A man who was accused of murdering his own father in Gaston County was recently released from prison on parole, records showed.

Gaston County police said a person was killed in a trailer park on New Moon Lane, between Bessemer City and Kings Mountain, on Tuesday, Aug. 12. According to family, that person was 74-year-old Steve Hughes.

Soon after the Tuesday morning homicide, police said 41-year-old Derek Steven Hughes was arrested in Kings Mountain. He was subsequently charged with first-degree murder and was taken to the Gaston County jail.

The victim’s family said Derek Hughes is Steve’s son. Police have not said what led up to Steve being killed, but the family believes the father and son were arguing about money

Police did not say how Steve was killed, only that he was the victim of an assault.

”I’m getting justice for my father,” the victim’s daughter said Tuesday. “I’ll go to the end of the earth to get justice for him.”

Steve’s daughter said her father loved to work on cars, camp and fish, and that he was “the best man you could ever meet.

Just days before he allegedly killed his own father, North Carolina prison records showed that Derek Hughes was released on parole.

Records indicated that the 41-year-old was serving time for drug charges before he was released on Aug. 6 — just six days before Steve Hughes was killed.

The recent prison sentence was not Hughes’ first time being behind bars. Records showed he served time in previous prison stints for charges that include assault on a female, assault by strangulation, communicating threats and other offenses.

Following Tuesday’s arrest, Hughes was denied bond and remained in Gaston County custody. He was scheduled to appear in court on Wednesday afternoon.
