A Florida mother and her boyfriend have been arrested following the death of her 2-year-old son earlier this week.
Christian Parnell and Curtis David Willey, both 33, are charged with aggravated manslaughter of a child and are being held without bail at the Suwannee County Jail.
This comes after medical staff noted that the child was swollen, covered in bruises and had scarring that appeared to be caused by cigarette burns.
The Suwannee County Sheriff’s Office Communications Center received an emergency dispatch call from the couple’s residence reporting an unresponsive child shortly after 3 p.m. on Oct. 13, according to a probable cause affidavit obtained by PEOPLE.
Life-saving measures were performed on the victim who was then rushed to a local hospital, where he was declared deceased shortly after arrival.
Six hours later, both Parnell and Willey had been booked into custody.
“During the initial response and subsequent investigation, Deputies and Investigators observed injuries to the child that were consistent with ongoing physical abuse and prolonged neglect,” the SCSO said in a news release shared with PEOPLE.
That release went on to say: “The child exhibited significant bruising, swelling, and other trauma inconsistent with the explanations provided by the child’s caregivers.”
Investigators then conducted “extensive interviews” and gathered evidence before making the decision to seek arrest warrants for both Parnell and Willey.
Sheriff Sam St. John said that the couple could be facing additional charges once the medical examiner releases the results of the toddler’s autopsy.
In the probable cause affidavit, Investigator Bradley Griffin wrote that after he arrived to the emergency room, medical staff noted that the boy “presented with abnormal swelling to his head, multiple bruises on the legs and groin, and various scars similar to that of a cigarette burn.”
Griffin then interviewed both Parnell and Willey at their home to try and learn more about what happened to the boy and the reason for his injuries.
The boy’s mother allegedly said that her son “was playing with another four-year-old juvenile within the bedroom of the home and ultimately fell off the bed, striking his face.”
He then spoke with Parnell’s boyfriend.
“Willey stated that he was in the living room at the time of the incident and heard a loud bang that ‘sounded like someone hitting metal’ originating from the room that the children were playing in,” the affidavit said.
The toddler had a “bloody injury to his mouth” and “swelling to the forehead” but seemed fine, Willey allegedly said.
It was a week later that the toddler started to show concerning symptoms, according to both Willey and Parnell.
A few hours before they called emergency dispatch, Willey called Parnell at work to say that her son needed medical attention, according to the affidavit.
He noted that the toddler’s eyes were “rolling” and he heard “gurgling” while speaking with the investigator.
Per the affidavit, Parnell later admitted to investigators she should have sought medical attention for her son’s injury.
It was immediately after those interviews that the decision was made to arrest the couple.
The affidavit stated: “Parnell and Willey grossly and flagrantly disregarded the medical needs of, to the extent that [redacted] ultimately succumbed to injury and passed away.”
The affidavit continued: “Parnell and Willey willfully failed or omitted to provide a child with the care, supervision, and services necessary to maintain the child’s physical and mental health, including medicine and medical services that a prudent person would consider essential for the wellbeing of the child.”
Parnell and Willey have not yet made their first court appearance.
