We were there the moment the gates opened for Barber. Corrections officials drove her to a nearby parking lot where family and friends greeted her, including her husband and son.

Barber was pregnant with her son when she killed her grandparents with the help of her 29-year-old boyfriend Clinton Johnson. Johnson died in prison in 1999.

Gov. Roy Cooper commuted her sentence on the recommendation of the Juvenile Sentencing Board.

Barber met her husband, William Scales, while incarcerated, so this was the first time many of her loved ones have ever seen her outside of prison.

She left the prison with her husband and a caravan of cars following them.

mency by Governor Cooper got to walk out of prison Thursday morning.

April Barber, who was granted clemency in early March, walked out of Anson Correctional Institute around 9:45 a.m. and was greeted by a handful of family and friends.

‘Freedom fighting missionaries’ gave April a check for $500 to help her get established as she begins her new life.

FOX8 wasn’t allowed to ask questions, but overheard April tell someone she felt “amazing.”

April Leigh Barber was sentenced to two consecutive life terms in 1992, when she was 16 years old, after being found responsible for the deaths of Aaron and Lillie Barber in North Wilkesboro. The Barbers had adopted April as an infant, and they had fought over her romance with a man more than twice her age. They died on Labor Day 1991.

In his commutation, Cooper cited the facts that Barber, now 46, has been employed and participated in significant programming at the prison and had earned her General Education Degree and a paralegal certification.

The commutation order includes specific requirements that Barber must meet and sets her release day for March 24.

Commutations are recommended to the governor by the Juvenile Sentence Review Board that he established by executive order last year. The applications were reviewed by the Office of Executive Clemency, the Office of the General Counsel and the governor, the release said.

“North Carolina law continues to change to recognize that science is even more clear about immature brain development and decision making in younger people,” Cooper said in the release. “As people become adults, they can change, turn their lives around, and engage as productive members of society.”

Documents provided by the Watauga County Clerk of Court’s office shed some light on what Watauga County Sheriff’s Deputies encountered on the night of April 10 when the bodies of Jeffery David Borlase and Tanya Maye Borlase were discovered at their home in Deep Gap.

According to an affidavit from Detective Matthew F. Rollins, a call was received by Watauga County Communications at 10:32 p.m. on Wednesday, April 10. Deputies were dispatched to Orchard Road in Deep Gap following a call from a family member that reported a lot of blood and three missing family members.

When deputies arrived, they discovered blood on stone steps of the walkway that leads to the house. Blood was also found on the porch and the doormats just before entering the house. The door was unlocked and deputies proceeded into the home. Blood was found on the floor just inside the door and a blood trail from the entrance going up the main stairs of the residence.

Outside, deputies searched the property and discovered Jeffery Borlase’s body under a hammock behind an outbuilding with puncture wounds to the abdomen.

Deputies continued to search the scene and located a truck in the woods that “appeared to be an attempt to hide the vehicle.” The truck, a 2001 Ford F-150, belonged to the family and had been reported missing. Deputies quickly discovered another deceased victim identified as Tanya Borlase. She was in the bed of the truck covered in a blanket with bags of mulch piled on top of her.

While detectives were still at the Deep Gap crime scene, court documents state that the Watauga County Sheriff’s Office was notified that Tristan Noah Borlase, 17, had been detained and taken into custody in Johnson County, Tennessee. Borlase was driving a truck that was registered to his father and had a female, Evelyn Faith Jackson, in the vehicle with him. According to the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office, Borlase and Jackson both had blood on their clothing and search warrants were issued for both of their cellphones.

Tristan Borlase was charged with two counts of murder and is being held without bond. Borlase will appear in court on May 7. No additional charges against other individuals in this investigation are pending at this time. Defensive attorney Garland Baker is representing Borlase.

Other court documents show that search warrants were issued for the search of a home DVR, a ring.com doorbell camera system, a Snapchat account that is believed to belong to Tristan Borlase and a total of five cellphones that may have pertinent information involving the crimes that occurred.

Brian Moses Other News

One person is in custody after two people were pronounced dead Wednesday night and a child found with life-threatening injuries at an apartment complex in Lexington.

Next-door neighbors say there was blood on the steps at an apartment unit off Burgess Street. They also say there was blood on the gravel next to it.

As of now, the stairs have been cleaned.

Lexington Police have arrested 54-year-old Brian Keith Moses of Winston-Salem after they say two men were found dead inside.

“This man did not deserve that,” said Octavia Silei, the neighbor who lives next door.

The victims have been identified as 61-year-old Robert Stowe and 56-year-old Lionel Coker.

Neighbors say the scene last night was just smoky. That’s when they say they heard bullets.

“Literally, that’s next door,” Silei said. “The bullets could have came through the wall or anything.”

Speaking of one of the victims, Silei says he was loved in the community.

“You could be walking down the street, oh you need something to eat, oh come and get you a plate, that was the kind of guy he was,” she said.

A 911 caller told police that blood was on the steps and a gun was in the parking lot.

The Lexington Police Department says officers responded to the apartment to assist the Lexington Fire Department with the crime and forced their way in.

“As the officers went into the apartment, they immediately encountered smoke,” said Police Chief Robby Rummage. “They they made their way through the apartment to look at what’s going on and they saw two adults in the apartment with obvious traumatic injuries.”

Police say the fire started from the stove. It was not a structure fire.

We’re told officers also found a 3-year-old girl inside the unit suffering from traumatic injuries.

“They grabbed that young child and ran out the door and ran up the street to where Lexington firefighters were sitting there waiting,” the chief said. “They immediately started rendering first aid.”

Officers say they worked with the Winston-Salem Police Department to locate the suspect, Brian Moses’ home, where his vehicle was.

They say it matched the description that a Burgess Street resident gave them.

“This was senseless violence that at this point some of the reasons behind this are unknown.” Chief Rummage said.

Authorities say it was not uncommon for Moses to visit the home as he was an acquaintance the residents. They say the shooting was not random and Moses is the only suspect.

“I saw the gun,” Silei said. “The gun was laying in the gravel with a puddle of blood with eye glasses and a remote.”

Silei says she’s looking for a new place to live and says she’s still trying to process the incident.

“You could tell that he was struggling, that he was fighting, that he was defending himself,” she said.

Now, the 3-year-old girl is still at a N.C. Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem recovering with her parents by her side, Lexington Police say.

The suspect Brian Moses has been charged with two counts of murder, arson, robbery with a dangerous weapon and possession of a firearm by felon.

He will be booked at the Davidson County jail.

David Little Charged In Carolyn James Murder

david little mugshot

David Little has been charged in the murder of his roommate Carolyn James who disappeared a few days ago. According to police reports David Little would confess to killing Carolyn James after he called 911. When police performed a well being check they would find the body of Carolyn James inside of the home. As of yet no motive or how Carolyn James was killed has yet to be released. For the reason on why David Little is smiling in his mugshot is also unknown

David Little More News

David Little has been charged with murdering a 71-year-old woman, who he was renting a room from in Union County, police said.

Officers responded to a home Friday at around 6 p.m. on Ashie Avenue for a welfare check. Neighbors said the woman who lived there had not been seen recently.

Once police got inside the home, they found Carolyn James dead. Investigators said James’ cause of death was suspicious and determined that David Little, 31, was a person of interest in the case

Stallings police told Channel 9 that Little was in Charlotte Friday night and called 911, confessing to killing his roommate. Charlotte-Mecklenburg police then responded to his location and took him into custody. Little was then transferred to the Stallings Police Department.

“He actually called 911 in Charlotte and said he had just murdered his roommate,” said Assistant Chief James Perry.

After further investigation, Little was charged with first-degree murder. He is currently being held at the Union County Jail without bond.

A neighbor told Channel 9 that she got a text from a friend worried about James. On Friday, Theresa said she used a key James gave her to let officers inside for a welfare check.

“They had a pact as she called it that they would call or text one another because they were both single ladies and she hadn’t heard from Carolyn,” Theresa said.

She said she was worried about her friend renting rooms, and that she recalled James wanting Little to move out because of some strange behavior.

“We said, ‘off the internet’ maybe that’s not such a good idea.’ This fellow and one other I did not get good feelings about,” Theresa said.

Police said this does not appear to be a random act and that there is no threat to the public. Detectives are still working to learn Little’s motive.

“Carolyn was special. She was a friend to my mom. She was willing to take my mom to medical appointments,” Theresa said. “She will be missed. She will be greatly missed.”

Anyone with any information on this case is asked to contact the Stallings Police Department at 704-821-0300.
