A Murphy woman has been charged with first degree murder in the death of her twin 4-year-old sons, Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office said late Sunday night, March 3.
Genevieve Ellen Springer, 44, was taken into custody Sunday, March 3, by the sheriff’s office at around 3:46 p.m. She was not given the option for bond.
According to officials, the sheriff’s office and Cherokee County Emergency Services responded to a 911 call at 75 Gooseberry Road in Murphy on Saturday, March 2. The caller was a Cherokee County father who arrived at the home of his separated wife to exercise custody of his 4-year-old twin sons around 10 a.m. that day.
Upon arrival to the home, he found his twin sons deceased, officials said
An investigation was launched by detectives with the sheriff’s office, agents with the N.C. State Bureau of Investigation and assistant district attorneys from the office of District Attorney Ashley Welch.
Officials said Springer, who has been named as the mother of the deceased twin boys, was hospitalized in North Georgia and charged with two counts of first degree murder by the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office. Springer was released from the hospital on March 2 and subsequently arrested in Union County, Georgia. She waived extradition and was transported to the Cherokee County Detention Center on March 3, where she is currently held without bond.
The date of Springer’s offenses was listed as Monday, Feb. 26, but the date and time of death is still being determined. Officials said the twins’ father said he last saw his sons alive on Feb. 26. Currently, the date of Springer’s offense on the warrants is listed as a range of Feb. 26 to March 2. The sheriff’s office said it is hopeful autopsies will narrow down the date and time of the twins’ passing.
Springer’s court date is listed at Thursday, March 7.
On Saturday, March 2, Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office made a post on Facebook that it was investigating a homicide in the Harshaw community of Murphy and that there was no danger to the local community.
