A 22-year-old father in California is behind bars this week after his 1-year-old daughter was found dead in the Los Angeles River. Jayveyon Burley was taken into custody on Tuesday and charged with one count of murder and one count of child endangerment in the death of Leilani Dream Burleyrecords reviewed by Law&Crime show.

According to a report from Los Angeles ABC affiliate KABC-TV, a woman later identified as Burley’s mother on Sunday evening called 911 at approximately 10:45 p.m. to report a possible missing child. She reportedly told the emergency dispatcher that the father, Burley, went to Long Beach to pick up his two children from their mother and bring them to the residence he shared with his mother in Inglewood. When he arrived home, however, he was reportedly only accompanied by one child

Officers with the Inglewood Police Department (IPD) responded to the residence, located in the 300 block of N. Market Street where they made contact with the victim’s grandmother and began searching for the missing child.

The IPD, working alongside officers with the Long Beach Police Department, discovered the little girl’s remains in the area shallow water just below the Ocean Boulevard Bridge in the LA River, according to a report from San Diego Fox affiliate KSWB-TV.

While authorities have not released details regarding the manner in which they believe Burley killed his daughter, Lynisha Hull, the child’s mother, provided additional information about the circumstances of Leilani’s death in an interview with KABC. Hull said that Burley appeared upset when he picked up their children, but that his behavior wasn’t anything she found concerning.

“He came to my home to pick up my kids,” an emotional Hull said through tears. “He was angry at the time but normal though. He was normal. He didn’t look like he was panicked or anything at all.”

She reportedly said that Jayveon Burley failed to put the 1-year-old in her carseat when loading the kids into the car. Hull reportedly said she then strapped the child into her carseat and watched as Burley drove off “erratically,” stopping and starting the vehicle several times.

Hull further claimed that her daughter’s body was found in the LA River because Burley tossed her off of a bridge.

“My daughter was murdered by her father. He threw her off the bridge,” Hull told the station. “I don’t understand. Why would he do this to my daughter? I don’t understand. How can a father do this to their own child?”

Hull’s 3-year-old son was unharmed. The distraught mother reportedly said that the little boy keeps asking where his sister is, a question she said she has no answer for.

Inglewood PD urged anyone with information relevant to the case to contact investigators at 310-412-5246.

Burley is no stranger to run-ins with the law. He was arrested in 2018 after he and two accomplices allegedly robbed a Domino’s Pizza delivery driver at gunpoint, according to a report from the Daily Press.

Michael Avenatti Gets 14 Years For Stealing Millions

Michael Avenatti

Former celebrity lawyer Michael Avenatti has been sentenced to fourteen years in prison and ordered to pay $11,000,000 to clients he stole from. According to court documents Michael Avenatti would plead guilty to four counts of wire fraud for each client he stole from and one count of endeavoring to obstruct the administration of the Internal Revenue Code. Now the former lawyer is going to spend up to the next fourteen years in Federal Prison. Of course Michael Avenatti is already in prison as he was convicted of trying to extort Nike and stealing money from Stormy Daniels who was given a book advance regarding her relationship with former President Donald Trump.

Disgraced attorney Michael Avenatti was sentenced Monday to 14 years in prison and ordered to pay nearly $11 million in restitution for embezzling millions of dollars from four of his clients and obstruction.

Avenatti pleaded guilty earlier this year to four counts of wire fraud for each client he stole from and one count of endeavoring to obstruct the administration of the Internal Revenue Code. Prosecutors said he obstructed the IRS’ effort to collect $5 million in unpaid payroll taxes for Tully’s Coffee.

The sentence handed down by federal district Judge James Selna will begin after Avenatti completes a five-year prison term he’s currently serving after being convicted in two separate trials in New York.

Selna also ordered Michael Avenatti to pay over $10 million in restitution to four clients and to the IRS.

“Michael Avenatti was a corrupt lawyer who claimed he was fighting for the little guy. In fact, he only cared about his own selfish interests,” US Attorney Martin Estrada said in a statement following the sentencing. “He stole millions of dollars from his clients – all to finance his extravagant lifestyle that included a private jet and race cars. As a result of his illegal acts, he has lost his right to practice law in California, and now he will serve a richly deserved prison sentence.”

Dean Steward, an attorney for Avenatti, said in a statement to CNN that the sentence “was overly harsh and uncalled for,” adding that his client described it in court as being “off the charts.”

“When compared with similar high-profile cases, the unfairness is glaring,” Steward said.

Monday’s sentence represents the latest episode in an extraordinary years-long legal drama surrounding Avenatti, whose representation of Stormy Daniels, the adult film star who alleged she had an affair with former President Donald Trump years before he ran for office, made the pugnacious attorney a household name.

“Avenatti’s fraud was egregious, and the court plainly meant to send a strong message. But a 14-year sentence is extraordinarily long given all the circumstances,” said CNN senior legal analyst and former federal prosecutor Elie Honig.

The prison sentence Avenatti is currently serving was given after he was convicted for attempting to extort millions of dollars from Nike and stealing nearly $300,000 from a book advance from Daniels, his then-client. (Trump has denied having an affair with Daniels.)

Avenatti had faced a statutory maximum of 83 years in prison in the California case.

Earlier this year, the Justice Department dropped the 31 remaining fraud counts Avenatti was facing after he agreed to plead guilty to the handful of charges. Federal prosecutors said in a court filing at the time that they wouldn’t move ahead with the remaining 31 counts of wire fraud, bank fraud and tax-related charges because the judge could consider those allegations when he eventually sentenced Avenatti.

In pleading guilty earlier this year, Avenatti admitted to stealing millions of dollars from clients, including $4 million from a client with major disabilities. According to the indictment, after Avenatti negotiated settlements for the clients that required payment to go to them, he would lie to the clients about the terms of the settlements, instead depositing the funds into attorney trust accounts he controlled. He would then embezzle and misappropriate those funds, according to the indictment, and to prevent discovery of his scheme, he would tell clients the settlement proceeds hadn’t yet been paid, among other tactics.

Austin Lee Edwards is a man from Virginia who has is believed to be responsible for a triple murder in California. According to police reports Austin Lee Edwards was cat fishing the teenage daughter of one of the victims and his betrayal would see him travel to Riverside California where he would murder Mark Winek and his wife Sharie Winek along with their 38-year-old daughter Brooke Winek. After he allegedly murdered the three victims he would set the home on fire and then try to leave the scene with the teenage girl. Police would be able to track down the vehicle and a shootout began where police would shoot and kill Edwards.

The murders of a husband and wife and their daughter in Riverside allegedly stemmed from a catfishing incident involving the teenage daughter of one of the victims, police said.

According to an update issued by the Riverside Police Department on Sunday, Mark Winek and his wife Sharie Winek along with their 38-year-old daughter Brooke Winek were killed by a man who was reportedly involved in an online relationship with the teenage daughter of Brooke.

The incident all unfolded the day after Thanksgiving.

At around 11:08 a.m., officers were sent to conduct a welfare check regarding “a young female who appeared distressed” as she was getting into a Red Kia Soul with a man along the 11200 block of Price Court.

While officers were responding, calls began coming in regarding a fire just a few houses down from where the welfare check came from.

Firefighters with the Riverside Fire Department worked to put out the fire and found the bodies of all three Winek family members laying on the ground in the front entry way.

“Their bodies were pulled outside where it was determined they were victims of an apparent homicide,” read the statement issued by police.

According to police, a preliminary investigation revealed the young female described in the initial welfare check call was a teen who lived at the home where the fire broke out. She was with a man identified as 28-year-old Austin Lee Edwards of North Chesterfield, Virginia.

Detectives said Austin Lee Edwards had met the teen girl online “through the common form of online deception known as catfishing.”

Police said Austin Lee Edwards traveled to Riverside from Virginia, where they said he parked his vehicle in a neighbor’s driveway and walked to the teen’s home. Investigators believe Edwards lured the teen into an online relationship.

“We had a grandmother, grandfather and a mother of this teen murdered by this suspect who traveled from across the country for, most likely, the sexual exploitation of this teenager,” said RPD Ofc. Ryan Railsback during an interview with Eyewitness News on Sunday. “What happened here in terms of the ‘catfishing’ as they call it … that common practice of, you know, online deception where you’re pretending to be someone else.”

Later that day, police say Austin Lee Edwards was found driving with the teen through San Bernardino County when he was located by the county sheriff’s department in the unincorporated area of Kelso.

Police said Edwards fired shots at deputies and was shot and killed by deputies shortly after. The teen was not injured and is safe, according to police.

Edwards had worked for the Virginia State Police until he recently began working for the Washington County Sheriff’s Office, according to investigators.

“Our hearts go out to the Winek family and their loved ones during this time of tremendous grief, as this is a tragedy for all Riversiders,” stated Riverside Police Chief Larry Gonzalez. “This is yet another horrific reminder of the predators existing online who prey on our children. If you’ve already had a conversation with your kids on how to be safe online and on social media, have it again. If not, start it now to better protect them.”

The exact cause of the Winek family’s deaths remain unknown.

The cause of the house fire continues to be under investigation although police said “it appears at this point to have been intentionally ignited.”

During a vigil on Saturday, neighbors told Eyewitness News the Winek family was always neighborly and went out of their way to help the community. The victims’ family was in attendance but did not wish to speak with the media.

Some said they are devastated.

“I just want everyone to know how loving they were. They don’t deserve this. I’m not eating. I’m not sleeping. It just hit me very, very hard,” said Bonnie Davis, who said she has lived nextdoor to the Wineks for two decades. “They were just that type people that you would just never wake up to think that you would hear this of them.”

Nicholas Gutierrez More News

California police officials have released the wrong-way driver accused of plowing his SUV into a group of police recruits and staff earlier this week, citing the “extreme complexity” of the ongoing case.

Nicholas Joseph Gutierrez, 22, was released from police custody late Thursday – just hours after officials announced that he had been charged with the attempted murder in connection with Wednesday’s devastating wrong-way wreck.

In a shocking reversal, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said early Friday morning that the agency had released Gutierrez just before 10 p.m. local time Thursday.

“Due to the extreme complexity of the investigation, which includes ongoing interviews, video surveillance review, and additional evidence needed to be analyzed, homicide investigators have released Mr. Gutierrez from the Sheriff’s Department custody,” the agency said in a press release announcing the change.

The charge of attempted murder of a peace officer(s) requires evidence that the crime was intentional rather than that someone was mistaken or distracted or otherwise did not mean to commit the act.

According to local affiliate FOX 11 Los Angeles, Sheriff Alex Villanueva had previously said that investigators had gleaned enough to suspect intent.

“They did a thorough investigation. They interviewed dozens and dozens of witnesses and victims,” Villanueva said, according to the report. “That was the conclusion.”

On Wednesday, Villanueva said that 75 recruits from Sheriff’s Academy Class 464 had been running near the intersection of Mills Avenue and Telegraph Road in Whittier, California, just before 6:30 a.m., when they were struck. The group was running with a pair of police vehicles, and some runners were wearing reflective vests.

The SUV then plowed into a light pole before coming to a stop.

“It happened so quickly that just the people that just saw it veer into them, they jumped out of the way, but the people behind had no chance, because they never saw it,” Villanueva said. “They didn’t have that sufficient warning.”

“There were so many bodies scattered everywhere in different states of injuries,” he said.

Gutierrez allegedly had a blood-alcohol content of zero, and a field sobriety test was negative for obvious impairment. Information regarding any drugs in his system was not immediately available.

Several recruits suffered injuries that varied from broken bones to head trauma and the “loss of limb.” As of Wednesday, five were critically injured.

The California Highway Patrol is also investigating the collision. Those with any information related to the incident should call the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department’s Homicide Bureau at 323-890-5500.
