A mother is facing charges after her toddler drowned last year near Lansing.

Claire Elizabeth Powers, 33, was charged with second-degree murder this week after an investigation stemming from the March 29, 2022, incident. Police have released few details about the circumstances that led to murder charges. 

The Meridian Township Police Department said officers were called to Lake Lansing around 9 a.m. that day because two people, Powers and a 4-year-old boy, were in the water after their kayak overturned. Meridian Township Fire Department personnel removed them from the water and discovered that the boy was not breathing.

First responders tried to save him and transported him to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead

The murder charge was issued last week, and Powers was arrested without incident Wednesday. She is being held at the Ingham County Jail on a $75,000 bond.

A woman has been charged in connection with the drowning death of her 4-year-old son in March of last year on Lake Lansing.

Claire Elizabeth Powers, 34, was arrested Wednesday and arraigned in 55th District Court on a charge of second-degree murder, according to police and court records. A magistrate set a $75,000 bond for her.

The murder charge stems from a March 29, 2022 incident in which a kayak overturned on the lake.

The boy was unresponsive at the scene and was pronounced dead at a hospital, police said. The woman remained hospitalized for a time, although her condition was unclear.

First responders were called to Lake Lansing Park South around 9 a.m. and found two people in the water. Firefighters in cold-water rescue gear pulled them from the icy water.

At the time, police said the incident appeared to be an accident but remained under investigation. Nobody saw the mother and son until they were already in the water, police said.

Meridian Township police announced the arrest in a news release late Wednesday afternoon. No other details about the investigation were released.
