The oldest prisoner on death row in Texas was executed tonight.

“Much has been said about this case,” he said while strapped to the death chamber gurney. “Much has been written about this case. Not all if it has been the truth. But the time for discerning truth is over and it’s time to move on.”

The Associated Press reported Bower snored quietly half a dozen times after receiving the injection and then stopped moving. He was pronounced dead 18 minutes later.

Lester Bower, 67, has maintained his innocence, saying the men were alive when he left after buying an airplane. Prosecutors said he wanted to buy the airplane from one of the men, but in an attempt to hide the purchase from his wife, he went to the hangar and stole it.

Bower initially lied to his wife and investigators. He later admitted that he had been to the ranch where the four victims — Bob Tate, Philip Good, Jerry Brown and Ronald Mayes — were found. Good was a sheriff’s deputy and Mayes was a former police officer.

Parts of the plane were later found in his home and he was unable to produce a receipt for the airplane.

Lester Bower is the eighth inmate in Texas to be executed this year.

A Texas man who killed his 15-year-old ex-girlfriend, her mother and her grandfather was executed Tuesday evening, after the U.S. Supreme Court declined to rule that he was mentally incompetent.

Derrick Charles was the seventh person put to death in Texas this year, at a time when lethal injections are on hold in several states around the nation.

His last statement was, “I’m ready to go home,” and Charles was pronounced dead at 6:36 p.m. CT, according to officials with the Texas Department of Criminal Justice.

Charles, 32, confessed and pleaded guilty to the 2002 triple slaying, telling police how he struggled to strangle teenager Myeshia Bennett and told her, “I guess you don’t want to die” — then bashed her in the face with a stereo speaker and dropped a TV on her head. He also admitted sexually abusing Bennett’s mother as she was dying.

In petitions filed with the U.S. Supreme Court, Charles’ lawyers argued that he suffered from mental illness that dates to childhood and should have been exempt from execution. They said that Texas courts did not provide him with an attorney or other services that would have helped him raise an incompetency claim.

In response, Texas said there was no evidence that Charles suffered from severe mental illness or that he did not understand why he was being executed.

Manuel Garza More News

A San Antonio man who fatally shot a SWAT team member with the officer’s own gun more than 14 years ago was executed Wednesday, the sixth convicted murderer put to death in Texas so far this year.

Manuel Garza Jr. received a lethal injection of pentobarbital for killing San Antonio Police Officer John “Rocky” Riojas in February 2001. The U.S. Supreme Court had refused in November to review his case, and no last-day appeals were filed before his execution.

Asked to make a final statement, Manuel Garza said he was sorry for causing pain to his family, friends and “especially police officers.”

“Y’all probably hate me,” he said, looking at three friends of his victim, dressed in their navy blue San Antonio police uniforms. He wished them “peace and love and hope y’all find God like I have and I’ll see you on the other side.”

As the lethal drug began taking effect, Garza uttered: “Here it comes!” His voice rose as he said “Good bye,” and then he let out a howl that was cut short within seconds as he took three deep breaths, then a couple shallow ones. He was pronounced dead 26 minutes later at 6:40 p.m. CDT

Manuel Garza, 35, already had a long criminal record at age 20 when he was stopped by Riojas, who was part of a team targeting property crimes at apartment complexes. Garza ran off and witnesses say that when Riojas caught up with him, the two struggled and Garza grabbed the officer’s gun.

Riojas, 37, was fatally shot in the head. Witnesses said Garza put Riojas’ gun in his pants, cursed at the fallen officer, and ran away. Garza was apprehended a day later at his sister’s apartment after an informant told detectives that someone had tried to sell him the officer’s missing semi-automatic service weapon.

In a statement to detectives, Garza blamed Riojas. “I truly think this was the cop’s fault,” he said. “I don’t see why he wanted to pull out his gun.” Garza said he initially ran because he feared the officer would discover he was wanted on outstanding warrants.

Andre Cole More News

Missouri has carried out its third execution of the year.

Andre Cole died by lethal injection at the Eastern Reception, Diagnostic and Correctional Center in Bonne Terre. The execution began at 10:15 p.m., and he was pronounced dead at 10:24 p.m

Pentobarbital was again the drug used for the procedure, according to Department of Corrections spokesman Mike O’Connell. He says there were no complications during the execution, and that Cole chose not to use any pain-relieving drugs beforehand.

Cole was convicted of the 1998 stabbing death of Anthony Curtis, who was visiting Cole’s ex-wife, Terri, at the time of the killing. According to court documents, Cole was behind on child support payments and a payroll withholding order had been sent to his employer. Upon learning the news, Cole was quoted as telling his co-workers, “Before I give her another dime I’ll kill the bitch.”

On Aug. 21, 1998, Cole became enraged after the first payroll deduction appeared on his check stub. He went to his ex-wife’s house, got inside after throwing a tire iron through a glass doorway and was confronted by Curtis. Cole then stabbed him several times and also stabbed Terri repeatedly. Curtis died, while Terri survived.

Andre Cole fled Missouri after the attack, but returned 33 days later and turned himself in to police in St. Louis. DNA evidence confirmed the presence of Cole’s blood at the scene, along with the blood from Curtis and Terri on the murder weapon.

Andre Cole did not provide a final statement, but according to the Associated Press he nodded at relatives who blew kisses to him just before he was executed. He also turned down the traditional last meal and instead received Tuesday’s regular tray meal of a turkey and bologna sandwich, a cookie and fruit punch.

Meanwhile, a group of activists, including several African-American leaders and the members of the ACLU, had asked Nixon to postpone the execution and appoint a panel to study the exclusion of black jurors from death penalty cases.  Cole, who was black, was convicted by an all-white jury

Kent Sprouse Texas Execution

Kent Sprouse was executed by the State of Texas for two murders including the death of a police officer. According to court documents Kent Sprouse would shoot and kill the first victim, Pedro Moreno, in the parking lot of a gas station. When police arrived to investigate Kent Sprouse would open fire killing Harry Marvin “Marty” Steinfeldt III. Kent Sprouse would be arrested, convicted and sentenced to death. Kent Sprouse would be executed on April 9, 2015

Kent Sprouse More News

Texas prison officials on Thursday executed a man convicted in the slaying of a Dallas-area police officer during a 2002 shootout that followed the killing of a customer outside a convenience store.

Kent Sprouse, 42, became the fifth convicted killer put to death this year in Texas, the nation’s most active death penalty state.

Before his execution, Sprouse apologized to the families of his victims and his own family “for all the trouble I’ve caused everyone.” Then he thanked his family for their support.

“I guess that’s it,” he said.

As the lethal drug began taking effect, he said he could “smell it,” then added the drug “started to hit me with that $10,000.”

He took several deep breaths, then began snoring. Within a minute, all movement stopped. He was pronounced dead 22 minutes later at 6:33 p.m. CDT.

The U.S. Supreme Court refused to review Sprouse’s case in November, and no last-day appeals were filed for him in the courts.

Sprouse was sentenced to death for the October 2002 killing of 28-year-old Harry Marvin “Marty” Steinfeldt III, a police officer in Ferris, about 20 miles south of Dallas.

Witnesses said Sprouse carried a shotgun into the Ferris Food Mart store while he made a purchase and then walked outside and fired toward two men at a pay phone. He went to his car and appeared to have some trouble with it, then shot and killed 38-year-old Pedro Moreno, a customer who was pumping gas near him.

Steinfeldt responded to a 911 call about a customer shot at the store and came under gunfire. He was struck twice under the arm where his protective vest did not cover him. He managed to fire 17 shots, reloading his gun once, and wounded Sprouse in the chest, leg and hand.

Court records indicate Sprouse told an officer who accompanied him in an ambulance to a hospital that he believed Moreno was an undercover officer, so he shot him.

“And I shot the other officer that was in uniform,” Sprouse said, according to the records.

Sprouse was charged in Moreno’s killing, but wasn’t tried for it.

Relatives of both Steinfeldt and Moreno declined to speak with reporters after Sprouse’s execution. Michelle Steinfeldt released a statement saying the execution was “the emotional end of a long, excruciating journey.”

Tests showed that Sprouse, a Boone County, Missouri, native, had taken methamphetamine and other illegal drugs within 48 hours of the killings.

Jim Jenkins, who was Sprouse’s lead lawyer at his trial in Steinfeldt’s death, said Sprouse suffered from the effects of methamphetamine addiction.

“It’s very addictive and easy to get and sort of melts your brain after a while,” Jenkins said last week, recalling the case.

“He just didn’t know what he was doing, but the jury has to buy that. It’s sort of like being drunk and killing somebody. That’s really not a defense, not a legal defense. … The whole thing is extremely sad.”

Texas Department of Criminal Justice officials said a recent purchase of pentobarbital means they have enough of the sedative to carry out three other executions set for this month, including one next week. But at least three more are set for May and June, meaning they would have to find a new supply or switch to a different drug to carry out those executions on schedule.

Death penalty states have found it increasingly difficult to acquire execution drugs because traditional manufacturers now refuse to sell their drugs for use in executions. States now rely on compounding pharmacies for their made-to-order execution drugs.
