Zachary Burkhard would go over to a home in Springfield Virginia where he would fatally shoot both teens. A teenager was found guilty of manslaughter Monday in the shooting deaths of two high school students at a Springfield, Virginia, home last year, and ambulances responded to the courthouse when a victim’s mother and another relative collapsed in apparent shock over the verdict.

A Fairfax County jury found Zachary Burkard guilty of two counts of manslaughter, one count in the death of 16-year-old Calvin Van Pelt and the other for 17-year-old Ersheen Elaiaiser’s death.

Burkard, who was 18 at the time of the killings, was found “not guilty” of murder, a verdict that surprised and upset the victims’ families.

Elaiaisar’s mother collapsed on the courtroom floor right after the victim’s father gave his impact statement during a sentencing hearing that immediately followed the verdict.

“The pain will never go away,” Elaiaisar’s father said. “He didn’t deserve to die.”

A second relative of Elaiaisar collapsed at another point in the day, and medics took them away in an ambulance. Their condition is unknown at this time.

Van Pelt’s father, Michael Winfield, tearfully told the court, his son was his best friend

“It’s hard every day trying to take care of my kids,” Winfield said. “Knowing my son was shot in the back for a fist fight … for a fist fight.”

Van Pelt was the oldest of seven children.

The Van Pelt family gave the following statement:

“Although we disagree with the verdict, we thank the jury for their service. There is some consolation in knowing that some degree [of] justice has been served. We continue to grieve for our son, Calvin, who was a bright light in our family. We pray that no more families have to endure the agony of losing a child to gun violence.”

During a sentencing hearing, prosecutors argued for the maximum recommended sentence of 10 years for each manslaughter charge.

“Even with this punishment, the defendant will have an advantage that Ersheen and Calvin never will: He will have a life,” the prosecutor said.

But defense attorneys asked the jurors to impose a five-year term. They argued Burkard faced significant trauma in his life and said he was born to a drug-addicted mother before he was adopted.

When Burkard was 6 years old, the family was hit by a drunk driver and his father died, his attorneys said. Burkard saw his dead father at the crash scene and he had to undergo years of therapy and medication, they said.

Defense attorneys showed a photo of Burkard as a boy with the caption “A boy worth saving,” as they asked jurors for leniency.

Jurors will return to court Tuesday to determine a sentence.

Burkard testified last Tuesday, and told the jury he opened fire on April 25, 2021 because four teens had just beat up his friend and he was afraid they were all armed. He said he fired in self defense.

Elaiaiser was shot twice in the chest and Van Pelt was shot once in the back at a home in the 8000 block of Winding Way Court, prosecutors said. Both teens died.

Burkard showed little emotion when he took the stand, but said “no!” when asked if he meant to kill Elaiaiser.

He said he was in an ongoing dispute with Elaiaiser and was at his friend Nick’s house when he heard the 17-year-old was coming to the house with three others.

“I was scared. They said they would kill us. I was not prepared for this at all,” Burkard told the court.

Burkard admitted he had been dealing drugs and had taunted Elaiaiser in a video, which was shown to the jury.

He testified he was in a basement room when he heard his friend Nick get into a fight out in the garage.

“I opened the door. I was not planning to shoot anyone. I saw Nick on the ground with four people around him,” Burkard said. “I raised the gun and I told them to get back. Nick looked like he was unconscious. I raised and dropped the gun several times. Then, Ersheen started racing toward me. I thought he would pull out a gun and shoot me. I was terrified.”

On cross examination, Burkard admitted he made two videos in which he threatened Elaiaiser with guns and said the teen would be 6 feet under if he tried anything.

Caleb Sharpe More News

Caleb Sharpe, who previously pleaded guilty to killing one of his former classmates and shooting three other students at Freeman High School in Rockford, Washington, in 2017, was sentenced to 40 years in prison Friday.

Sharpe, 20, who was 15 years old at the time of the shooting, spoke publicly for the first time in five years, apologizing for his actions before he was sentenced, according to the Spokesman-Review, a newspaper that operates out of Spokane, Washington.

“There’s only really one thing that I can say,” Sharpe said, per the newspaper. “And that is, I am sorry.”

In January, he pleaded guilty to premeditated murder, three counts of attempted murder, and second-degree assault for the attack that took place on Sept. 13, 2017, FOX 28 of Spokane reported.

“That day showed me the true cost of evil. Everything that this community had to pay, my own family had to pay,” Sharpe added, the newspaper reported. “From that point on and now, evil has no place in my heart.”

Friday morning’s court hearing was somber as state prosecutors showed footage from the attack, recorded by the school’s surveillance camera.

Sharpe and his parents, Ben and Ericka Sharpe, watched as the video showed their son setting down a duffle bag in a hallway before pulling out an AR-15 and shooting several high school students.

Ami Strahan, the mother of Sam Strahan, a 15-year-old who died in the shooting, also watched and was seen covering her face as the video showed her son being shot twice and falling to the ground, the Spokesman reported.

The now deceased 15-year-old confronted Sharpe during the shooting and attempted to stop him.

Strahan spoke during the court hearing, where she called Sharpe an “evil, hateful human being” and pleaded for Spokane County Superior Court Judge Michael Price to sentence him to the longest possible time behind bars, FOX 28 reported.

Sharpe’s public defender Brooke Foley called for a fixed 20-year sentence, citing his age and immaturity at the time of the shooting.

Foley argued Sharpe should be considered a youthful offender as Washington state law says juveniles are less “culpable” for their crimes, the Spokesman reported.

Foley also urged the judge to consider the remainder of Sharpe’s life and his potential rehabilitation into society, following his sentence.

“His prospects for change and rehabilitation are strong,” the public defender argued, per the Spokesman report. “Justice is following the law, despite demands for blood.”

In response, Deputy Prosecutor Sharon Hedlund argued a heftier 35-year sentence would be more appropriate given the severity of the crime.

“His obsessive and compulsive tendencies were and are an issue,” Hedlund said.

According to the Spokesman, Price said the 35-year recommendation did not go far enough.

Price spoke for over an hour and said Sharpe “slaughtered” his classmates. He also explained Washington state’s legal guidelines before sentencing Sharpe to 40 years behind bars.

In the explanation, the judge said Sharpe was sentenced as an adult but did not receive the standard 75 to 90-year sentence due to another Washington law that limited the maximum sentence that could be applied to juveniles.

According to the report, Sharpe can appeal the sentence within the next 30 days.

Jared Leonard Little More News

A Weatherford teenager who shot a Poolville man he was trying to rob during a marijuana transaction in 2020 pled guilty to murder and was sentenced to 45 years in prison in district court in Weatherford on Monday.

Jared Leonard Little, now 20, was 17 when he shot Tommy Talley on the evening of April 24, 2020 on the side of Highway 199 near Talley’s Poolville home.

Parker County Sheriff’s Office deputies were dispatched to the residence in Poolville to assist another agency, according to the probable cause affidavit. Upon arrival, deputies observed Talley, 19, lying on his back with gunshot wounds on his upper left shoulder and below his right scapular region. He was pronounced deceased at the scene by EMS.

A witness reported going with Little to Talley’s home with the intent to steal the marijuana, according to the probable cause affidavit, and that when Talley came to the vehicle to make the transaction, Little held the marijuana and told the witness to drive off. Following a scuffle in the backseat of the vehicle, Little was observed shooting Talley. Little then told the witness to drive off, according to the affidavit.

Talley’s family attended the plea and sentencing hearing, which took place before Judge Craig Towson in the 43rd District Court.

In a victim impact statement, Talley’s sister told the courtroom that her brother loved fishing, was gentle, kind, fun-loving, and enjoyed quoting lines from movies while imitating the film character’s voice. She said that he was “larger than life” and that she is “still his biggest fan.”

Little also listened while a victim impact statement was read from Talley’s little brother. He said that “losing my best friend was one of the hardest things that I could imagine. I sit in silence waiting to hear his advice one more time.”

Two males were also charged with aggravated robbery stemming from the incident, according to a previous Weatherford Democrat article. Court records show jury trials for Israel Leon and Hunter Leblanc are set for September and October.

“Tommy’s family was supportive of this resolution as a way to guarantee that justice was served and that Mr. Little received a long prison sentence,” said District Attorney Jeff Swain, who handled the case along with Assistant District Attorney Abby Placke. “Mr. Little will be required to serve 22 years of his sentence before he is eligible for parole.

“Since he has a bit over two years of credit, that means he has at least 20 years still to go before the parole board will decide to keep or release him.”

Adrian Oswaldo Sura Reyes Charged With 2 Murders

Adrian Oswaldo Sura Reyes

Adrian Oswaldo Sura Reyes is a twenty four year old man from Pennsylvania who has been charged with 2 murders following a bizarre incident. According to police reports Adrian Oswaldo Sura Reyes would run into a large group of people killing one and injuring seventeen more. Adrian Oswaldo Sura Reyes would then flee the scene and head to a residence where he would beat his mother to death using a hammer. According to early reports Adrian Oswaldo Sura Reyes was upset with his mother over money. Now Adrian Oswaldo Sura Reyes is facing the death penalty.

Adrian Oswaldo Sura Reyes More News

Pennsylvania man is facing the death penalty after state police say he intentionally plowed his car into a community fundraiser, killing one person and injuring 17 others, before bludgeoning his mother to death.

Pennsylvania State Police say Adrian Oswaldo Sura Reyes, 24, drove into a crowd of about 75 people Saturday night, as they attended a fundraiser for the families of 10 people who died in a recent house fire.

An unidentified 50 year old woman was killed in the crash, and 17 others were injured.

Authorities say Adrian Oswaldo Sura Reyes then allegedly fled the scene, but was later spotted bludgeoning another woman to death in nearby Nescopeck. That woman has since been identified as Reyes’ mother, Rosa Reyes, 56.

Charging documents say he crashed into the fundraiser because he was ‘frustrated’ with his mother following a dispute about money issues before he killed her.

Adrian Oswaldo Sura Reyes was pictured being taken into custody early Sunday morning, and said ‘sorry’ as he was being led into a police vehicle, the Times Leader reports after allegedly confessing to bludgeoning his mother ‘four or five times.’

He is now charged with two counts of homicide and is being held at the Columbia County Correctional Facility without bail.

Adrian Oswaldo Sura Reyes is due back in court for a preliminary hearing on August 29. If convicted, he could face the death penalty.

Meanwhile, Geisinger Hospital has confirmed to ABC News that it was providing care for more than 15 patients involved in the attack at the fundraiser, including four who were in critical condition on Sunday.

Another three were taken to other hospitals, and had either been treated and released or were still being evaluated.

According to charging documents obtained by the Daily Beast,Adrian Oswaldo Sura Reyes admitted to police that he had bludgeoned his mother in the head ‘four or five times’ with a hammer.

He allegedly said he was tired of fighting with her about money and other issues and ‘wanted to be done with it.’

Adrian Oswaldo Sura Reyes allegedly explained that he had gotten into an argument with his mother earlier that night, and felt ‘extremely frustrated’ as he drove his car from his home in Nescopeck to Berwick, where she lived.

Then, as he drove past a restaurant called Intoxicology Department at around 6.15pm, he noticed the community members standing in the parking lot, circled back around and hit the gas, the charging documents allege.

The restaurant was holding a day-long event to raise money for the families of those killed in a fire earlier this month.

Just about six minutes later, police report, they received a call about a second car crash in neighboring Nescopeck, where a man was beating a woman with a hammer.

Police say they arrived on the scene and found the woman dead, and arrested the suspected killer. The vehicle in that incident matched the description of the one that had plowed through the crowd in Berwick moments earlier.

Adrian Oswaldo Sura Reyes had previously been arrested for another altercation with his mother on December 26, 2020, when the two got into an argument over a cellphone, the Daily Beast reports.

According to a Berwick Police Department report and court records from the time, Reyes snatched the phone from his mother’s hand and hit her in the face with it.

He pleaded guilty to an assault and harassment charge, and was sentenced to 12 months probation — which only ended last month.

Officials now say they have no reason to believe Reyes is a suspect in the fatal fire that killed 10 people and 13 dogs on August 5, the cause of which remains under investigation.

In a Facebook post, Intoxicology Department, the restaurant where the fundraiser was being held, said they will close their doors until further notice.

‘Today was an absolute tragedy. We will be closed until further notice. Please respect our privacy while we grieve and try to process the events that occurred. Thank you.’

Saturday’s victims were gathered at Intoxicology Department to raise money the families of those killed in the deadly fire in nearby Nescopeck on August 5.

It’s unclear what started the blaze in the home where 14 people lived, but Pennsylvania State Police said they had launched a ‘complex criminal investigation’.

State police said seven adults ranging from late teens to age 79 were killed along with children aged five, six and seven.

All 10 died of smoke inhalation, according to the Luzerne County coroner’s office.

A ruling on the manner of death – classifying the deaths as accidents or homicides – is pending the results of the state police investigation into the fire, officials said

The county’s district attorney, Sam Sanguedolce, said a preliminary investigation suggests the fire broke out on the front porch at around 2.30am.

Three people were able to escape the blaze, which destroyed the structure. The cause remains under investigation.

Nescopeck is a small town on the Susquehanna River, about 20 miles southwest of Wilkes-Barre.

One volunteer firefighter arrived to battle the blaze only to discover the victims were his own family, authorities said.

Harold Baker, a volunteer firefighter in the town of Nescopeck, said the 10 victims included his son, daughter, father-in-law, brother-in-law, sister-in-law, three grandchildren and two other relatives.

He said his two children and the other young victims were visiting their aunt and uncle’s home for swimming and other summertime fun.

He said 13 dogs were also in the two-story home, but didn’t say if he knew whether any survived.

‘All I wanted to do was go in there and get to these people, my family. That’s all that I was thinking about, getting in to them,’ Baker told the Associated Press.

Baker grabbed a hose and air pack, and started pouring water on the fire, desperate to make his way inside and calling out to his son. His chief realized whose house it was, and fellow firefighters escorted Baker back to the firehouse.

Baker said the address initially given for the call was a neighboring house. He realized it was his family members’ residence as the firetruck approached. He said his unit was the first on scene, and the house was already engulfed in flames.

‘There wasn’t nothing we could’ve done to get in there. We tried, but we couldn’t get in,’ said Baker, 57, who’s been a firefighter for 40 years.

His son, 19-year-old Dale Baker, had followed both of his parents into the fire service, joining when he was 16. Dale was among those killed in the blaze.

‘He said it all his life, he was just going to be like his dad,’ Harold Baker said.

Heidi Knorr, the Nescopeck Volunteer Fire Company secretary, called Dale Baker ‘such a fun-loving soul. He just loved life.’

As state police continued their probe, the first two funerals were held Friday afternoon, with mourners gathering at a funeral home in Mansfield to remember Ariana Trout, 7, and her brother, 5-year-old Bradley Trout.

Ariana ‘loved learning about styling hair and makeup,’ according to her obituary, while Bradley enjoyed spending time at the library and playing Pokemon GO. He would have turned 6 on Thursday.

More funerals were scheduled for Sunday and Monday, including a joint service for 19-year-old volunteer firefighter Dale Baker and his sister, Star Baker, 22.
