Febrio De-Zoysa is an accused killer from Canada who has been charged with the murders of six people including four children

According to police reports Febrio De-Zoysa was living with the Sri Lanka family in Ottawa Canada. On the day of the murder Febrio De-Zoysa would attack the entire family killing Darshani Dilanthika Ekanayake and her four children Kelly, who was two months old; Rinyana, 2; and Ashwini, 4 — and son Inuka, 7.

Another person living at the home, Gamini Amarakoon, would also be killed in the mass stabbing. The father of the children was injured during the attack

Police are still trying to figure out what set off Febrio De-Zoysa. Apparently the family threw the alleged killer a birthday party just days before the mass stabbing

Febrio De-Zoysa, 19, is now facing six first-degree murder charges and one count of attempted murder.

A family slain in a stabbing rampage at an Ottawa home late Wednesday threw a birthday party for the alleged suspect just days ago, says a religious leader who knew them.

The father who survived the attack in which his wife and four children were killed was in “great shock” on Thursday, said Bhante Suneetha.

The resident monk at Hilda Jayewardenaramaya Buddhist Monastery, which the family attended, said he visited his friend at the hospital.

The father told Suneetha that nothing seemed “wrong” in the lead-up to the attack in which a student living with the family is accused, the monk said.

“They (even) helped him to celebrate,” he told The Canadian Press in an interview. “They organized a celebration of his 19th birthday last week, a few days ago.”

Police were called to the scene of a suburban home in the Barrhaven neighbourhood Wednesday night, where they discovered the bodies of a mother, her four young children and a family friend in the aftermath of a vicious attack.

The dead include Darshani Ekanyake, 35, along with her seven-year-old son, Inuka Wickramasinghe, and her three daughters: Ashwini, 4; two-year-old Rinyana; and Kelly, two-and-a-half months. A family friend, Amarakoonmubiayansela Ge Gemini Amarakoon, was also killed.

The father, identified in court documents as Dhanushka Wickramasinghe, suffered serious but not life-threatening injuries.

Febrio De-Zoysa, a 19-year-old international student who was staying with the family, has been charged with six counts of first-degree murder and one count of attempted murder.

The victims and suspect are all Sri Lankan nationals, according to police. The baby was born in Canada.

The father told Suneetha that there had been no issues between the family and De-Zoysa before the attack.

De-Zoysa had moved into their basement a month or two ago as he pursued his studies in Ottawa. The father had even met the suspect’s parents in Sri Lanka, Suneetha recounted.

But it seemed not all was well with De-Zoysa.

He was having problems at school and recently dropped out, Suneetha said the father told him. He was also having thoughts of suicide.

A spokesperson for Algonquin College confirmed that De-Zoysa had been a student there and his last semester of attendance had been in winter 2023.

The college’s president, Claude Brule, said in a statement that the college is mourning “along with our community after learning the devastating news.”

The resident monk said that as the father tells it, he came home from a cleaning job late Wednesday night when the alleged attack occurred.

The father resisted and asked if his family had been hurt.

“The murderer said, ‘No, I didn’t do anything (to) them.’ And he released him and went to the kids, and they’re gone.”

Suneetha said the father had part of two fingers cut off, and one has been repaired. He also suffered a slash across his face between his nose and his eye and stab wounds to the chest and back.

Ottawa police Chief Eric Stubbs said on Thursday afternoon that police responded to calls that a man – whom he later identified as the father – was yelling for help outside the house.

He was taken to hospital in stable condition, police said.

The monk said he got to know the family because they had been attending his monastery regularly since arriving in Canada after the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Their seven-year-old son had even begun religious classes there just last week.

Suneetha said the family came to Canada with so many “dreams and plans.”

He knew them as kind and helpful people who were enthusiastic participants at community events.

While he didn’t know De-Zoysa, Suneetha said he believes many people have not been faring well since the pandemic, and international students in particular have been suffering.

He said the monestary recently gathered a group of Sri Lankan students to offer spiritual support.

“They are in a great stress and anxiety and (they are) homesick when they come,” he said. “We have to address that.”

Suneetha said he’s been getting calls from members of his community from across the country, expressing their shock and sadness.

“This is the first time that we (had) this kind of incident in our community,” he said.

Police said Thursday they were working to understand what motivated the killings.

“We know there are a lot of questions about why this tragedy occurred. This is the focus of our homicide unit as they diligently investigate this tragic crime,” Stubbs said.

“I want to emphasize this was a senseless act of violence perpetrated on purely innocent people. I know our whole community is shocked in mourning this event.”

De-Zoysa appeared in court briefly on Thursday and was ordered not to speak with the surviving father and a handful of other witnesses. The matter was adjourned until next week so he can get a lawyer.

If you or someone you know is thinking about suicide, support is available 24/7 by calling or texting 988, Canada’s national suicide prevention helpline.

Febrio De-Zoysa Other News

Barrhaven residents and members of Ottawa’s Sri Lankan community say they are struggling to process the horrific mass killing of four young children, their mother and a family acquaintance.

Their bodies were found in their home in Barrhaven, about 15 kilometres south of Ottawa’s downtown core, on Wednesday night.

Only the children’s father survived. He was injured in the attack with an edged weapon and was taken to hospital.

“We are all shocked, no doubt about that,” said Bhante Suneetha, who met the family at a local Buddhist monastery, and described them as sweet and kind.

“In my life, I haven’t heard of such a tragic moment in our community.”

Into the night, dozens of residents moved by what happened streamed silently into a dark tree-lined park two blocks away from the townhouse.

They lit candles and dropped off flowers and stuffed animals at a makeshift memorial.

On Thursday, police said the family were newcomers to Canada from Sri Lanka.

Dhanushka Wickramasinghe is the injured father.

His wife, 35-year-old Darshani Dilanthika Ekanayake, was killed along with the couple’s four young children — daughters Kelly, who was two months old; Rinyana, 2; and Ashwini, 4 — and son Inuka, 7.
Accused was living with family

The body of another man, 40-year-old Gamini Amarakoon, was also found at the scene. Both he and the accused were living with the family, police said.

Febrio De-Zoysa, 19, is now facing six first-degree murder charges and one count of attempted murder.

He was arrested at the home.

Nixsala Antony, who attended the informal memorial at the park near the crime scene, is from Sri Lanka but doesn’t know the family. She said she was “startled” when she heard the news and still feels discomfort.

“They probably had a lot of hopes and dreams,” Antony said. “It’s really sad.”
Family described as ‘kind,’ ‘innocent’

Suneetha, a resident monk and director of the Hilda Jayewardenaramaya Buddhist Monastery on Heron Road, said the family came to his temple for events and helped out.

“They are innocent and also very helpful people. It doesn’t matter [who would ask] for help from them.”

He visited the father, Dhanushka, at the hospital on Thursday morning. Part of one of Dhanushka’s fingers was cut off and another finger was repaired with surgery, Suneetha said. He also has cuts on his face, chest and back.

“I cannot say he’s doing well, but he’s a little bit stronger than we thought,” Suneetha said.

“Mentally, he’s in great shock.”

Dhanushka’s family had only been in Canada for about a year, according to Suneetha. Dhanushka arrived first in 2020 after completing his education and getting a work permit.

Last year, Suneetha said, Ekanayake and their three children joined him. She was pregnant.

A representative of Uber confirmed Dhanushka was a driver for them. Suneetha said Dhanushka had also opened a cleaning business.

Hilal Ahmed, an accountant, said he was contacted by Dhanushka last month for bookkeeping services.

Ahmed found Dhanushka to be very polite and accommodating. He called the situation tragic.

De-Zoysa came to Canada from Sri Lanka as an international student, police said.

On Thursday evening, Algonquin College president Claude Brulé confirmed De-Zoysa had been a student there.

The teen’s last semester of attendance was the winter of 2023, Brulé’s statement said.

Ottawa police chief Eric Stubbs said Thursday that an “edged weapon” was used in the homicides.

De-Zoysa made his first court appearance Thursday afternoon.

He’s due back in court on March 14.
Vigil planned for Saturday morning

“Little kids — they didn’t do anything for this,” said Shanti Ramesh, who lives across the street from the townhouse where the killings happened.

“They come into the world to give something back and this happens? It’s horrible.”

Hilda Jayewardenaramaya Buddhist Monastery said it’s raising donations for the victims’ families.

A candlelight vigil is scheduled Saturday at 11 a.m. in Palmadeo Park, the same park where Thursday’s makeshift memorial was set up.

Funerals will be planned at a later date.

“It will take time for us to digest all this,” Ramesh said.

“It will be there forever, actually.”

Sheldon Johnson Charged In Collin Small Murder

A month ago Sheldon Johnson appeared on the Joe Rogan Experience and now he has been charged with the murder of Collin Small in New York City

According to police reports the body of Collin Small was found in a Bronx apartment, he had been shot in the head and dismembered with parts of his body still in the apartment

NYPD would use video surveillance and would see Sheldon Johnson entering and exiting the apartment at the time of the murder

Sheldon Johnson who had previously served twenty five years in prison for attempted murder would appear on the Joe Rogan Experience to talk about his work in an anti violence program. Now he is facing charges of murder, manslaughter and criminal possession of a weapon.

Sheldon Johnson News

A man who became an outspoken advocate for rehabilitation and a youth counselor at the Queens public defenders’ office after his release from prison last year was charged with killing a 44-year-old man inside a Bronx apartment building this week, according to internal police reports and two high-ranking law enforcement officials familiar with the case.

The suspect, Sheldon Johnson, 48, was charged on Thursday with murder and criminal possession of a loaded firearm. Mr. Johnson, who served about 25 years behind bars for attempted murder and other charges, appeared last month on Joe Rogan’s popular podcast, where he discussed his incarceration and his work with at-risk youth.

The Queens Defenders declined to comment on Wednesday.

On Tuesday, the police received a 911 call around 1 a.m. regarding gunshots inside an apartment building in the Highbridge neighborhood of the Bronx, according to the police reports and the law enforcement official.

At least one neighbor told the police they heard two shots from inside a sixth-floor apartment, according to an internal police report. Moments later, the neighbor heard a person shout, “Please don’t, I have a family!”

Then, the neighbor told the police, two more gunshots rang out.

Shortly after hearing the shots, the neighbor saw a man carrying cleaning supplies walk in and out of the apartment. The neighbor did not recognize the man, and told the building superintendent what they had heard and seen. The superintendent called 911 for a wellness check.

When officers arrived at the apartment on Summit Avenue, near the corner of West 162nd Street, they found a man’s torso and a foot inside a plastic storage bin, according to the reports and the official.

Mr. Johnson was seen on surveillance video entering and exiting the building, according to the official and police reports. He was taken into police custody on Tuesday for questioning before his arrest.

Later on Wednesday, the police obtained a warrant to search Mr. Johnson’s apartment in Harlem, according to the law enforcement official. There they discovered the victim’s legs, arms and head in a freezer. The victim had been shot at least once in the head.

Mr. Johnson has spent about half of his life behind bars. In 1997, under the alias Thomas Smalls, he was convicted of criminal possession of stolen property in Manhattan, according to state prison records.

Two years later, Mr. Johnson was convicted of attempted murder, robbery and other charges in Manhattan, according to the records. He served the maximum sentence of about 25 years, and was released last May.

His attempted murder case and long incarceration had prompted public efforts to convince the state to grant him clemency. A fund-raising page on the website newyorkersforclemency.com described him as a “community leader and mentor” as well as a “creative writer and thespian.”

In his own writings and in other media reports, Mr. Johnson described his incarceration as part of a family legacy of crime and punishment. Mr. Johnson’s father also served time in prison, and his son, also named Sheldon Johnson, pleaded guilty to manslaughter in family court in connection with a fatal attack on a Columbia graduate student in 2008, when the younger Mr. Johnson was 12.

On Mr. Rogan’s podcast, Sheldon Johnson described himself as a big shot member of the Bloods who was at “the top of the food chain.” He continued in his leadership role even while behind bars.

In 2005, Mr. Johnson said, he began to rethink the drug dealing, the guns and the gang life. He wanted to leave it all behind.

“My son was growing up hearing stories about my so-called notoriety. I just didn’t want to be that dad,” Mr. Johnson said.

“I said to myself, ‘I’ve been doing bad for so long, I’m going to try to do something good,’” he added. “If all else fails, I could always go back to doing something bad. But let me try. Let me give it a shot.”

Jacob Kubai Murders 4 Month Old Infant

Jacob Kubai is an alleged killer from Florida who has been charged in the beating death of his four month old daughter

According to police reports four month old Willow Kubai was rushed to a Tampa hospital in critical condition and unfortunately the little girl would die from her substantial injuries

Willow Kubai had been savagely beaten by her father Jacob Kubai that left her with fractured skull, multiple layers of hemorrhaging to the brain, broken ribs, bruises and scratches. The little girl survived for two days in the hospital before dying

Jacob Kubai would be arrested and has been charged with aggravated manslaughter of a child, aggravated child abuse and two counts of knowingly abusing a child without bodily harm in the death

Jacob Kubai News

A Florida man is facing multiple charges “for causing the death” of his 4-month-old daughter, according to the Polk County Sheriff’s Office.

Sheriff Grady Judd announced Wednesday that Jacob Kubai, 22, is charged with aggravated manslaughter of a child, aggravated child abuse and two counts of knowingly abusing a child without bodily harm in the death of his daughter, Willow.

His arrest comes after a joint death investigation with the Bartow Police Department that began on Feb. 22 after Willow was brought to the Bartow Regional Medical Center with “no brain activity and suspicious physical injuries,” according to the sheriff’s office.

The infant girl was stabilized and transported by helicopter to Saint Joseph’s Hospital in Tampa, where it was determined that she had a fractured skull, multiple layers of hemorrhaging to the brain, broken ribs, bruises and scratches. She died from her injuries two days later.

Judd said death investigations can “take many months” to complete, but the severe injuries to Willow “left no doubt how she was killed.”

“I don’t know how a father could do this to his child, but I do know he should be locked-up(sic) for as long as the law allows,” the sheriff said in a statement.

During separate interviews with a Polk County detective, neither Kubai or his wife could explain how the baby obtained her injuries.

When recalling his day with Willow before she arrived at the hospital, Kubai allegedly told detectives his daughter was fine while they went to Walmart together between 6:40 p.m. and 7:50 p.m. He said he fed her when they got home and then discovered she wasn’t breathing when he checked on her at around 8:10 p.m.

The sheriff’s office said security footage obtained by detectives showed Kubai alone at a self-checkout register at 6:54 p.m. and when they confronted him with the inconsistency, he “refused to provide any additional information.”

It was determined that Willow was injured while Kubai was her sole caregiver during a three-hour period before she was taken to the hospital. Kubai’s wife was at work at the time and told police that Willow did not have bruising when she left the house.

“The baby was literally beaten to death,” Judd said during a Wednesday news conference. “The only person at home at the time was Jacob.”

The sheriff’s office also said Kubai left the infant alone on at least two different occasions – Jan. 17 and Feb. 22.

An autopsy performed on Willow by the District 10 Medical Examiner’s Office on Feb. 27 revealed “multiple blunt force trauma injuries” to the front of Willow’s head, a swollen and hemorrhaged spine and an acute skull fracture on the back of her head, as well as ten rib fractures in the healing stage.

“Based on the injuries noted, the skull fracture would have been caused by the caregiver at that time. The cause of death was determined to be blunt force trauma of the head. The manner of death was ruled as a homicide,” the autopsy concluded, according to the sheriff’s office.

Elroy Harrison Tied To 2 Cold Case Murders

Elroy Harrison
#image_title

Elroy Harrison is a an alleged killer from Virginia who has been tied to two murders that took place nearly forty years ago

According to police reports Jacqueline Lard was reported missing from a real estate office where she was working in on November 15 1986. Her coworkers would walk into a bloody scene the next day where it became apparent something violent took place. Kids playing in the woods would find her body the next day

In March 1989 Amy Baker would disappear while she was visiting family. The eighteen year old would be reported missing by her family when she failed to return home and the family would find her body the next day

The two murder cases would go cold until investigators were able to reopen the cases and now were able to use all of the advancements in DNA testing that would lead them to the arrest of Elroy Harrison. A Grand Jury would indict Elroy Harrison on first-degree murder, abduction with the intent to defile and aggravated malicious wounding of Lard with more charges pending in the case of Baker

Elroy Harrison News

A Virginia man has been arrested after being connected to two cold case murders through DNA evidence.

The first murder occurred in 1986, authorities said. Jacqueline Lard of Stafford County was last seen on Nov. 15, 1986, as the real estate office where she worked closed for the day. The next morning, Lard’s coworkers found a crime scene at the office that the Stafford Police Department say indicated a “horrific struggle.” Investigators determined that the 32-year-old and her vehicle were both missing. Two juveniles playing in a wooded area found Lard’s body the next day beneath a pile of discarded carpet.

The second murder occurred in March 1989, when Stafford County woman Amy Baker disappeared while visiting family in Falls Church, Virginia, Fairfax County police said. Baker, 18, never returned home from the visit. Her car was found unoccupied that same night, and her family reported her missing. Her family searched the area and found Baker’s body in a wooded area near an exit ramp on I-95.

Forensic evidence from both murders was used to identify Baker and Lard’s alleged killer. In 2021, detectives with the Fairfax County Police Department’s cold case team submitted evidence from Baker’s death to DNA Labs International. A DNA profile was created and uploaded to Virginia’s state database. This allowed those investigating Lard’s death to connect the two killings.

Detectives then used forensic genetic genealogy, with the assistance of Parabon NanoLabs and the Virginia State Police’s Unsolved Violent Crimes and Cold Cases Analytical Support Team, to identify the family name of a possible suspect. Through that, police began to investigate 65-year-old Elroy Harrison, a Stafford County resident

The investigation into Harrison began in February 2024. On March 4, Harrison was indicted by a Stafford County grand jury on multiple charges, including first-degree murder, abduction with the intent to defile and aggravated malicious wounding of Lard. Harrison has not yet been charged in relation with Baker’s murder, Fairfax County officials said, but an investigation is ongoing.

Elroy Harrison was arrested on March 5, and remains in the Rappahannock Regional Jail. He has been denied bond, jail records show.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with Jacqueline’s and Amy’s family and friends and we hope this arrest can bring them some peace,” the Stafford County Sheriff’s Office said.

Elroy Harrison More News

Stafford County, Virginia, investigators arrested a suspect Tuesday in connection to two cold case murders that occurred in 1986 and 1989, after advancements in DNA forensics led to his identification.

The Stafford County Sheriff’s Office announced that 65-year-old Elroy Harrison was indicted on Monday on charges of first-degree murder, abduction with intent to defile and aggravated malicious wounding, in the death of 32-year-old Jacqueline Lard.

In a post on Facebook, the sheriff’s office said Lard was last seen on Nov. 14, 1986, when she was working at Mount Vernon Realty in the 300 block of Garrison Road.

The office closed at 9 p.m. that night, though Lard never made it home

The next morning, employees of other businesses in the area were getting ready to open for the day and discovered a scene at the realty office that indicated there was some sort of horrific struggle, the sheriff’s office said.

Both Lard and her vehicle were missing from the scene, and detectives from the sheriff’s office, with the help of the Virginia State Police Crime Scene Unit and the FBI, processed the scene and collected evidence, including blood.

On Nov. 16, 1986, two juveniles were playing in a wooded area in Woodbridge, Virginia when they discovered a body under a pile of discarded carpet. Stafford’s detectives also processed that scene, along with the FBI and Prince William detectives, and the body was identified as Jacqueline Lard.

Her missing vehicle was found on Dec. 18, 1986, in Fairfax County, which also presented investigators with additional evidence to process.

While investigators from all the agencies involved exhausted all the leads, none led to the identification of a suspect and the case went cold.

As forensic investigative genetic genealogy improved, Stafford County Sheriff D.P. Decatur, Jr. and Detective D.K. Wood pounced at the opportunity to use the advancements to possibly identify the killer.

Wood worked with Parabon NanoLabs, which provides DNA phenotyping, to analyze the DNA found at the crime scene, which linked the murder of Lard to the unsolved murder of Amy Baker, who was murdered in Fairfax County in 1989.

Stafford and Fairfax County investigators worked together to bring the murder suspect to justice, and on Dec., 14, 2023, they were able to get a name.

Following up on leads created by modern technology, investigators obtained a search warrant to get DNA from Harrison, and in February, the Department of Forensic Science reported the DNA was a match.

Harrison was indicted by a Stafford County grand jury on Monday, and he was arrested Tuesday.

He has since been placed in the Rappahannock Regional Jail and is being held without bond.

The Fairfax County Police Department is collaborating with prosecutors to establish charges against Harrison for Baker’s murder, as well.

According to the Fairfax Police Department, 18-year-old Baker was last seen leaving a relative’s house in Falls Church on the night of March 29, 1989.

Her car was found on the side of Interstate 95 later that night. Amy’s body was found on March 31, 1989, in a wooded area off the same interstate.

A man was charged after the discovery of remains in a missing persons investigation in St. Clair County.

The St. Clair County Sheriff’s Office said Maxwell Allen St. John was charged with felony murder and abuse of a corpse in connection to the disappearance of 30-year-old Kyla Elaine Bobo.

Bobo was reported missing from the Moody area by family members in February of 2022.

Her family never stopped looking for her. Kyla Bobo’s Mentor Ivi McDaniel said, “It was beautiful that was the deep love a family – sisters and brothers have for an individual they kept looking even if other people wasn’t looking and they felt other people weren’t giving it their best.”

And now it’s brought some sort of closure to her family and friends that say they’ve came to terms with this tragedy already, and someone needs to be held responsible for what happened.

That’s what her sister Anna Stewart said, “For so long we didn’t know where she was or what had happened. We’re just relieved.”

The sheriff’s office said numerous tips led to the discovery of skeletal remains in November of 2023, which it said were confirmed in a preliminary investigation.

The sheriff’s office said St. John was extradited from Bullock Correctional Facility where he was serving an 11-year sentence for rape.

Maxwell St. John, 35, of Pell City, who is serving an 11-year sentence for rape in Bullock County Correctional Facility, was arrested last month in the murder of 30-year-old Moody resident Kyla Elaine Bobo, said St. Clair County Sheriff Billy J. Murray.

Bobo’s family reported her missing in February 2022.

In November, skeletal remains were found in a wooded area of St. Clair County near Pell City, said Murray.

The St. Clair County Criminal Investigation Unit, the St. Clair County Drug Enforcement Unit, and Jacksonville State University Center for Applied Forensics collected the remains.

The Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences conducted DNA testing on the remains, which were identified in February as belonging to Bobo.

St. John was arrested on one count of felony murder and one count of abuse of a corpse, Murray said.

St. John was extradited from Bullock Correctional Facility to the St. Clair County jail, where he is being held without bond.

The FBI, Jacksonville State University Center for Applied Forensics, Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences, Pell City Police Department, Ashville Police Department, RAT-SAR K9, and their team contributed to the investigation.

“I would like to give a special thanks to the St. Clair County Drug Enforcement Unit for their hard work and tireless efforts to bring this case to where we are today,” Murray said. “I would like to say thank you to the family of Kyla who assisted law enforcement in remarkable ways to bring this case to a successful conclusion.
