Mason And Brooklyn Grimes News
Two people are facing multiple charges in the death of an infant in Blount County.
Around 3:15 p.m. Wednesday, 36-year-old Mason Grimes and 31-year-old Brooklyn Grimes, both of Horton, were booked into the Blount County Jail, according to the Blount County Sheriff’s Office.
The pair was charged with capital murder of a child under the age of 15, felony murder and aggravated child abuse.
Court documents filed Wednesday evening identify Mason Grimes as the child’s foster father.
Those documents state that on Aug. 5, 2022, the child, then 3 months old, was placed into Grimes custody where they “remained and flourished” for about a year.
Then, on Sep. 25, 2023, the child was diagnosed with “multiple congenital disorders,’ at Children’s of Alabama where a follow-up appointment was scheduled for Oct. 20. However, Grimes did not take the child back and the hospital’s phone calls were not returned.
A month later, the child was taken to St. Vincent’s in Blount County because they had stopped breathing. Upon arrival, medical staff found them to be “severely emaciated, asystolic and cool to the touch.”
Since their September appointment at Children’s, the child had reportedly lost one-third of their body weight and no evidence of them ever receiving further medical care was found.
Deputies are planning to release more information during a press conference scheduled for Thursday afternoon.
