A 16-year-old boy accused of killing 14-year-old Jordan Dowdy in Oakland Park faces a first-degree murder charge in Broward County.

Broward Sheriff’s Office deputies identified the suspect as Ruben Whitworth, who they said stabbed Jordan during a fight on Monday at a house along Northeast Third Avenue, between 53rd Court and 56th Street.

BSO homicide detectives arrested Ruben, who turned 16 on July 31, and corrections processed his detention at the Juvenile Assessment Center

Kerry Pittillo and Akyra Gulley are among the neighbors who said the house operates as a group home for boys — some of whom are so troubled that they have made threats to hurt and kill vulnerable neighbors and pets.

“Police have been out here several times,” Pittillo said.

On Monday, Gulley was heartbroken when Jordan, who she said was one of the few boys in the home who was respectful to his neighbors, was covered in blood, as Oakland Park Fire Rescue paramedics tried to save his life.

BSO deputies reported Jordan died in the hospital. The Florida Department of Juvenile Justice released Ruben’s mugshot on Tuesday afternoon. His next court hearing is on Sept. 27.

Detectives asked anyone with information about this or other cases to call Broward County Crime Stoppers at 954-493-8477 to remain anonymous.

A hearing was held on Saturday for a 16-year-old accused of fatally stabbing another teenager during an altercation at a group home in Oakland Park.

Ruben Whitworth was charged with second-degree murder.

NBC6 is identifying Whitworth because he is being charged as an adult.

During the court hearing, the teen didn’t appear, but the judge denied him bond.

“He is not entitled to bond. He’ll be held no bond,” the judge said.

According to the Broward Sheriff’s Office, on Aug. 26, deputies and fire rescue crews responded to a home in the area near the 5400 block of Northeast 3rd Avenue and found the teen suffering from stab wounds.

A 911 call captured the moment when a man was pleading for help after Dowdy was stabbed.

“I have a bleeding suspect, could you send me law enforcement and send me paramedics, please?” the man said.

Paramedics eventually arrived at the scene and took over the situation.

The victim, identified as 14-year-old Jordan Dowdy, was taken to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Dowdy’s mother told NBC6 that the house is a foster home for teenage boys and said her son was bullied and threatened by other teens in the home.

She claims that when she complained to ChildNet, the agency responsible for her son’s care, to step in, nothing was done.

NBC6 reached out to the Department of Children and Families to ask about the case and is waiting to hear back.

Dowdy’s funeral is being held on Saturday.

Investigators confirmed that the adults tasked with supervising the teens inside the home are now being questioned.
