A Nicholas County woman who reported her daughter missing earlier this month has been charged with murder after investigators said human remains believed to be the woman were found in Greenbrier County.

Staci Leann Wind, 50, of Richwood, was arrested Saturday and charged with first-degree murder in the death of her daughter, Ayla Wind, 26.

According to a criminal complaint filed in Nicholas County Magistrate Court, Wind went to the Richwood Police Department on May 18 and reported Ayla Wind missing since May 15.

Investigators later found human remains in the Summit Lake area of Greenbrier County on May 22, according to the West Virginia State Police. Authorities said the decomposed remains were discovered in a shallow grave and had also been burned. Two ferns were found on top of the grave, Sgt. D.L. Gordon wrote in the complaint.

The complaint states investigators also found a burn area nearby containing human bones, a cellphone matching a description of Ayla Wind’s phone, charcoal and wood chips.

State police executed a search warrant Saturday at Staci Wind’s home on Riverside Drive in Richwood. During the search, investigators said presumptive chemical tests indicated the presence of human blood stains in several areas of the home.

According to the complaint, investigators also found two plant baskets in the bed of Staci Wind’s truck that matched the shape and size of the ferns found on the grave site. Troopers said a manual for a booster seat matching one found near the burial area was also located in the truck.

The complaint said Staci Wind told investigators she stopped and bought charcoal, wood chips and lighter fluid before traveling to Summit Lake on May 16, where she said she camped in her truck.

Investigators also alleged Wind told officers the victims’ mattress had been given to an unknown man on May 20, but authorities said a cut-up mattress with blood stains was found in garbage bags at the home.

“There were also blood handprints on the victim’s bedroom wall,” Gordon said.

According to a statement from Wind’s husband, who was also identified as the victim’s father, the mother and daughter were the only people living in the home beginning May 13.

Wind is currently at the Central Regional Jail. A preliminary hearing has been set for Thursday in Nicholas County Magistrate Court.
