Albuquerque police have arrested a 14-year-old West Mesa High School student and charged him with murder in the shooting death of another student at the school on Friday.

Marcos Trejo was arrested Friday evening at a West Side home. He was charged with an open count of murder and evidence tampering and booked into the Bernalillo County Juvenile Detention Center, Albuquerque Police Department spokesman Gilbert Gallegos said in a news release.

Detectives investigating the shooting learned that the boy who was killed, 16-year-old Andrew Burson, had accused Trejo of stealing a gun he had purchased over the internet

Gallegos said Burson confronted Trejo just east of West Mesa High, and an altercation ensued.

“Burson started to run after Trejo when Trejo produced a handgun and fired 5-6 rounds at Burson,” Gallegos said in the release. “Burson was struck several times by gunfire.” The boy died at the scene.

A STUDENT was fatally shot outside a high school in New Mexico as the gunman remains on the loose.

The shooting unfolded on Friday morning near West Mesa High School in Albuquerque.

Police Chief Harold Medina said a student was exiting the school and got into a fight with another juvenile, and the shooting happened shortly afterward.

The student, whose age and name remain unknown, died from their injuries.

The shooter has been identified, Medina said in a press conference; however, they have not been detained.

The police chief assured residents in the area that there was no threat to the public.

Investigators believe the shooter was a juvenile, but it is unknown if that person was a student at West Mesa High School.

Albuquerque Public Schools Superintendent Scott Elder told KOAT the firearm never made it on campus.

Elder said while the shooting was not on campus, it was far too close.

“It’s deeply disturbing. It’s very hard for our schools … We really need to work together to make sure this doesn’t happen,” Elder told the outlet.

Albuquerque Mayor Tim Keller advised adults to speak up if they think a student is in possession of a gun.

“If you think another student has a gun, please say something. This is a related conversation that’s been happening all across America, and now we’re seeing it in Albuquerque.

“That nightmare is real for every single parent who is in line to pick up their child. One parent got the worst call of all,” Keller added.

Officials asked families to pick up students directly from the school.

Video from the scene showed a crowd of parents on the campus grounds picking up their children.
