Police working New Year’s Eve detail in Times Square were wounded by a machete-wielding man who struck multiple officers in the head in what law enforcement are investigating as a possible targeted attack.

Federal and local authorities are digging into the background of 19-year-old Trevor Bickford, who allegedly attacked a group of NYPD officers outside a security screening zone in Times Square just after 10 p.m. Saturday, multiple law enforcement sources said.

Trevor Bickford, of Wells, Maine, allegedly approached the officers on Manhattan’s 8th Avenue between 51st and 52nd streets armed with a large knife he used to swing at three different officers, NYPD Commissioner Keechant Sewell said at an overnight press conference.

Sewell said the man dealt two of the officers blows to the head, giving an 8-year veteran a head laceration and a recent police academy graduate a skull fracture. All three NYPD members were taken to Bellevue Hospital and were expected to survive

At least one officer fired upon the suspect, striking him in the shoulder. Police sources said the alleged attacker’s injuries are also non-life-threatening. A preliminary review shows the man has no previous arrests but he was known to federal and local law enforcement because of previous online postings, the sources added.

Law enforcement officials said they are looking into whether the man who allegedly attacked the officers had previously posted what they called jihadist writings online and traveled to New York City to target police.

“We believe this was a sole individual at this time, there’s nothing to suggest otherwise,” said Mike Driscoll, assistant director in charge of the New York FBI Field Office. The FBI’s Joint Terrorism task Force is also investigating.

The knife attack and gunfire startled a long line of crowds waiting to join the NYE celebrations. A local pizza shop employee said panicked revelers fled amid the chaos.

Police have closed down the immediate area for their investigation. The nearby New Year’s Eve celebration in Times Square was not impacted

Gigi Jordan More News

Gigi Jordan – the million mom who murdered her 8-year-old autistic son in a Manhattan hotel room – was found dead Friday morning in a Brooklyn home where she had been renting, her attorney and law enforcement sources confirmed.

Jordan’s bail had just been ordered revoked by Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor a day earlier amid ongoing questions and legal fights over whether she could remain out on bail as she sought a new trial.

The 62-year-old pharma millionaire had admitted to plunging a lethal dose of medications down her son’s throat with a syringe in a hotel room in 2010. She then ingested multiple medications herself and emailed a relative, who alerted authorities.

Jordan claimed at her trial that she had decided to kill herself and her son, Jude Mirra, because she believed that one of her ex-husbands was planning to have her killed, and that without her the boy would fall under the care of her other ex-husband and would be sexually abused. Both men denied her allegations against them.

Jordan was convicted of manslaughter in November 2014 and sentenced to 18 years in prison.

One of her attorney’s, Norman Siegel, confirmed Jordan’s death saying it “is unbelievably sad.” Appeals were ongoing, he added, and in his view Jordan “… had a lot still to contribute to society.”

Sources said Jordan was found dead Friday around 12:05 a.m. An NYPD spokesperson declined to comment, except to confirm an ongoing death investigation linked to the Brooklyn residence.

Several officials said suicide was one possibility given Jordan’s bail being revoked and that she was found dead in a bathtub with a note nearby. But Siegel said his client sounded in good spirits hours earlier when the two spoke by phone.

The medical examiner will determine the cause of death.

Roland Codrington Charged With 2 Murders During Crime Spree In NYC

Roland Codrington

Roland Codrington is a man from New York City who has been charged with two random murders that took place during a crime spree. According to NYC police reports Roland Codrington would slash the throat of 51 year old James Cunningham after he left a bar leaving the man to die on the street. Days later Roland Codrington would enter a bar and attack the bartender with a bat and slashed 2 men who would survive their injuries. Roland Codrington would later stab to death Dr. Bruce Maurice Henry after a brief argument. NYPD would arrest Roland Codrington and charged him with the 2 murders plus other charges

Roland Codrington More News

Two seemingly isolated and random outdoor murders at the height of the holiday season and of the kind New Yorkers have increasingly feared since the pandemic began were blamed by police officials Monday on a city resident with a criminal record.

James Essig, chief of detectives for the New York Police Department, underscored at a news conference how brief and unplanned were the encounters Roland Codrington is accused of having with two men slashed to death in nighttime killings three days apart, resulting in two murder charges.

It was not immediately clear who would represent Codrington at initial court appearances.

The killings come at a time of increased anxiety citywide over random violence. Mayor Eric Adams recently announced plans for authorities to more aggressively intervene to help people who need mental health treatment, including forcing individuals off streets and subways and into treatment.

Early this year after taking office, Adams said even he didn’t feel safe riding the subway, despite boosted police patrols.

In April, a man was charged with injuring 10 people in Brooklyn when he set off a pair of smoke grenades and then scattered a barrage of random shots inside a train between stations. In May, a 48-year-old man was shot and killed riding a train between Brooklyn and lower Manhattan.

Despite random acts, the number of crimes reported on public transit by September was averaging slightly below pre-pandemic levels, though ridership was also down.

In the arrest announced Monday, Essig said the first killing Codrington was charged with occurred at 1 a.m. on Dec. 19, when 51-year-old James Cunningham, who had just left a bar after drinking a seltzer, was walking several blocks from Union Square when he was approached by Codrington, who was accompanied by his girlfriend.

After a 20-second-long, caught-on-camera dispute, Codrington, 35, slashed Cunningham across the neck with a knife, leaving him to die, Essig said.

At 11:30 p.m. on Dec. 22, Codrington entered a Lower East Side bar with a pit bull and a baseball bat, Essig said. Crodrington thought he had been disrespected by employees at the bar a week earlier. He assaulted the bartender and destroyed property, Essig said.

When two customers intervened, they were stabbed with a large knife, incurring non-life threatening wounds, Essig added.

Afterward, Essig said, Codrington went home, then said he’d “cool off” with a walk through the park.

There, he encountered Dr. Bruce Maurice Henry, 60, stabbing him repeatedly after a verbal exchange in which he became enraged, Essig said. The police official said Codrington left the area with his girlfriend in Henry’s Mercedes Benz. Henry’s body was found at 2:15 a.m. on Dec. 23.

Essig credited three “sharp-eyed police officers” from upper Manhattan with spotting the car at 9:40 p.m. on Dec. 24 and apprehending Codrington without resistance. Codrington, he said, has 12 prior arrests, including four assaults with weapons. Essig said police were investigating whether he’s responsible for other random acts.

Asked about the girlfriend, Essig said she’s involved in the investigation but “hasn’t been charged as of yet.”

He said he couldn’t explain what the doctor was doing in the park or what the argument was about, but added: “You know, for whatever reason he was in the park at that time, he didn’t deserve what he got.”
