An escaped inmate and his alleged accomplice, both members of a white supremacist gang, were arrested in Twin Falls, Idaho, on Thursday afternoon after a massive manhunt.

Inmate Skylar Meade escaped from a medical center in Boise early Wednesday morning after Nicholas Umphenour allegedly opened fire on corrections officers who were taking Meade back to prison.

The suspects were located in the Twin Falls area at around 2 p.m. local time Thursday, Boise Police Chief Ron Winegar said at a news conference. After a short vehicle pursuit, the suspects were taken into custody separately. No shots were fired.

Two homicides committed in the last 24 hours in Idaho are being investigated as possibly linked to the suspects, Idaho State Police Lt. Colonel Sheldon Kelley said. The suspects were found driving a Honda Civic that police said belonged to one of the victims.

The homicide victims, both men, were discovered in separate counties — one in Nez Perce and one in Clearwater, the city of Boise disclosed in a press release Thursday afternoon

Once Umphenour was identified as a potential suspect, investigators looked into his connections to Meade, Josh Tewalt, director of the state’s Department of Correction, said at Thursday’s conference

In addition to both being documented members of the white supremacist gang the Aryan Knights, the two men had both periodically lived in the same housing unit in the Idaho Maximum Security Institution, where Umphenour was in custody from December 2020 to January 2024, officials said. They also shared common acquaintances both in and out of custody.

Tewalt said that the suspects’ gang involvement didn’t necessarily indicate that the escape was a “gang-sanctioned event,” adding that the department was monitoring the Aryan Knights in prison “to mitigate the damage that gangs can do.”

“Independent of their actions, we work hard every day to try and disrupt any organized criminal activity that happens in our facilities,” Tewalt said Thursday.

“Law enforcement believes the capture was successful due to the hundreds of tips from the public and the multiple responding law enforcement agencies,” the city of Boise said in its press release

Meade engaged in “self-injurious” behavior Tuesday night, after which officers determined he needed to be transferred off-site for care, Tewalt said on Wednesday.

Umphenour attacked and fired at two officers at Saint Alphonsus Regional Medical Center at around 2:15 a.m. Wednesday, officials said. A third person, later determined to be a corrections officer, was shot by responding Boise police officers.

One of the injured corrections officers was released from the hospital Wednesday evening, while the two other injured officers remain hospitalized, Tewalt said Thursday.

“They are stable, improving, and I think with today’s news their spirits are lifted,” Tewalt said, calling the incident a “tough ordeal for corrections family.”

Skylar Meade and Nicholas Umphenour More News

The escaped convict and alleged accomplice sought in an Idaho manhunt are now accused of killing two people while they were on the run, authorities said Thursday.

Skylar Meade and Nicholas Umphenour were arrested after being accused of an ambush and shooting at a hospital Wednesday that injured three officers, Boise police said at a press conference.

Boise Police Department Chief Ron Winegar said the two are considered suspects in two northern Idaho homicides of two men who were found dead “rural Idaho, not inside of city limits.”

Officers also found the handcuffs Meade escaped in at the scene.

Police found the vehicle Meade and Umphenour used to escape in northern Idaho, the chief said. He added that the duo fled the area in a different vehicle.

“The motive and why they did what they did, I don’t know,” Winegar said.

Meade fled the Saint Alphonsus Regional Medical Center, about three miles west of the state capital’s downtown area, before two state corrections officers prepared to take him back to prison. Umphenour opened fire in front of the emergency room early Wednesday morning, the Boise Police Department reported.

Meade is a convicted felon who escaped serving a 20-year prison sentence for assault or battery with an enhancement for use of a deadly weapon from a 2017 shooting, IDOC records show. While fleeing from a traffic stop amidst a police chase, he fired several shots at a law enforcement officer.

Meade, who officials described as a white supremacist gang member, also had prior convictions from felony possession of a controlled substance and grand theft to introduction of contraband into a correctional facility. His incarceration began in October 2016 with his most recent sentence set to end in 2036.

Umphenour is considered an Meade’s accomplice and associate, detectives said

Police did not release Umphenour’s age or clarify whether he has a local criminal history.

About 48 hours after a Cape Coral teen’s shooting death, Cape Coral Police say they’ve arrested a teen linked to the Sunday night slaying.

Lisa Greenberg, spokesperson with Cape Coral Police, said officers arrested Thomas Roy Stein, 16, of North Fort Myers, who faces homicide charges. He was in court early Wednesday.

The News-Press doesn’t typically name minors charged with crimes but is doing so because of the severity of the charge.

“Our detectives know there are others involved in this homicide, and there is still more work to be done,” police said in a news release. “Cape Coral Police Department detectives’ diligent work around the clock continues today to narrow this investigation.”

Stein is accused in the Sunday night death of Kayla Rincon-Miller, 15, of Cape Coral. She and two friends had left a movie theater and were walking to a nearby McDonald’s.

One of the girls told detectives a car pulled up about 10:30 p.m. and blinded them with its lights before an unknown number of suspects jumped out of the car and tried to rob them.

Police report a witness said one person began to shoot, striking Rincon-Miller in the chest. The other two girls were not injured. The witness said she didn’t know who the shooter was.

Greenberg also said police have located the SUV, a silver Nissan Pathfinder rented by Stein’s mother.

She said the investigation continues and did not answer questions at the news conference, including if the mother would face charges as an accessory.

Greenberg said that, based on the evidence, police do not believe the shooting was a random act of violence

A witness who lives near the intersection of Southeast 20th Street and Southeast 16th Place, who wished to remain anonymous, said she heard about three gunshots.

She started a memorial in honor of Rincon-Miller on Monday, and added that “this could’ve been anyone’s child.”

On Monday evening, Cape Coral police forensics investigators and at least one K9 unit from the Lee County Sheriff’s Office began canvassing the area for evidence.

Forensics investigators with the police department placed at least five evidence markers at the scene.

Jail records indicate Stein is due in court April 8 for his arraignment. Cape Coral Police didn’t immediately confirm if either of his parents will face charges.

The department has been in touch with Rincon-Miller’s family to update them, Greenberg said. The family has a GoFundMe set up to raise money for funeral expenses. By Wednesday morning, it had raised nearly $9,000.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Cape Coral Police Department at (239) 574-3223.

Southwest Florida Crime Stoppers, who may be reached at 1-800-780-TIPS, are offering a cash reward of up to $3,000 for anyone whose anonymous tips help lead to an arrest. They said doorbell camera video may also be submitted.

Willie Pye Execution Scheduled For 3/20/24

willie pye

Willie Pye is scheduled to be executed by the State of Georgia for the murder of Alicia Lynn Yarbrough

According to court documents Willie Pye and Alicia Lynn Yarbrough were once in a relationship however it would end badly

Alicia Lynn Yarbrough would move into the home of another man and Willie Pye decided to rob them of their weapons. When they found Yarbrough alone with her baby, Pye would take items from the home and would kidnap Alicia and leaving the baby alone in the home

Willie Pye and the other people with him woukld take Alicia Lynn Yarbrough to a hotel where she would be sexually assaulted repeatedly. They would then take her to a remote location where Pye would fatally shoot the woman

Willie Pye would be arrested, convicted and sentenced to death

-Update – Willie Pye was executed on March 20 2024

Willie Pye News

A Georgia man should not be executed because he is intellectually disabled and feels remorse for killing his former girlfriend three decades ago, his lawyers wrote in seeking clemency for him.

Willie James Pye, 59, is scheduled to be put to death Wednesday using the sedative pentobarbital in what would be the state’s first execution in more than four years. Pye was convicted of murder and other crimes in the November 1993 killing of Alicia Lynn Yarbrough.

A clemency hearing is set for Tuesday. In Georgia, those hearings are conducted in secret, with the result announced afterward.

Now that his execution is imminent Willie Pye lawyers are claiming that his IQ is too low for him to be executed and he has shown remorse since the murder which took place in 1993

“Had defense counsel not abdicated his role, the jurors would have learned that Mr. Pye is intellectually disabled and has an IQ of 68,” Pye’s public defenders wrote in their clemency application.

“They also would have learned the challenges he faced from birth — profound poverty, neglect, constant violence and chaos in his family home — foreclosed the possibility of healthy development,” they wrote. “This is precisely the kind of evidence that supports a life sentence verdict.”

Pye’s lawyers also cited severe problems in the Spalding County justice system in the 1990s and said that Pye has been a positive influence on those around him while he’s been in prison.

Pye had been in an on-and-off romantic relationship with Yarbrough. At the time she was killed, Yarbrough was living with another man. Pye, Chester Adams and a 15-year-old boy had planned to rob that man and bought a handgun before heading to a party in Griffin, prosecutors have said.

The trio left the party around midnight and went to the house where Yarbrough lived, finding her alone with her baby. They forced their way into the house, stole a ring and necklace from Yarbrough and took her with them when they left, leaving the baby alone, prosecutors have said.

They drove to a motel, where they took turns raping Yarbrough and then left the motel with her in the teenager’s car, prosecutors have said. They turned onto a dirt road and Pye ordered Yarbrough out of the car, made her lie face down and shot her three times, according to court filings.

Yarbrough’s body was found a few hours after she was killed. Pye, Adams and the teenager were quickly arrested. Pye and Adams denied knowing anything about Yarbrough’s death, but the teenager confessed and implicated the other two.

The teenager reached a plea agreement with prosecutors and was the main witness at Pye’s trial. A jury in June 1996 found Pye guilty of murder, kidnapping, armed robbery, rape and burglary, and sentenced him to death.

Pye’s lawyers have argued in court filings that other statements the teen made are inconsistent with what he said at Pye’s trial. Those statements, as well as statements Pye made during trial, indicate that Yarbrough left the home willingly and went to the motel to trade sex for drugs, the lawyers said in court filings.

Pye’s lawyers also wrote in court filings that Pye was raised in extreme poverty in a home without indoor plumbing or access to sufficient food, shoes or clothing. His childhood was characterized by neglect and abuse by family members who abused alcohol, his lawyers wrote.

His lawyers also argued that Pye suffered from brain damage, potentially caused by fetal alcohol syndrome, that harmed his ability to plan and control his impulses. They also argue that he is intellectually disabled and is therefore ineligible for execution, citing the findings of several experts who evaluated him.

Pye’s lawyers have long argued that he should be resentenced because his trial lawyer didn’t adequately prepare for the sentencing phase of his trial. A three-judge panel of the 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals agreed with Pye’s lawyers in April 2021. But the full federal appeals court overturned that ruling in October 2022.

Adams, now 55, pleaded guilty in April 1997 to charges of malice murder, kidnapping with bodily injury, armed robbery, rape and aggravated sodomy. He got five consecutive life prison sentences and remains behind bars.

Carlos Scotland Murders Ashia Davis

carlos scotland michigan

Carlos Scotland is an alleged teen killer from Detroit Michigan who has been charged with the murder of transgender woman Ashia Davis

According to police reports Ashia Davis was fatally shot at a hotel in Detroit Michigan in June 2023 with the suspect caught on surveillance cameras running from the scene. When police arrived at the scene they would find Ashia Davis with a gunshot wound to the head

Detroit police announced that Carlos Scotland, who was seventeen at the time of the murder, has been arrested and charged with first degree murder and felony firearm. No word yet whether prosecutors will seek hate crime charges

Carlos Scotland News

A Highland Park teen has been charged in connection with the death of a transgender woman at a Highland Park hotel in 2023.

Carlos Lamar Scotland, 18, was arraigned Friday in Highland Park District Court on a charge of the first degree murder and felony firearm in connection with the fatal shooting of Ashia Davis, 36, also of Highland Park.

The shooting happened around 11 p.m. on June 1, 2023 at a hotel in the 16300 block of Woodward Avenue. When police arrived, they found Davis with a gunshot wound to her head.

A probable cause conference is scheduled for March 26.

Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Davis described Davis as “beloved” in her community. Her nickname was “Charm.” She’d recently finished nursing school and had planned to start a new job soon when she was killed.

Worthy also lamented how often the deaths of Black trans women go unnoticed, which is why a program called the Fair Michigan Justice Project was created along with the Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel. The program assists Michigan law enforcement officers and prosecutors in solving serious crimes against lesbians, gays, bisexuals, and transgender persons.

Worthy recalled a string of murders involving Black trans women near Palmer Park in Detroit, before the Fair Michigan project was created, and “no one seemed to care at all.”

“I mean no one,” she said during a press conference Friday. “Nothing was really being done. Their lives seemed to matter to no one.”

But now, officials say they’re working to change that.

Davis’s death in 2023 drew attention beyond Metro Detroit as LGBTQ+ residents marked Pride Month — she was murdered on the first day of Pridce Month — amid concerns from some activists about an increase in incidents targeting their community.

Carlos Scotland, who was 17 when the incident happened but has been charged as an adult, faces up to life in prison if convicted
