The Rankin County Sheriff’s Office said they have arrested and charged a 14-year-old with murder and attempted murder in connection to a deadly domestic incident in the Farmington Station Subdivision.
According to Sheriff Bryan Bailey, deputies received a call Tuesday around 5:07 p.m. about a shooting that occurred on Ashton Way in Brandon.
Bailey said when his deputies arrived at the scene, they met with the stepfather of the teen. Bailey said the stepfather was suffering from a gunshot wound to the shoulder.
The stepfather stated that he arrived home and found his wife, 40-year-old Ashley Smylie, deceased from an apparent gunshot wound inside the residence, and his 14-year-old stepdaughter armed with a pistol.
The victim stated that the suspect shot at him and struck him in the shoulder. The victim engaged the suspect physically and took the weapon from her. The victim stated that the suspect ran to the backyard and jumped over a fence and fled.
Additional deputies responded to the area along with the Mississippi Highway Patrol’s helicopter. At about 5:35 p.m., Rankin County deputies found the teen suspect not far from the residence and took her into custody without incident.
Based on the circumstances and evidence at the scene, the teenager was placed under arrest for murder and attempted murder, Bailey said. She was taken to the Rankin County Juvenile Detention Center, where she will be held at least until she appears in court.
According to the Rankin County School District, Smylie was a math teacher at Northwest Rankin High School, where her daughter was also a student.

A teen is in custody after allegedly killing her mother, who was a teacher in Rankin County, and injuring her stepdad.
According to authorities, the Rankin County Sheriff’s Office received a call at 5:07 p.m. on Tuesday about a shooting in the 200 block of Ashton Way.
Several Rankin County Deputies, the Reservoir Fire Department, and the Pafford Ambulance Service responded to the scene.
Once authorities arrived, they found the male owner of the home with a gunshot wound to the shoulder.
He told deputies that when he arrived home, he found his wife, 40-year-old Ashley Smylie, dead from a gunshot wound and his 14-year-old stepdaughter armed with a pistol.
The man told deputies that after his stepdaughter shot him, he fought her and took the weapon from her.
According to the man, the 14-year-old then ran to the backyard, jumped over a fence, and ran away.
Additional deputies and the MS Highway Patrol’s helicopter responded to the area and found the teen girl not far from the residence.
Based on the circumstances and evidence at the scene, the teen was placed under arrest for murder and attempted murder.
She was taken to the Rankin County Juvenile Detention Center. She will appear before Rankin County Court Judge Kent McDaniel Wednesday morning.
Rankin County School officials confirmed that Smylie was a teacher at Northwest Rankin High School and her daughter was a student.
Rankin County Coroner David Ruth says Smylie will be taken to the State Medical Examiner’s office for further investigation as to the cause and manner of death.

A 14-year-old girl is facing adult charges of murder and attempted murder in connection with a shooting that killed her mother and injured her stepfather.
According to Rankin County Sheriff Bryan Bailey, the teenager, Carly Madison Gregg, appeared in juvenile court Wednesday, where a judge certified her as an adult. Gregg will make an initial appearance Thursday in county court.
