Two children were shot to death after a hostage situation in Mississippi on Monday.

Police say they arrived at a residence at 325 Coldwater River Road in Jonestown, Mississippi around 2 a.m. and located a 25-year-old Marquez Griffin, who was holding a child at gunpoint.

Deputies were eventually able to get that child to safety after negotiating with Griffin.

Coahoma County sheriff deputies say they located a 9-year-old boy and a 1-year-old girl, Averi Jones, both suffering from gunshot wounds at the residence.

The boy was pronounced dead at the scene while the baby girl later died at a hospital in Clarksdale.

“All I know is my grandbaby Averi Jones is gone and I just want everyone to know that Averi Baby was a sweet baby. She didn’t deserve this. She didn’t deserve this. She didn’t deserve this at all,” Melrose Haile said.

Haile is the grandmother of the one-year-old who was killed at the Summit Garden Apartments.

“Her mom told me she was asleep and he put a pillow over her head and shot her in her head,” Haile said.

According to Haile, there were several children at the apartment when the shootings happened. Haile says to her knowledge, Griffin is a friend of Jones’ mother.

“She told me they were friends and how could a friend do this to you?” Haile said.

At this time, investigators do not have a motive for the killings. They said Griffin had recently moved back to Jonestown from Austin, Texas.

Griffin has been charged with two counts of murder and two counts of aggravated assault.

Jonestown is about 65 miles south of Memphis.

A 25-year-old man in Mississippi has been arrested for allegedly shooting and killing two young children, then holding a third child at gunpoint. Marquez Griffin was taken into custody on Monday following a standoff with sheriff’s deputies and charged with two counts of murder and two count of aggravated assault in the deaths of the two kids, identified as a 1-year-old girl and a 9-year-old boy, authorities announced.

According to a press release from the Coahoma County Sheriff’s Office, an individual at approximately 2 a.m. on Monday called 911 and reported that a child had just been shot at the Summit Garden Apartments, a housing complex located in the 300 block of Coldwater River Road in Jonestown.

An off-duty sheriff’s deputy residing in Jonestown overheard the call for deputies go out over the radio and “immediately” responded to the scene, the office said. Upon arriving at the address, the off-duty deputy met up with several on-duty deputies, and the group made contact with the suspect, later identified as Griffin.

Deputies say that when they initially made contact with Griffin, he was “holding a child at gunpoint.”

Thankfully, deputies “were able to talk the subject into dropping his weapon and get the child to safety” before detaining Griffin and placing him under arrest. However, after taking Griffin into custody, authorities searched the residence and discovered the two young children, both of whom had sustained gunshot wounds prior to the arrival of law enforcement.

One of the victims was pronounced dead on the scene while the other victim was rushed to an emergency room at a nearby hospital. Unfortunately, the young victim was pronounced dead shortly after arriving at the medical facility.

While authorities did not release any information about the victims other than their ages, it was the 1-year-old girl, who was identified by her family as Averi Jones, who was pronounced dead after being transported to the hospital, according to a report from Memphis, Tennessee CBS affiliate WREG-TV.

Deputies transported Marquez Griffin to the Coahoma County Adult Detention Center where he currently remains in holding.

According to authorities, Griffin was originally from the Coahoma County area. He had been living in the Arlington, Texas area for some time and only recently moved back to Mississippi.

Investigators have not released any information regarding a possible motive for the alleged murders.

Averi’s grandmother, Melrose Hailereportedly spoke to WREG about her tragic loss and provided additional allegations about the child’s death

“All I know is my grandbaby Averi Jones is gone and I just want everyone to know that Averi Baby was a sweet baby. She didn’t deserve this. She didn’t deserve this. She didn’t deserve this at all,” Melrose Haile told the station. “Her mom told me she was asleep and he put a pillow over her head and shot her in her head.”

Haile also reportedly said that Marquez Griffin was friends with Averi’s mother and noted that there were several other children in the home at the time of the shooting.

“She told me they were friends and how could a friend do this to you?” Haile reportedly added.

Thomas Loden Execution Scheduled For Tonight

Thomas Loden Mississippi Execution

The State of Mississippi is preparing to execute Thomas Loden tonight at 6:00pm local time. In 2001 Thomas Loden would plead guilty to the kidnapping, sexual assault and murder of sixteen year old Leesa Marie Gray. According to court reports Leesa Marie Gray was sexually assaulted for hours before she was murdered. Thomas Loden has had his execution delayed for several years due to the method of execution in Mississippi which is lethal injection. However even though Thomas Loden is suing the State over the lethal injection protocol the Supreme Court ruled that the execution can go forward.

Thomas Loden Execution More News

Mississippi is set to execute a man Wednesday by lethal injection — the first since November 2021.

Thomas Loden Jr. is scheduled to be put to death at 6 p.m. at the Mississippi State Penitentiary in Parchman. Loden pleaded guilty in 2001 to capital murder, rape and four counts of sexual battery for kidnapping and murdering 16-year-old Leesa Gray.

Gray, a waitress, was stranded with a flat tire on the side of an Itawamba County road in June 2000 when Loden pulled the 16-year-old into his van. Loden spent hours raping and sexually assaulting the teenager before suffocating and strangling her to death. He videotaped most of the crime.

Death penalty opponents held a news conference Tuesday outside the Mississippi Capitol to call on Gov. Tate Reeves to grant mercy for 58-year-old Loden. The group said Loden served honorably as a U.S. Marine for 18 years, including combat in Operation Desert Storm.

“Clearly, something in him snapped for him to commit such a horrific crime,” said Mitzi Magleby, a spokesperson for the Mississippi chapter of Ignite Justice. “Mr. Loden was immediately remorseful. When arrested soon after the crime, he had carved the words ‘I’m sorry’ into his chest. Shouldn’t there be room for grace and mercy in such a situation?”

Sheila O’Flaherty, with Mississippians Educating for Smart Justice, is hoping to change the minds of the people in Jackson who support the death penalty.

“Some people do change their minds when they realize how unfair it is, or when they realize that they may be intentionally executing innocent people. I’m not talking about this particular case, or anything and I’m not diminishing the suffering of victims in any way, but people’s minds can be changed.”

Gray’s mother, Wanda Farris, told the Associated Press that she plans to witness Loden’s execution. Farris said her daughter was a happy girl who loved life.

Thomas Loden Execution December 14 2022

Mississippi authorities released details Wednesday about the last wishes of an inmate who was executed for the 2000 rape and slaying of a 16-year-old girl.

Thomas Loden, 58, was condemned to die by lethal injection at the Mississippi State Penitentiary at Parchman. He had been on death row since 2001, when he pleaded guilty to capital murder, rape and four counts of sexual battery against Leesa Marie Gray.

He was pronounced dead at 6:12 p.m. Loden wore a red prison jumpsuit and was covered by a white sheet during the execution. Brown leather straps held him down on a gurney.

Before the injection started, Loden said he was “deeply remorseful.”

“For the past 20 years, I’ve tried to do a good deed every single day to make up for the life I took from this world,” he said. “If today brings you nothing else, I hope you get peace and closure.”

His last meal included two bone-in fried pork chops, fried okra, a baked sweet potato with butter, Pillsbury Grands biscuits with butter and molasses, peach cobbler with French vanilla ice cream and Lipton sweet tea, the Mississippi Department of Corrections told Fox News Digital.

“He has a full belly because he ate a lot,” MDOC Commissioner Nathan “Burl” Cain, said at a Wednesday news conference. “He liked the okra, he liked the pork chops… I believe he ate every bit of it.”

The meal was served at about 4 p.m., authorities said. Loden requested to see four visitors and a mental health official and was “up and in goods spirits,” Cain said.

“He has expressed some remorse,” Deputy Commissioner of Institutions Jeworski Mallett said. “We spoke with him at 12:45 p.m. and he was remorseful to the family.”

A federal judge last week declined to block Mississippi from carrying out the execution amid a pending lawsuit from Loden and four Mississippi death row inmates over the state’s lethal injection protocol.

During the summer ahead of what should have been Gray’s senior year of high school, she had worked as a waitress at her uncle’s restaurant in northeast Mississippi. On June 22, 2000, she left work after dark and became stranded with a flat tire on a rural road.

Loden, a Marine Corps recruiter with relatives in the area, encountered Gray on the road at about 10:45 p.m. He stopped and began speaking with the teenager about the flat tire. “Don’t worry. I’m a Marine. We do this kind of stuff,” he said.

Loden told investigators he became angry after Gray allegedly said she would never want to be a Marine, and that he ordered her into his van. He spent four hours sexually assaulting her before strangling and suffocating her, according to an interview he gave investigators.

Jacob Scott More News

A man who allegedly faked his own death in 2018 to avoid rape charges in Jackson County has been handed his sentence.

Jacob Blair Scott has been on trial this week facing 14 counts of child sex crimes involving a 14-year-old girl he eventually impregnated. Today, a jury found him guilty on all 14 counts. He has been sentenced to 85 years in prison without the possibility of parole.

Getting Scott to trial has been a long, winding road. In 2018, just days before he was set to plead guilty, Scott vanished. Authorities say Scott – who previously went by the alias Lucas Marty Walding – tried to make it look like he committed suicide

On July 30, 2018, investigators found his abandoned dinghy floating off the coast of Orange Beach, Ala. They searched it and found a gun and suicide note with contact information for Scott’s family, according to U.S. Marshals.

Only a very small amount of blood was found in the dinghy and investigators said no evidence indicated it was a true suicide.

Later, authorities learned that Scott – a military veteran who once received a Purple Heart – had withdrawn $45,000 from a bank account before he disappeared.

The indictment filed Jan. 26 in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Alabama, lists three charges against Scott for crimes alleged during his time on the Alabama coast. Those charges are false communications of a distress, illegal shipment and transportation of a firearm by a person under indictment, and false information and hoaxes.

Count one accuses Scott of knowingly communicating a false distress message to the U.S. Coast Guard, causing them to attempt to save lives and property when no help was needed.

The second count alleges that Scott “did willfully ship and transport in interstate commerce a firearm…” The gun in question is a Ruger .380 caliber firearm.

The third count says Scott gave “false and misleading information regarding the use of a firearm to commit a suicide on a small boat in the Gulf of Mexico within a mile of the shoreline of Orange Beach, Alabama, under circumstances where such information may reasonably have been believed, that indicated that an activity had taken place, was taking, or would take place, that is the transportation of a firearm in interstate commerce by a person under indictment for a felony offense.

Eighteen months later, Scott was arrested just hours after the U.S. Marshals sent out a national release naming him to their Top 15 Most Wanted List, describing Scott as a survivalist and military veteran with the knowledge to live off the grid. Later that night, his case was featured on the true crime show “In Pursuit With John Walsh.”

A tip was called in to investigators that same day claiming that Scott was living in a RV in Pushmataha County, Oklahoma, and going by the name Luke. Authorities were able to verify it was Scott and say it had been living there since disappearing from Orange Beach

Not long after, he was extradited back to South Mississippi, and locked up at the Jackson County Adult Detention Center. His current trial on the sexual assault charges had to be moved multiple times over the last two years due to COVID.

On Thursday, May 12, Pearl police said they were made aware of a woman who had “repeatedly and forcibly” thrown a baby on the road around 2:00 p.m. on North Bierdeman Road.

When officers arrived, they said another woman was holding the severely injured child. Emergency crews began first aid immediately. The girl was taken to Children’s Hospital of Mississippi in Jackson where she was listed in critical condition.

Police said the child’s mother, Makaylia Jolley, 20, ran into nearby woods when officers had arrived to the scene. She was arrested shortly afterwards.

A 20-year-old woman is in custody accused of repeatedly throwing her 9-week-old daughter to the ground before running into the woods when officers arrived.

Makaylia Shaylynn Jolley, of Pearl, is being held on charges of attempted murder and felony child abuse, but Rankin County and City of Pearl officials expect the charges to be upgraded to capital murder, news outlets reported.

Pearl Police Chief Dean Scott said the baby, as of Saturday, was still in critical condition at the Children’s Hospital of Mississippi, but her outlook was bleak.

“At this point, as small as she is, they’re trying to keep her comfortable and painless,” he said. “It’s just a matter of time, according to medical staff, at this point. Her injuries are too severe to attempt to treat.”

Scott said the baby is currently unresponsive and on a ventilator.

Madison/Rankin County District Attorney Bubba Bramlett said if the child dies, the woman would face a capital murder charge and his office would seek the death penalty.

The infant’s older brother is now living with his grandmother.

According to police, several 9-1-1 calls came in around 2 p.m. on Thursday, saying a woman had “repeatedly and forcibly” thrown her baby on the road. When officers arrived, they found a different woman holding a severely injured child.

The fire department and an ambulance arrived and began first aid on the infant, who was transported to Children’s.

Scott said the officers involved have been unable to sleep since the incident.

“This act was very deliberate and intentional,” Scott said. The mother, he added, “showed no remorse.”
