A judge has sentenced Markeith Loyd to death for the murder of Orlando Police Lt. Debra Clayton.
The jury recommended death, but the judge made her final decision Thursday morning.
In November, Loyd was found guilty of murder in the death of Clayton, along with aggravated assault and carjacking.
During his trial, Loyd told the judge he never meant to kill Clayton at the Walmart on Princeton Avenue in January 2017. He said she panicked and fired her gun at him.
Loyd was already facing life in prison in the death of his pregnant ex-girlfriend Sade Dixon.
After the decision, Sheriff John Mina and the Orlando Police Department released statements.
Mina said he was pleased with the decision, adding: “He has caused so much suffering to the families of Lt. Debra Clayton, Sade Dixon, and DFC Norm Lewis.”
The Orlando Police Department said in part: “Although nothing can undo the heartache created by the defendant’s heinous actions, we hope that this brings solace to our community, knowing a dangerous murder will face the highest penalty provided by law.”
“Though this decision may bring a sense of closure, we will never forget Debra’s sacrifice to Orlando Police Department and the City of Orlando.”
Earlier in the week, Loyd was involved in an incident involving corrections officers at the Orange County jail last week, officials say.
County officials say the involved officers sought medical attention and are recovering.
A disciplinary report was generated and the incident is under review. No other details were immediately released.
A judge ruled last week that Loyd is competent to proceed with sentencing for the 2017 murder of Clayton.
