A Pasco County teacher was arrested on a murder charge Sunday night in connection with the death of her 6-year-old son, according to the Pasco County Sheriff’s Office.
Justine Mroz, 40, reported her son Elliot Perez’s death shortly before 10 a.m. Sunday, according to the sheriff’s office. Deputies responded to a home in the area of Drexel Road in Land O’ Lakes and arrested Mroz on a second-degree murder charge.
The sheriff’s office has not released any other information. An arrest affidavit was not immediately available Monday.
Mroz is a teacher for Pasco County Schools, a spokesperson confirmed in a statement released in response to questions from the Tampa Bay Times.
Mroz “will not be on any school campus,” the statement said. “In accordance with Pasco County Schools policy and employee privacy laws, no additional information will be provided at this time. On behalf of the entire Pasco County Schools family, we extend our deepest condolences to all who are grieving. We are deploying crisis teams to provide care and support to those affected by this heartbreaking event.”
According to the school district’s 2024-2025 employee directory, Mroz joined the district in 2016 and is a graduation enhancement teacher at the West Pasco Education Academy in Hudson. The school offers “middle school and high school recovery programs with a focus of promoting and graduating on time,” according to its website.
A district spokesperson provided an update later Monday stating that Mroz is “an itinerant assigned to multiple locations providing (exceptional education) services,” and she is expected to be suspended without pay at Tuesday’s school board meeting.
State records show Mroz has an active teaching certificate for exceptional education.
Mroz has owned a home in the 6000 block of Drexel Road since 2018, according to property records.
