Sydney Powell Case

An Ohio woman bludgeoned her mother with a frying pan and stabbed her dozens of times after her parents found out she was kicked out of college for poor grades.

Sydney Powell, 23, of Akron, was convicted last week of two counts of murder, felonious assault and tampering with evidence for the killing of 50-year-old Brenda Powell in the family’s home, according to the Summit County Prosecutor’s Office.

Sydney, who had been out on bail since her arraignment, sobbed when the jury verdict was read in Summit County Common Pleas Court. She was immediately taken into custody.

“We are disappointed with the jury’s verdict. We felt that the science overwhelmingly proved insanity, and we will file an appeal,” Sydney’s attorney, Donald Malarcik, told Fox News Digital.

On March 3, 2020, Sydney’s father, Steven Powell, could not access the portal to pay her tuition, setting in motion that afternoon’s deadly confrontation with her mother.

Sydney, then 19, confessed to her father that she had been expelled from Mount Union University and had been keeping it a secret for months, according to CourtTV.

She had failed three of her four classes in December 2019 but continued to live on campus and attend sorority meetings until school officials evicted her from her dorm on Feb. 24, 2020.

For a week, the young woman stayed in hotels rather than tell her parents the truth

After Steven told his wife about the weeks-long deceit, she returned home from her job at Akron Children’s Hospital as a child life specialist to discuss the matter with her daughter.

School officials testified that while they were on the phone with Brenda, they heard repeated thuds and screaming, then the call disconnected.

One of the officials tried to call back, and Sydney answered, pretending to be her mother. However, the official did not buy it and called police.

Prosecutors say that Sydney repeatedly beat her mother in the head with the cast-iron skillet then retrieved a steak knife and stabbed her nearly 30 times.

“She had to switch weapons and keep attacking her,” assistant prosecutor Brian Stano told jurors. “That is purposeful. That is trying to end someone.”

After the attack, Sydney shattered a window to stage a break-in, according to prosecutors.

When police arrived, Sydney Powell said an intruder had entered the house, that her mother told her to run and, upon her return, she found her mother on the floor.

Her attorneys admitted that Sydney killed her mother but argued that she suffered from schizophrenia and could not appreciate at that moment that her actions were wrong. Her father and grandmother testified on her behalf, but the jury rejected the insanity defense.

Sylvia O’Bradovich, a psychologist hired by prosecutors, acknowledged that Sydney suffered from mental illness but argued that she understood right from wrong when she brutally lashed out at her mother.

Sonny Kim News

James Brazzell said Sonny Kim was not his normal self the night he shot his sister eight times and killed her in their Martinez home just six days before Christmas in 2016.

“His eyes were black. He was unfocused. He was not there,” said Brazzell, Kim’s stepfather. “His expression, his voice – everything about him was not Sonny. It was not the Sonny we all know.”

Kim, 19, pleaded guilty by reason of mental illness to felony murder, malice murder, two counts of possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony and aggravated assault on Friday. Judge James Blanchard sentenced him to life in prison on the murder counts with a possibility of parole, plus 20 years for the possession charges and five years for the assault. He will be eligible for parole in 30 years

Kim was 16 when he killed his 23-year-old sister, Ashley Kim, just as Brazzell and Kim’s mother were getting into bed. Kim tried to shoot Brazzell when he entered the living room but could not load the magazine into the gun. Kim later told investigators he planned to kill his mother, stepfather and sister and commit suicide.

Family members including Kim’s mother, Nicci Brazzell, strongly opposed statements from Assistant District Attorney Ricky Coates that Kim killed his sister out of jealousy. She graduated from Evans High School and was attending college in Colorado, and she was home for Christmas break when she was killed.

Kim was mostly home-schooled and completed high school at age 15 and was attending Georgia Military College, according to Augusta Chronicle archives. While his sister was outgoing, Kim was more reserved and did not enjoy attention.

“Sonny loved his sister more than he loved anybody,” his stepfather said. “He loved his mother and loved myself, but his sister Ashley was his favorite person.”

Nicci Brazzell left the courtroom several times, and family members consoled her as she watched her son stand before the judge. She said that on the night of the murder, she believes she was looking at something “dark and evil” in her son that she has never seen before or since.

“I would love to take my son home now,” Brazzell said through tears. “I would just love to give him a hug and a kiss because I know that he’s not a murderer.

Dr. Allison Paganelli, a forensic psychologist who has been working with Kim since April 2017, said that after interviews with Kim and his mother, multiple tests and reviewing records, there are still many unanswered questions, including why he would kill his sister.

“While Sonny was able to remember these events, he also described that it was like watching himself or another person that looked like him doing those things,” she said.

After watching his interview with investigators, which included multiple instances of Kim talking to himself and to unseen people, Kim told Paganelli that it was like looking into a parallel dimension.

Paganelli said that from her experience with Kim, he meets the criteria for an autism spectrum disorder that usually begins to exhibit symptoms in early childhood. A person with the disorder has problems socializing with others and expressing emotions.

Kim also has a history of being exposed to traumatic events because of his biological father, including being neglected. Because of the psychosis episodes in the interrogation video and Kim’s young age, Paganelli believes his psychological issues will grow into something bigger. Kim was also conducting self-harm by banging his head against the wall and window, biting his arm and breaking his tooth at the Regional Youth Detention Center.

Because of Kim’s guilty plea by reason of mental illness, he will receive psychiatric care while serving his sentence.

John Totherow Murders Mother In South Carolina

John Totherow south carolina

John Totherow was a fourteen year old teen killer from South Carolina when he would murder his mother

According to court documents police were called to a home in York County South Carolina where they believed an armed intruder was barricaded in the home. Soon police would realize the armed suspect was a fourteen year old boy. When police finally entered the home they would discover the body of Alethea Lisa Puckett Totherow who had been shot multiple times and her son John would be taken into custody

Prosecutors were attempting to get the fourteen year old moved to adult court where he would have faced a life sentence if convicted of the murder however the father of John Totherow did not want this scenario for his son. John would plead guilty to voluntary manslaughter and would be sentenced to twenty eight years in prison

John Totherow News

A 16-year-old charged with killing his mother in York County last year accepted a plea deal before a judge sentenced him.

The Sutton Springs Road incident shut down the area for hours with the SWAT team responding. At that time, police believed an armed intruder was inside the home.

Hours later, police arrested John Totherow, who was 14 years old at the time of the murder. Prosecutors said this was a difficult case given the age of the defendant and the victim being his mother.

The state tried him as an adult when the teen accepted the plea deal, but the teen’s father didn’t want his son to serve life in prison

“His father is understandably in a position that none of us would ever want to be in,” Whitney Payne, the senior solicitor for the 16th Circuit Solicitor’s Office, said.

Kenny Totherow told the court he’s in a difficult place today because he would likely never see his son again. He recounted hugging and kissing his wife, Alethea Lisa Puckett Totherow, and his son John before leaving for work that morning.

He checked in with his wife around lunch and said he would see her later.

“Little did I know that all hell would break loose in my home,” Kenny Totherow said.

Prosecutors said John Totherow shot and killed his mother at their Sutton Springs Road home. An autopsy report showed Lisa Totherow had 12 gunshot wounds and six projectiles were recovered from her body.

Despite what happened, Kenny Totherow said he still loves his son.

“I’m sure everybody in this room looks at me and says, ‘How could you still love your son?’ Very simply, my son was a gift from God above,” said Totherow.

John Totherow, now 16, was originally charged with murder, but the solicitor’s office reduced that to voluntary manslaughter and possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime after a plea agreement.

“Your honor we had to balance in the case the interest of protecting the public and the interest of justice, with the fact we were looking at a 14-year-old,” Payne said.

The solicitor told the judge the juvenile system was not adequate in this case because the defendant would have been released within three to five years, so he was tried as an adult when he accepted the plea deal.

“In weighing all of this, it’s murder. I mean that’s what it is,” Nathan Sheldon, attorney for John Totherow, said. “So the benefit of being able to plea to manslaughter is a benefit that we are saving hopefully years of this young man’s life.”

It’s a wish the father had as prosecutors tried the case.

“I’m probably not going to ever see him on the outside again,” Kenny Totherow said. “I’m never going be able to go to a ballgame with a grand youngin.”

As the father finished his remarks in court, he asked the judge to hug his son one last time.

“I will not give up on him. Everybody else in this room may give up on him with the exception of a few people that’s sitting here with me today, but I won’t give up on him,” Kenny Totherow said.

The judge agreed on the plea agreement with John Totherow facing 28 years in prison and required to serve 85% of that sentence. Totherow’s attorney said he will likely only serve 24 years.

Mason Sisk More News

An Alabama teenager was sentenced to life in prison for murdering his parents and three younger siblings as a judge said the crime was “draped in unmitigated evil.”

Mason Sisk, who was just 14 when he shot each of his family members through the head, was unmoved by the sentencing in Limestone County, reported WHNT.

Sisk did not face the death penalty because of his age at the time he committed the crime in September 2019.

Handing down the sentence of life without parole, Limestone County Circuit Judge Chad Wise said that Sisk’s crime was “ghastly, disturbing, and draped in unmitigated evil” and deserved the utmost punishment.

A jury in the case deliberated for only two hours before finding 18-year-old Sisk guilty of the murder of his father John Sisk, 38, adoptive mother Mary Sisk, 35, and half-siblings Kane, six, Rorrie, four, and Colson, six months.

“I’ve prosecuted a lot of people in my career, and I can tell you that out of all of those people, only four out of five people scare the hell out of me and he’s at the top of my list.” Limestone County District Attorney Brian Jones said in a statement.

“Mason Sisk is clearly one of the most dangerous people who will ever be sentenced in Limestone County. With this sentence today, Judge Wise has ensured that Mason Sisk will NEVER threaten another child’s safety and wellbeing.”

Prosecutors said that Sisk stole the murder weapon from a family friend and then confessed the crime to his then-girlfriend.

He also claimed he wanted to become a contract killer after bragging that he killed his family in four seconds.

Sisk explained his motivation for the murder to investigators in a taped conversation obtained by The Associated Press.

“Yeah, they argue a lot, and I got fed up with it,” Sisk told authorities, according to the news organisation. “And the kids were going through a lot.”

Authorities also stated that Sisk had previously tried to fatally poison his stepmother by putting peanut butter in her coffee, which she was severely allergic to.

Nicolle Sanchez-Peralta More News

Three former Columbia-area residents were handed lengthy prison sentences for the kidnapping and murder of 15-year-old Sanaa Amenhotep. Nicolle Sanchez-Peralta, Treveon J. Nelson and Jaylen S. Wilson were sentenced Tuesday for abducting and killing Amenhotep, who vanished from outside her home in Columbia, South Carolina, in April 2021. She was found three weeks later in a shallow grave in Lexington County.

The murder of Amenhotep, who was remembered for her bright and bold personality, and the subsequent arrest of three other teens, who were friends of Amenhotep’s, sent shock waves through the Midlands and galvanized activists in the Black community who criticized law enforcement’s response to her disappearance.

“The abduction and murder of Sanaa Amenhotep shocked the conscience of our community. A crime of this nature will not be tolerated,” said 11th Circuit Solicitor, Rick Hubbard, who prosecuted the case along with his deputy, Suzanne Mayes. “Our hearts are with the family of Sanaa and we pray that this conclusion will bring some measure of justice.”

Nicolle Sanchez-Peralta, 19, was found guilty of kidnapping and murder following a trial in May. She was sentenced to 65 years. Nelson, 20, and Wilson, 20, pleaded guilty early this year to charges of murder, kidnapping, criminal conspiracy, and possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime. Both were sentenced to 60 years in prison The sentences must be served in their entirety and do not allow for parole. “I am sending a message,” stated Judge Debra McCaslin, a circuit court judge. “Our youth is killing our youth.

Testimony presented during the trial of Nicolle Sanchez-Peralta established that Amenhotep was beaten and was shot 14 times at the crime scene. The defendants buried her body in a shallow grave. “This young lady with so much potential and promise was brutally tortured and killed by her peers,” Hubbard said. Wilson and Sanchez-Peralta were under the age of 18 at the time of the murder. Amenhotep’s body was found on April 29, 2021, in a wooded area of Batesburg-Leesville, near Interstate 20. Her family mobilized a widespread effort to find her, calling on law enforcement, the press and social media to help find their daughter.

Amenhotep’s father, Sharif Amenhotep traveled from New Jersey to Columbia to organize searches of abandoned hotels and canvassed gas stations and other businesses looking for his daughter.

In a statement released to the press, Hubbard thanked both the Lexington and Richland County Sheriff’s Departments for their assistance in the investigation. But following Amenhotep’s abduction, many in Columbia’s Black community were critical of what they characterized as a slow response from law enforcement. “We need to have more accountability and more community, not just as a Black people but as human beings,” said Amenhotep’s mother, Saleemeh Graham-Flemming. “If it was just me, my daughter might have still been missing.”

Activists at the time called on the Richland County Sheriff’s Department and law enforcement generally to show more urgency when Black children are reported missing and to treat these cases as abductions when parents say they believe it’s a kidnapping case. Since her daughter’s death, Graham-Flemming has started the “Cakie Scholarship,” named after Amenhotep’s nickname. It raises money to send at-risk youths to trade school on a full scholarship.
