A Jeffersonville man is dead, and a family member is charged with murder after a gruesome discovery led to a police standoff Friday.
Investigators say it started as a welfare check just before 10 a.m. on Summerlin Place. Instead, officers found a headless body at the home.
“It’s just unreal. This is unbelievable,” said one neighbor.
Police say the case quickly led them about a mile away to Callaway Drive, where they found a severed head inside another house.
The suspect, identified as Bryce Winnecke, was armed and refused to come out at first.
“We immediately set up a perimeter. And after about a four-hour standoff, we were able to have him come outside, detained and taken without incident,” said Capt. Sam Moss.
Neighbors say the crime has shaken what’s normally a quiet, close-knit neighborhood.
“It’s shocking because this is a safe neighborhood,” said Randi Snider.
Jeffersonville Police Chief Kenny Kavanaugh said his thoughts are with the victim’s family.
“We have a family. A family that was, in fact, that was affected as a result of this here. So let’s think about the family amongst us in our community,” Kavanaugh said.
As investigators continue searching two homes for answers, neighbors say the tragedy is a painful reminder that heartbreak can happen anywhere.
“When families have issues, it can hit anywhere. Just anywhere. So it’s sad,” Snider said.

Bryce Winnecke is in custody following the SWAT standoff that started with police finding a headless body in Jeffersonville.
The incident originated with a call for a welfare check in the 1700 block of Summerlin Place at around 9:56 a.m. on Friday morning. Upon arriving at the home, officers discovered a crime scene that they described as a “very apparent homicide.”
Evidence at the scene led officers to a home in the 3000 block of Callaway Drive at around 10:16 a.m., where they located a person of interest, later identified as 33-year-old Bryce Winnecke, outside the home and armed. Winnecke then barricaded himself in the home.
After Winnecke refused to exit the home, tactical and SWAT teams were called to aid in the de-escalation process.
Police said contact was made with Winnecke in the home through a phone call. When asked to exit the home, he said he was not ready yet and said he would exit at a later, specific time.
Officers did not agree to this demand and continued the de-escalation process with the use of flashbangs.
After approximately four hours, Winnecke exited the home and was taken into custody without incident.
