A 17-year-old, who pleaded guilty to the brutal gang-linked slaying of a 14-year-old Maryland girl last spring, has been sentenced to 50 years in prison.

Josue Fuentes-Ponce, who was 16 at the time of the killing, had pleaded guilty to first-degree murder, conspiracy to commit murder and participating in a gang.

Josue Fuentes-Ponce was one of four teens who authorities said drove Ariana Funes-Diaz to a wooded area in Riverdale, Maryland, in April and attacked her with a baseball bat and a machete. Her body was discovered near a creek a month later.

Police said the teens, who were members of the MS-13 street gang, were worried Funes-Diaz would rat them out for an earlier gang-related kidnapping and robbery in D.C.

Josue Fuentes-Ponce was formally sentenced to life in prison, but the judge suspended all but 50 years. In addition, he will be subjected to five years of supervised probation after his release.

One of the other teens charged in the slaying, 18-year-old Joel Escobar, pleaded guilty in November and is due to be sentenced Feb. 26.

Edwin Rios, 19, has pleaded not guilty and is set to go on trial in April.

Another defendant — also a 14-year-old girl — was initially charged as an adult, but her case was moved to the juvenile court system.

In a separate, earlier case, Fuentes-Ponce and Escobar were arrested in May 2018 on charges of attempted murder and attempted robbery, and were transferred to a state-run youth detention center. They were eventually released following the disposition of that case.

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement said both teens were in the country illegally, and local authorities failed to honor a detainer request to hold the teens. State and local authorities said they were following state guidance, which calls compliance with ICE detainers voluntary.

A 17-year old MS-13 gang member was sentenced to life in prison on Monday with all but 50 years suspended for his involvement in the murder of 14-year-old Ariana Funes-Diaz.

Josue Fuentes-Ponce had been charged with first-degree murder, involvement in committing murder while part of a criminal gang and conspiracy to commit murder in Funes-Diaz’s death in April.

Fuentes-Ponce and three others lured Funes-Diaz to a tunnel in Riverdale on April 18 where they then beat her to death with a machete and a baseball bat, police said.

In May, officials said the group believed Funes-Diaz was going to tell the police about a crime they had all committed the day before in Washington, D.C.

Co-defendant Joel Escobar, 18, entered a guilty plea on November 25, 2019, and is scheduled to be sentenced on February 26, 2020.

Edwin Rios, 19, is scheduled for trial beginning April 13, 2020.

The charges against the remaining co-defendant, who is 14, were handled in juvenile court.

Three Maryland teenagers have been charged as adults in the brutal slaying of a 14-year-old girl who police said may have planned to go to authorities about a crime she and the suspects committed last month

Josue Fuentes-Ponce, 16, of Bladensburg, Joel Escobar, 17, of Northeast Washington, D.C., and Cynthia Hernandez-Nucamendi, 14, of Lothian, are each charged with first-degree murder in the death of Ariana Funes-Diaz. Funes-Diaz’s body was found Wednesday in a creek in Riverdale, about eight miles northeast of Washington, D.C.

An autopsy conducted Thursday found that Funes-Diaz died of blunt force trauma, according to officials with the Prince George’s County Police Department.

Funes-Diaz was reported missing from Anne Arundel County on or around April 18, along with Hernandez. The two girls were considered “critical missing juveniles.”

Anne Arundel County authorities said the teens were seen in the Washington, D.C., after they were reported missing and were believed to be in D.C. or Prince George’s County.

Maj. Brian Reilly, commander of Prince George’s County’s Criminal Investigations Division, said Thursday during a news conference that the department’s gang unit got a tip Monday about a possible murder back in April in which the victim was dumped in a wooded area of Riverdale. Investigators from Prince George’s County, along with agents from the FBI and the U.S. Attorney’s Office, searched the woods in the 6300 block of 64th Avenue.

“We ultimately found our murder victim there, in the creek,” Reilly said.

Nicholas Browning, the Baltimore County teen charged with murdering his parents and brothers in their sleep, joked about killing his parents several times before their deaths, several students said.

“He often complained about his father, and I specifically remember him saying he would kill his family one day in a joking manner,” Browning?s Dulaney High classmate John Lockwood told The Examiner in an Internet message.

Lockwood?s statement appears to corroborate previous statements from students who rode the school bus with Nicholas Browning and said the teen recently began talking about killing his parents — but none of them took him seriously.

“He talked about how rich his father was, how he wanted some of that money,” said one middle schooler, whose father asked The Examiner not to publish her name. “He didn?t like his father because he used to always yell at him and stuff.”

Lockwood said Browning had “another side to him away from school where he would beat up his younger brothers really badly, steal from his dad?s liquor cabinet, and steal their car without a permit or license.”

He said Nicholas Browning was “a spoiled kid” who mocked minorities and people with disabilities.

“He got away with everything and thought he ran the world,” Lockwood said.

Called an “all-American family,” successful lawyer, John Browning, 45, along with his wife, Tamara, 44, and sons Gregory, 14, and Benjamin, 11, were found dead in their Cockeysville home last Saturday around 5 p.m. by Nicholas Browning as he returned home from a friend?s house, police said.

Police said Browning, an honors student close to becoming an Eagle Scout, dumped his father?s gun in nearby bushes and spent Friday night and all day Saturday with friends.

A source with knowledge of Browning actions that night said John Browning had wanted his eldest son to accompany the family to western Maryland Saturday, but Nicholas wanted to stay home and party with his friends. The night of the killings, Nicholas abruptly left a friend?s house and walked more than two miles to his parents? home, returning five hours later, the source said.

Browning then began inviting friends to a party at his house on Saturday night, before returning home and faking surprise at finding their dead bodies, several sources, including police, said.

As police worked the crime scene that Saturday night, officers were repeatedly interrupted as students, unaware of the horror inside the home, kept arriving expecting a party, law enforcement sources said.

Browning did not immediately confess to the crime, but claimed a botched robbery led to the murders, sources said. After about six hours of interrogation, he admitted to the murders after police found inconsistencies in his story, the sources said.

Browning marked his 16th birthday behind bars in the Baltimore County Detention Center Saturday, the same day about 1,300 people attended a funeral for his family at Trinity Assembly of God church in Lutherville.

In a statement released after the funereal, family members expressed support for Nicholas Browning.

“Our concern and love goes out to Nick,” they wrote. “Whatever else lies ahead, he is a member of our family and he will have our support.

A Baltimore County judge on Friday denied Nicholas Browning’s motion to reduce the four life sentences he received for murdering his parents and two younger brothers at their Cockeysville home.

Browning, now 21, was sentenced five years ago after pleading guilty to four counts of first-degree murder. His attorneys have recently argued that his multiple life sentences were preventing him from getting mental healthtreatment at the Patuxent Institution, which works with youth offenders.

But Judge Thomas J. Bollinger Sr. said he did not believe that the sentence modification would change the circumstances of his incarceration. Browning had asked that he be able to serve all of the terms at the same time, with all but 30 years suspended.

Browning’s attorney, Joshua Treem, argued that reducing several of the murder counts “doesn’t get him out any earlier” but would make him eligible for treatment. He said Browning still could not be released without the approval of a parole board.

“Nicholas Browning committed what I don’t think words can adequately describe as an unfathomable act,” Treem said. But Treem said mental health professionals who evaluated Browning had recommended treatment, which could potentially help answer the question of why Browning killed his family members.

Browning, who appeared in court with short, cropped hair in a light blue “D.O.C.” shirt and lose-fitting jeans, spoke only briefly, thanking family members who have continued to visit him.

“Words can’t describe what I did,” he said. Browning asked the judge to reconsider the sentence “not for me but my family.”

Deputy State’s Attorney Robin Coffin said Browning’s sentence was appropriate because he showed no empathy in the killing of his family.

“It was the state’s position at the time of sentencing and the state’s position today this crime was so heinous that Nicholas Browning should never get out of jail.”

She added, “At the time of the murder, when he was speaking with detectives, the only thing he said about his parents was that they were harsh and strict.”

Browning shot and killed his father, John, his mother, Tamara, his 14-year-old brother, Gregory, and his 11-year-old brother, Benjamin. Later, Browning told police, he tossed his father’s gun into nearby woods and went to a friend’s house, where he played video games.

Calling it “one of the most difficult decisions that this court has ever had to make,” a Howard County judge on Wednesday sentenced a teenager who plotted her father’s murder to 30 years in prison.

In sentencing 17-year-old Morgan Lane Arnold, Circuit Judge William Tucker said he had to balance the teen’s age and history of mental problems with evidence that she spent months planning the murder of her father, 58-year old Dennis Lane, and that she manipulated her boyfriend into fatally stabbing him.

“This was a well-thought-out plan,” Tucker said in a courtroom filled with family and friends of the father and daughter. “It’s clear that she was the main culprit.”

Lane was stabbed to death in his Ellicott City home in May 2013. Arnold’s boyfriend at the time, Jason Bulmer, now 22, pleaded guilty in 2014 to killing Lane and received a 30-year sentence.

Lane was a well-known businessman in Howard County who wrote a popular blog and co-hosted a podcast. His friends and family described him as a gregarious man who was devoted to his daughter.

The murder shocked the county, and Tucker said he remembered exactly where he was when the news came out — at a judicial conference on the Eastern Shore. Other officials from Howard County also were there, he recalled.

“Every single one said, ‘Did you hear about Dennis Lane?’” he said.

Tucker gave Arnold a life sentence, suspending all but 30 years. He said he would recommend that she stay at the Patuxent Institution in Jessup. The maximum security prison provides specialized treatment with the help of psychology, social work and other professionals.

County prosecutors sought life imprisonment for Arnold, who was charged as an adult and pleaded guilty in May to first-degree murder.

The prosecution pointed to months of planning. They said Arnold left a door unlocked at the home so Bulmer could sneak in to commit the murder — and that she also wanted him to kill Lane’s girlfriend, Denise Geiger.

Both Arnold and Bulmer were social misfits at Mount Hebron High, according to testimony from witnesses. Their relationship was highlighted throughout court proceedings.

One of Lane’s sisters told the judge Wednesday that her brother had tried to “put the kibosh” on the teenage romance because Bulmer was so much older than Arnold.

“Morgan is smart — smart and cunning,” Kelly Lane said during tearful testimony as she read from a written statement. “Smart and manipulative. She’s not happy unless she is the center of attention and getting her way.”

She suggested it was Arnold that had manipulated Bulmer.

“Jason Bulmer was her first victim,” Kelly Lane said. “His life is ruined.”

Throughout the case, the defense suggested that Arnold feared Bulmer. But Tucker said he read thousands of the couple’s text messages that were entered as evidence, and did not believe that.

“It was Morgan Arnold that was the one that manipulated” Bulmer, the judge said.

Testifying Wednesday, Arnold’s mother, Cindi Arnold, said she noticed a great change in her daughter after she began dating Bulmer. The girl became interested in horror stories and started dressing in black clothing, she said.

Morgan Arnold’s mental and developmental history was a focus of the case. She has been diagnosed with anxiety, depression, schizoaffective disorder, attention-deficit disorder and Asperger’s syndrome, according to testimony.

Cindi Arnold told Tucker that her daughter had no history of violence — and said she needs treatment, not incarceration.

“She would carry a mosquito outside rather than kill it,” she said. “That’s the Morgan that I know.”

Cindi Arnold and Dennis Lane, who were never married, shared custody of Arnold and often disagreed on how to raise her, according to testimony.

Defense attorney Joe Murtha argued that Arnold should serve a sentence similar to Bulmer. He urged Tucker to take her young age into consideration — she was 14 at the time of the murder — and said she was “significantly impaired.”

Morgan Arnold, who wore a black dress and gray sweater, declined to address the court before she was sentenced.

“She told me she might pass out because she was feeling so anxious,” Murtha said.

After the hearing, Murtha said he was “relieved for Morgan Arnold that she won’t be incarcerated for the rest of her life.”

“There’s a long way to go, and she needs help,” he said outside the courthouse in Ellicott City. “I don’t think she appreciates the gravity of what happened, nor the consequences of her actions, but with help, she will in the future.”

Cindi Arnold declined to comment after the sentencing. So did Geiger and members of Lane’s family.

“It was a tough case,” said prosecutor Doug Nelsen.

“It was a case where there are no winners,” added prosecutor Danielle Duclaux.

Sentencing an Ellicott City teen who plotted her father’s murder was one of the hardest decisions a Howard County judge said he’s had to make.

On Wednesday, 17-year-old Morgan Lane Arnold was sentenced to life in prison for first-degree murder, the state’s attorney’s office reported; her entire sentence was suspended, except for 30 years.

Howard County Circuit Court Judge William V. Tucker said that her sentencing was “one of the most difficult decisions the court has ever had to make,” according to the report. The ruling came after nine hours of hearings that included victim impact statements and testimony from doctors who could not agree on Lane’s mental prognosis.

Arnold pleaded guilty in the murder of her father Dennis Lane, a blogger and commercial real estate broker who was stabbed to death in his Ellicott City home on May 10, 2013.

Lane penned the blog “Tales of Two Cities,” chronicling Ellicott City (where he lived) and Columbia (where he grew up in Bryant Woods).

Police said Arnold, at age 14, and her then boyfriend, Jason Bulmer, who was 19 at the time, plotted for more than two months to kill Lane and his fiancée.

Arnold “thought her father was the bane of her existence,” Tucker said.

Both Arnold and Bulmer have been incarcerated since the crime occurred.

Bulmer was sentenced to 30 years in July 2014, and he said that Arnold told him to kill her father, supported by messages the couple exchanged between January and May.

Judge Tucker reportedly read more than 2,000 pages of their messages, including plans that led up to Lane’s murder at 4:20 a.m. on May 10, 2013.

“It was Morgan Arnold who made this happen,” Tucker reportedly said in court. “It was Morgan Arnold who manipulated Mr. Bulmer.”

Arnold allegedly asked Bulmer to kill Lane’s fiancee, Denise Geiger, as well. Geiger, who was in the home at the time, called 911.

During the two days of testimony preceding Wednesday’s sentencing, the court heard victim impact statements from Geiger and Dennis Lane’s sisters, according to a report from the state’s attorney.

When Arnold is released, she is to be on probation for five years, including no contact with Geiger, Geiger’s daughter, the Lane family and Bulmer.

Before sentencing, there was also testimony from mental and behavioral specialists, who could not reach consensus on Arnold’s mental and emotional conditions. In a previously court-commissioned study of Arnold’s mental health, five experts gave five different diagnoses, from Asperger’s to ADHD to depression.

Said Judge Tucker: “As she gets older, it is my hope that she appreciates what she has lost…”
