Day 1 of the Carly Madison Gregg murder trial began with a somber atmosphere in the Rankin County Courthouse as the prosecution presented evidence to the jury, including a 911 call recording and body cam footage after the March shootings.

Gregg, 15, is accused of murdering her 40-year-old mother, Ashley Smylie, and attempting to murder her stepfather, Heath Smylie, on March 19 at the family’s Brandon home in the 200 block of Ashton Way. Gregg was 14 at the time of the alleged offense.

Gregg, who was dressed in a white dress with gold buttons, appeared to become emotional frequently throughout her Monday court appearance.

Around 3:20 p.m., the state called its first witness, Rankin County Dispatcher Kevin Collins, to testify about a 911 call from Heath which lasted about six minutes.

On the call, played inside the courtroom, Heath can be heard sounding hysterical and frantic saying Gregg shot him and killed her mother.

As the recording played, Gregg held her head downward. Gregg often rubbed her nose, letting out light whimpers with her shoulders shaking.

Later on in the audio, Heath can be heard saying, “God, why?”

As the call continued to play, Heath can be heard on the recording letting out more cries as he said he found Ashley’s deceased body in Gregg’s room.

At the same time inside the courtroom, Gregg was handed a tissue box. Gregg used the tissues to wipe her face.

Gregg appeared to become more emotional when prosecutors played the bodycam footage of the first deputy who arrived at the scene on March 19. The deputy was identified as Rankin County Patrol Deputy Hunter Lewis.

Lewis said when he arrived at the Brandon home, the front door was locked. While outside the door, Lewis testified that he heard someone screaming “hysterically” inside of the house. Lewis said that person was soon identified as Heath, who the deputy deemed “upset.”

The bodycam footage playing inside the courtroom showed Heath falling to the ground while telling Lewis that his wife, Ashley, was deceased inside the house. Heath told the deputy that he sustained a gunshot wound. Heath also told the deputy that Gregg ran out the back of the house after the shootings.

Bodycam footage showed Lewis making his way through the house where he found Ashley, lying straight on her back in Gregg’s room with a bloody towel draped over her face.

Lewis said he lifted the towel discovering Ashley had “a bullet in her head.”

The jury members sat in their chairs watching as the bodycam footage played on a monitor for 30 to 40 minutes before being cut off by the prosecutors.

After the jury was selected Monday, opening statements were presented before the first witness was called.

Katheryn Newman, one of the state prosecutors, began painting a picture to the jury about Gregg’s “secret life,” including a boyfriend, a secret phone, social media accounts and self-harm.

On the morning of March 19, Newman said Gregg and her mother rode together to Northwest Rankin High School. Gregg was a student, and Ashley was a teacher at the school.

Newman said on school grounds, Gregg got into an altercation with one of her friends, “cursing him out.” Newman said the friend was “so worried” about Gregg’s “marijuana use” that he sent an email to Ashley describing what he knew. Newman said the friend felt the “need to intervene.”

At approximately 3:30 p.m., Newman said Gregg and Ashley arrive back at the house. Newman said moments after arriving at the home, Ashley “took some items” out of Gregg’s bedroom. Newman identified one of those items as “four boxes that contained vape pens.”

Sometime after, Gregg allegedly shot her mother with a .357 Magnum gun she was concealing behind her back. Newman said one projectile was removed from Ashley’s brain and another from Ashley’s neck which matched the ballistics from the weapon Gregg used in the shooting. Newman said Gregg’s hands also tested positive for gunshot residue.

Newman said Gregg also called a friend, who came over. Gregg allegedly asked the friend if they were “squeamish around dead bodies” before showing the friend Smylie’s deceased body.

“I put three in my mom, three more for my stepdad,” said Newman, referring to an alleged statement Gregg made to the friend.

Defense Attorney Bridget Todd disputed the claims made by the prosecutors in her opening statement, stating Gregg “loved her mother” and was “a good student.”

Todd said jurors will hear from Heath, who is expected to stand beside Gregg. According to Todd, Heath believes Gregg didn’t recognize him when he came home. Todd said Heath believes the teen was terrified.

Todd told the jury that evidence will show that Gregg and her mother were “worried” that the teenager had the same mental illness that her father had.

Todd said, “while the events on March 19 were tragic,” they were not “intentional.” The defense’s plea is insanity.

If convicted, Gregg faces a potential sentence of life in prison. She previously turned down a plea deal offered by prosecutors that would have sent her to prison for 40 years.

Trial is set to resume at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 17.

Bricen Rivers Murders Lauren Johansen

Bricen Rivers Lauren Johansen
Bricen Rivers Lauren Johansen

Bricen Rivers is an alleged killer from Tennessee who has been charged with the murder of his ex girlfriend Lauren Johansen

According to police reports Bricen Rivers had been arrested and charged with kidnapping and a brutal assault of Lauren Johansen back in December 2023. Even though family members would tell the Judge that their daughter life would be in danger if Rivers was let out of jail the Judge would eventually lower his bond and Bricen would be able to bond out

Just days after being released from a Tennessee jail the body of Lauren Johansen would be found mutilated and wrapped in trash bags at a Mississippi cemetery and Bricen Rivers would be arrested and charged with his murder

As part of his release Bricen Rivers was suppose to stay in Tennessee and be fitted with an ankle monitor, both of which he completely ignored. A security camera at the residence of Lauren Johansen was disabled and her front door was open as well as her car was missing. By the time they were able to track down her car it was too late as it was located at a cemetery in Mississippi where her body would be found

Bricen Rivers News

Days after a woman’s ex-boyfriend bonded out of jail in Nashville, Tennessee, without an ankle monitor, despite her family’s insistence in court that her life would be in danger unless he remained in custody, 22-year-old Lauren Johansen was found dead Wednesday in her own car in a Mississippi cemetery, “mutilated” and wrapped in sheets and trash bags.

This is the series of events that was recounted by Lauren’s father Lance Johansen in an emotional interview with local ABC and CBS affiliate WLOX. The reported orthopedic surgeon said that family begged a Nashville judge not to let 23-year-old Bricen Rivers out of jail, but the court allowed it, and then his daughter was murdered as a result.

Lance said that he appeared in court and urged Judge Cheryl Blackburn not to let Rivers out of jail during a pending aggravated kidnapping, aggravated stalking and coercion of a witness case from December 2023, because he was certain the defendant “was going to kill” Lauren, who was the victim in the pending case.

Blackburn, whose competency has been questioned in recent months by local defense lawyers, lowered Rivers’ bond from $250,000 to $150,000, records show. It’s unclear exactly when the defendant was released, but it was a matter of days before Johansen’s death, and prosecutors reportedly said they objected to the bond lowering.

Rivers allegedly ignored a requirement to stay in Davidson County, Tenn., ignored a requirement to get an ankle monitor, and was subsequently arrested and charged with Lauren Johansen’s murder across state lines.

The WLOX news segment aired a message that Lance Johansen said he received from the Davidson County District Attorney’s Office on July 1 telling him that Rivers was out of jail.

“This is Bailey calling from the district attorney’s office in Nashville. Bricen Rivers was released from custody. He was supposed to report straight to a GPS company and be put on a GPS monitor and he was not to leave Davidson County,” the recording aired on the news said. “But as soon as he was released, he did not report to that GPS monitoring company, and he has not been heard from. I wanted to make sure Lauren is safe.”

By that point, it seems, it was already close to too late to save Lauren. The father said that he texted Lauren and got a response that didn’t sound like her. Then, in the early morning hours of July 2, he saw that the tracking feature on Lauren’s Life360 location sharing app was no longer active.

The story only got worse from there.

Lance told WLOX that he reported his daughter missing to police in Hattiesburg soon after he learned that a security camera at a home where Lauren lived with her sister was no longer functioning, that the front door to the residence was open, and that Lauren and her car were not there.

The grieving father said that by the time Lauren’s car was found via OnStar on Wednesday afternoon in “the middle of the cemetery” in Harrison County, he knew that “she was dead.”

But he could not have been prepared for what he saw next.

“When we got there, her car was in the middle of the cemetery and she was in the back of the car wrapped up in sheets and trash bags. She was basically beaten to death,” Lance Johansen reportedly told WLOX. “Her face was smashed in, her head was smashed in, she was brutally beaten to the point she couldn’t see out of either eye when she finally died and there was multiple holes in her head. I helped the coroner lift her body out of the car. It was just mutilated.”

“Everything she did, everything she touched turned to gold — except for this guy,” he added.

Rivers allegedly ran off when cops arrived at the cemetery and was arrested in the woods several hours later.

Jail records reviewed by Law&Crime show that Bricen Rivers was booked with a $1,000,000 bond not long after midnight on July 4.

Six people are dead and another was wounded Friday in a series of shootings in Tate County, Mississippi after a man opened fire on his ex-wife and potentially other family members, Tate County Sheriff Brad Lance told CNN.

The suspect, Richard Dale Crum, 52, was arrested after the alleged rampage and is facing charges of first-degree murder in connection with the case, the sheriff’s office said. Additional charges are expected to be filed, the department said.

Authorities got the first 911 call around 11 a.m. ET after the suspect pulled into the parking lot of a store in Arkabutla, a small rural town in northern Mississippi, and fired into the car next to him where he fatally shot the driver, Lance said. Another person in the vehicle was not injured.

Lance said the suspected gunman went into the store then took off, driving to his ex-wife’s home. Lance said the suspect shot and killed his ex-wife before striking her fiancé, who was also in the residence.

Deputies caught up to the suspect after finding a vehicle matching its description in front of a residence that authorities determined belonged to him, Lance said.

On a small road behind the suspect’s home, authorities found two men who had been shot and killed. One was found on the road and the other was in a vehicle, Lance said.

Another two victims were found shot and killed in a house neighboring the suspect’s home, Lance said. According to Lance, deputies believe the suspect might be related to the victims, a man and woman.

Lance said another person was injured in the shootings. That person was treated by emergency crews and not taken to a hospital for additional treatment, Lance said.

Deputies took the suspect into custody as he was trying to leave the scene near his house, Lance said.

Lance said deputies found several handguns and a shotgun in the suspect’s car. The suspect is being held at the Tate County jail, according to Lance.

The victims have not been identified. Lance said a motive is unclear at this time.

CNN has not been able to determine if Crum has obtained an attorney.

The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation is working with local law enforcement in the investigation, Bailey Martin, a spokesperson for the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation told CNN.

Gov. Tate Reeves said he’d been briefed on the shootings, explaining in a tweet that the suspect is believed to have acted alone.

“I will ensure that the full resources of the state are available to law enforcement as we continue to investigate the situation,” Reeves said.

Tate County is in northwest Mississippi, about 30 minutes south of Memphis, Tennessee.
