Albuquerque police have arrested a 14-year-old West Mesa High School student and charged him with murder in the shooting death of another student at the school on Friday.

Marcos Trejo was arrested Friday evening at a West Side home. He was charged with an open count of murder and evidence tampering and booked into the Bernalillo County Juvenile Detention Center, Albuquerque Police Department spokesman Gilbert Gallegos said in a news release.

Detectives investigating the shooting learned that the boy who was killed, 16-year-old Andrew Burson, had accused Trejo of stealing a gun he had purchased over the internet

Gallegos said Burson confronted Trejo just east of West Mesa High, and an altercation ensued.

“Burson started to run after Trejo when Trejo produced a handgun and fired 5-6 rounds at Burson,” Gallegos said in the release. “Burson was struck several times by gunfire.” The boy died at the scene.

A STUDENT was fatally shot outside a high school in New Mexico as the gunman remains on the loose.

The shooting unfolded on Friday morning near West Mesa High School in Albuquerque.

Police Chief Harold Medina said a student was exiting the school and got into a fight with another juvenile, and the shooting happened shortly afterward.

The student, whose age and name remain unknown, died from their injuries.

The shooter has been identified, Medina said in a press conference; however, they have not been detained.

The police chief assured residents in the area that there was no threat to the public.

Investigators believe the shooter was a juvenile, but it is unknown if that person was a student at West Mesa High School.

Albuquerque Public Schools Superintendent Scott Elder told KOAT the firearm never made it on campus.

Elder said while the shooting was not on campus, it was far too close.

“It’s deeply disturbing. It’s very hard for our schools … We really need to work together to make sure this doesn’t happen,” Elder told the outlet.

Albuquerque Mayor Tim Keller advised adults to speak up if they think a student is in possession of a gun.

“If you think another student has a gun, please say something. This is a related conversation that’s been happening all across America, and now we’re seeing it in Albuquerque.

“That nightmare is real for every single parent who is in line to pick up their child. One parent got the worst call of all,” Keller added.

Officials asked families to pick up students directly from the school.

Video from the scene showed a crowd of parents on the campus grounds picking up their children.

Paul Apodaca Indicted On 3 Murders

Paul Apodaca

Paul Apodaca is a man from New Mexico who police believe is a serial killer and has just been indicted on three counts of murders and sexual assaults. According to police between the years of 1988 to 1989 three people were murdered in New Mexico: 13-year-old Stella Gonzales, 21-year-old Althea Oakeley, and 19-year-old Kaitlyn Arquette. Stella Gonzales and Kaitlyn Arquette were both fatally shot while Althea Oakeley was stabbed to death. According to New Mexico police Paul Apodaca confessed last year to multiple sexual assaults and murders throughout the 1980’s and 1990’s. New Mexico police have been going crazy looking at other sexual assault cases and murders that this alleged serial killer may have been responsible for. One of the victims Kaitlyn Arquette was the daughter of writer Lois Duncan who wrote the best selling book “Who Killed My Daughter”. Paul Apodaca has been in and out of the system since he was a juvenile for a series of sexual assaults and other charges. In 1996 Paul Apodaca was sentenced to 20 years in prison for the sexual assault of a young woman, his brother Mark Apodaca was sentenced to life for murder for the same attack.

Paul Apodaca More News

Paul Apodaca is no stranger to the New Mexico court system. He’s been convicted of both rape and assault charges dating back to when he was a juvenile.

But now Apodaca is saying he’s also responsible for three murders from the ’80s.

“Apodaca has admitted to additional shootings and murders, including the homicide of 18-year-old Kaitlyn Arquette in 1989,” Albuquerque Police Department Chief Harold Medina said.

It was 30 years ago that Arquette was driving east on Lomas in downtown Albuquerque when she was shot – causing her to veer off the road and hit a light pole. Her murder received national attention thanks to Arquette’s mother, who wrote the book “Who Killed My Daughter

Her family has never stopped looking for that answer.

“The Arquette family has been involved since the beginning, they have been speaking to detectives about some of these updates,” APD Deputy Commander Kyle Hartsock said.

The family even hired Pat Caristo as a private investigator, who – 20 years ago – combed through KOB 4’s file footage looking for clues in the case.

APD said they are trying to put all the pieces together before they release any more information.

“It’s hard for us to share a lot of information, even with the family, until the case is charged, even if it is 32 years old,” Hartsock said.

APD’s goal is to gather enough evidence to charge Apodaca with Arquette’s murder.

When police asked Apodaca if there was something that caused him to confess now, the criminal complaint reveals he didn’t have an answer. Apodaca said no, he just realized what he did was evil.

Tobias Gutierrez

Tobias Gutierrez has been arrested in the Albuquerque New Mexico stabbing frenzy that left eleven people with injuries. According to court documents Tobias Gutierrez allegedly rode a BMX bike and started to stab random people. When it was all said and done eleven people suffered from injuries. Police In Albuquerque are not sure what set off the stabbing spree that lasted for a few hours on February 13, 2021. Tobias Gutierrez who has a previous record has been charged with multiple counts of assault.

Tobias Gutierrez More News

Police in Albuquerque arrested a man suspected of stabbing 11 people as he rode a bicycle around the city over the weekend, leaving two victims critically injured, authorities said.

The suspect was identified as Tobias Gutierrez, a 42-year-old man with a criminal history that includes felony offenses that range from burglary to battery and possession of a controlled substance.

He was booked into jail on charges of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, police in New Mexico’s largest city said in a statement Monday. Booking documents said he was homeless.

The stabbings appeared to have been committed at random within hours along Central Avenue, one of the city’s main thoroughfares. One of the crime scenes included a homeless encampment and another was near a smoke shop where the suspect asked a victim for money and yelled obscenities before swinging a knife, according to a criminal complaint.

“There doesn’t seem to be any rhyme or reason” to the attacks, said police spokesman Gilbert Gallegos.

There was no immediate information on whether Gutierrez had a lawyer who could speak on his behalf.

New Mexico court records show Gutierrez also had been charged over the years with drug possession and driving while intoxicated.

In 2014, Gutierrez failed to appear in court for driving on a revoked license, records show. He responded to the court with a handwritten note saying that he was in federal custody in another county and that he was making an effort to better himself while incarcerated.

His federal prison sentence stemmed from a case in which he entered a tribal casino north of Albuquerque while carrying a revolver and ammunition.

Authorities said Gutierrez got into an altercation with a casino security officer, dropped the revolver, got into a vehicle and led police on a chase through a suburb until he crashed and was found hiding.

Records show he was released from federal custody in 2020.

Sunday’s attacks began around 11:15 a.m., when officers responded to a crime scene downtown and found a man suffering a laceration to his hand. About an hour later, another call came in about the stabbing outside the smoke shop near the University of New Mexico a couple miles away.

Police were called to two more stabbings along Central Avenue over the next two hours before another call came in at 2 p.m. about a man trying to stab people outside a convenience store. Arriving officers found two victims with neck wounds.

Within the next 20 minutes, two more calls came in — and the final one involved a victim stabbed outside of a restaurant along another busy street less than a mile away.

The witnesses identified a man on a bike armed with a large knife.

According to the criminal complaint, an officer saw a suspect who fit the description and saw him toss something into a trash can before the officer stopped the suspect. A search warrant was issued and a knife was found.

The victims were taken to different hospitals and while two suffered critical injuries, all of those hospitalized were in stable condition, police said. Some were treated for their injuries and released.

Anna Bella Dukes Teen Killer Allegedly Set Up Car Jacking Murder

Anna Bella Dukes

Anna Bella Dukes is an eighteen year old alleged teen killer who set up a meeting over Snapchat that led to murder. According to police reports Anna Bella Dukes set up a meeting with the victims brother at a remote location in the early hours. When the victim showed up with his brother the pair would be robbed and Elias Otero would be fatally shot by seventeen year old Adrian Avila. Now Anna Bella Dukes and Adrian Avila have been arrested and charged with first degree murder and armed robbery. Below is the police report of the murder:

“The suspects dragged the victim from his red Lexus and demanded cash, jewelry and a gun from him. They entered the Lexus and another vehicle, holding the victim at gunpoint and drove to the victim’s residence. The carjacking suspects ordered the victim to call his brother and have him bring money and a gun outside, or they would shoot and kill the victim.

When they arrived at the victim’s home on Timothy Ct. S.W., the victim’s brother, later identified as Elias Otero, came out of the house and threatened to shoot the suspects. At some point, Avila fired a gun at Otero, killing him in the street.

The original carjacking victim jumped out of the vehicle as the suspects fled the scene.”

Anna Bella Dukes More News

An Albuquerque teen pleaded not guilty Friday morning to kidnapping and murder. Police say 18-year-old Anna Bella Dukes lured a man into a robbery through social media last year.

APD believes Dukes, along with Adrian Avila and two other suspects held the victim at gunpoint demanding cash, jewelry, and a gun. They allegedly drove to his home and when they arrived, his brother, 24-year-old Elias Otero, came out of the house and threatened to shoot the suspects.

Police say Avila then show and killed Otero. Prosecutors are now asking a judge to keep her locked up until trial, saying Dukes went on the run for nearly a year before she was arrested. A different judge will have to make that determination.

Lloyd and Dixie Ortiz’s surviving daughters have been waiting more than eight years for justice for their murdered family, and they’re still not happy, even after seeing the convicted killer receive his sentence for three counts of first-degree murder.

Santa Fe District Court Judge Francis Mathew sentenced Nicholas Ortiz, 24, to a total of 25 years for killing Lloyd Ortiz, Dixie Ortiz and Steven Ortiz with a mattock – a large pickax – at their home north of Santa Fe in June 2011. Nicholas Ortiz, who is not related to the victims, but had stayed with their adult daughter next door for several months, was 16 at the time of the murders.

He will get credit for time he has served since his February 2015 arrest and will be required to serve 85% of his sentence. It’s possible he can get out of prison in his early 40s.

Nicholas Ortiz was convicted of three counts of first-degree murder, as well as aggravated burglary and conspiracy to commit aggravated burglary, in December 2016. He was initially tried in May 2016, but a mistrial was declared because the jury couldn’t reach a unanimous verdict on any counts.

His sentencing had been delayed because his previous attorney filed an appeal with the state Supreme Court over jury instructions. But the high court eventually denied the appeal.

At the sentencing hearing Monday, the Santa Fe District Attorney’s Office asked Mathew to sentence Ortiz to 25 years for each murder count and run the sentences consecutively for a total of 75 years. But Mathew decided to run all the sentences concurrently.

Before the killings, Nicholas had stayed with Cherie Ortiz-Rios, Lloyd and Dixie’s daughter, for several months and knew the victims. Ortiz-Rios had kicked him out of her house, where he had his own room, after he was found hiding in Lloyd and Dixie’s back yard.

Ortiz-Rios discovered the bodies on June 19, 2011, when she went over with a plate of enchiladas to celebrate Father’s Day.

In what investigators say was a burglary that went bad, Nicholas is believe to have knocked on the back door of the El Rancho house and bludgeoned Lloyd, 55, to death after he answered the door in the early morning hours. Prosecutors say he then went inside and killed Dixie, 53, with two skull-piercing blows as she lay sleeping in her bed, and finally killed Steven Ortiz, a 21-year-old disabled man the Ortizes adopted when he was a baby, after the two had a physical struggle in the kitchen.

Ortiz-Rios recalled the brutality of the murders and said she was angry about the sentence Mathew handed down.

“I just don’t understand what more a person would have to do in this state to get a life sentence,” Ortiz-Rios told the Journal after the hearing. “I’m still in shock that that was truly his sentence.”

Angela Ortiz, Lloyd and Dixie’s other adult daughter, also expressed anger at Mathew’s ruling.

“I’m just upset, and I don’t think it was fair,” she said. “I think my three beautiful family members deserved a lot more than this. There’s no way he’s (Nicholas Ortiz) going to be a better person in 25 years.”

According to evidence and testimony presented at both trials, Nicholas conspired with cousins Jose Roybal and Ashley Roybal to burglarize the Ortiz house that night, but only Nicholas went inside the house with the mattock. Nicholas was arrested after Ashley Roybal, who was 24 when the murders occurred, went to State Police and said Nicholas killed the Ortizes.

Ashley took a plea deal for her involvement, but Jose, 15 at the time, was never charged with any crimes.

Nicholas Ortiz addressed the court Monday and said he has changed a lot from the gang member he was at 16 to the father he is today.

He didn’t mention the killings or address the Ortizes or their family members, other than saying, “I did not do what I’m facing my life in prison for.”

Nicholas’ lawyer, Stephen Taylor, showed a video in court where several of Nicholas’ family members and friends spoke on his behalf. Taylor said he did this so they wouldn’t have to speak in court.

“The media has portrayed Nicholas to be a monster,” family friend Kelly Quintana said in the video. “He is far from what they portrayed him to be. He is amazing. He is a good, good man with a wonderful soul, and he deserved a second chance.”
