve this latest sentence after his murder sentenced is finished, according to court records and Cook County state’s attorney’s spokeswoman Tandra Simonton.
While incarcerated on Dec. 17, 2011, Edwin Paniagua offered an undercover officer $2,000 to have a witness on his current case killed, according to a police report. The conversation was recorded.
Before Paniagua’s trial, attorneys argued over whether jurors could see a letter written by Paniagua while he was in Cook County Jail awaiting trial that allegedly sought help from members of a street gang to kill his girlfriend — a witness in the case against him — and Guardiola. It was not allowed into evidence in the trial, but he was convicted of the murder and sentenced to prison last year.
