Howard Lewis More News

A man convicted of killing his infant son has been sentenced to death.

According to the Walker County District Attorney’s Office, Howard Lewis was sentenced by a jury on Thursday night after being convicted October 29.

Authorities say Lewis’s son, Aiyden Lewis, was found strangled at his grandparents home near Huntsville in 2013.

Howard Lewis will be now be processed and taken to the Polunksy unit in Livingston

According to the district attorney’s office, Lewis has not been separately charged for the death of Shanta Crawford, the child’s grandmother.

“It was the decision of the Walker County District Attorney’s Office to proceed under the provision of the Texas Penal Code that defines capital murder as causing the death of a child under the age of 10 years. At this time, there is no plan to proceed with a second prosecution for the death of Ms. Crawford, but that possibility remains open in the future,” said Stephanie Stroud, first assistant district attorney in the case.

Kristopher Love More News

Kristopher Love, the hitman who was convicted of capital murder last week in the killing of Dr. Kendra Hatcher, a pediatric dentist, was sentenced to death Wednesday in Dallas.

The Dallas County jury took only three hours before voting to condemn Love, 34, to death by lethal injection.

Hatcher, 35, was shot and killed in the parking garage of her Dallas apartment building in September 2015. Prosecutors said Love was hired by Brenda Delgado, 36, the ex-girlfriend of Hatcher’s boyfriend; Delgado is awaiting trial on a charge of capital murder.

A third person, Crystal Cortes, 26, who prosecutors said was the getaway driver, pleaded guilty this month to a reduced charge of murder and was sentenced to 35 years in prison in exchange for her cooperation and testimony.

“Kristopher Love agreed to commit the murder for drugs and money,” said the lead prosecutor, Kevin Brooks, chief of the district attorney’s felony trial bureau. “This was not a crime of spontaneity. This was a premeditated and well-planned-out crime.”

Delgado, the alleged ringleader, was arrested in Torreon, Mexico, in April 2016 after having been on the run for more than six months. She briefly ended up on the FBI’s Ten Most Wanted Fugitives list.

Investigators said in search warrants that Delgado ended a two-year relationship with Hatcher’s boyfriend earlier in 2015. They said that she used a black iPhone to track Hatcher’s cellphone, manipulated Love with offers of drugs and persuaded Cortes to drive the getaway car for $500.

Tami Patano, a friend and dental school classmate of Hatcher’s, testified during the sentencing phase on Monday that she was still struggling to deal with the crime.

“I don’t do a lot of smiling anymore,” she said, according to NBC Dallas-Fort Worth. “I have isolated myself from a lot of my friends.

“It has affected my marriage, my ability as a mother. It is affecting everything,” she said. “And I am not the only one. This is a butterfly effect. Kendra’s murder has affected thousands of people

Gary Green More News

A  Nueces County jury convicted a man in the 2013 fatal shooting of a West Texas sheriff’s deputy.

The jury found Gary David Green guilty of capital murder Monday in connection with the death of Upton County deputy Billy “Bubba” Kennedy, court records show.

Green, who is now facing the death penalty, was arrested in October 2013 after a shootout at a McCamey convenience store, according to the Associated Press.

The trial was moved from West Texas to South Texas because of a change of venue.

McCamey — which is in Upton County and has a population of around 2,000 people — is about 50 miles south of Odessa.

After weeks of jury selection, testimony began last week before visiting judge Tessa Herr. The jury returned a verdict in less than half an hour, according to a court official.

The trial’s punishment phase is expected to start Wednesday. In Texas, capital murder is punishable by either life in prison without parole or the death penalty.

According to a news article from the Odessa American, Green’s credit card was declined at the convenience store and he demanded free gas.

He was approached by Kennedy and another deputy, who ran a check on the truck’s license plate, the article states. The truck has been reported stolen. When Kennedy went up to the vehicle’s driver-side door, he unfastened his gun from its holster.

Green opened the door and fired at the deputy, the report states. Both officers reportedly returned fire, it states.

Last week, the clerk who worked that night described seeing Green’s vehicle parked outside store and said he came in and tried to buy some items and gas. But his card didn’t work and he tried to bribe her into giving him the items, she said.

The woman said she thought he was having a rough night and was just an upset customer when he mentioned that he didn’t want anyone to die.

He took some items she gave him through a store program and left behind a debit card with his name – Gary Green.

She said she later heard gunshots and saw Kennedy on the ground.

Ronald Haskell More News

A man found guilty of killing six members of his former wife’s family in Texas will die by lethal injection, a jury decided.

The judge made the announcement Friday concerning the fate of Ronald Lee Haskell, 39, who was convicted in the 2014 killings of Stephen and Katie Stay and four of their five children in Spring, Texas.

Haskell was found guilty of capital murder last month.

Authorities said he entered the Stays’ home on July 9, 2014, demanding to know the whereabouts of his estranged wife, Melannie Haskell. She was not there, but her sister, Katie Stay, and her family were.

Stephen Stay, 39, Katie Stay, 33, two boys, ages 13 and 4, and two girls, ages 9 and 7, were killed when Haskell opened fire, the Harris County Sheriff’s Office said.

Only one member of the family, then 15-year-old Cassidy Stay, survived.

Authorities at the time indicated she was critically wounded, though she later made a full recovery.

Haskell was led out of court Friday by a court deputy after a brief witness impact statement was read by Cassidy Stay.

She said in part, “For the past five years I always wanted to know how you felt about me and what kind of remorse you felt?”

When she learned that Haskell apparently didn’t express remorse, Cassidy Stay said, “Only God can help me now.”

Hector Acosta More News

A Tarrant County jury sentenced convicted killer Hector Acosta to the death penalty for the September 2017 murders of Erick Zelaya and 17-year-old Iris Chirinos in Arlington.

Acosta, a self-proclaimed sicario (“hitman”) for the Cartel Del Noreste shot his then-roommate Zelaya and his girlfriend Chirinos in their sleep, before mutilating their bodies with a machete and two-by-four. He decapitated Zelaya, and after dumping the bodies in a shallow grave in his backyard, he rode a bicycle through the neighborhood to a walking trail a few blocks away where he left Zelaya’s head along with a sign threatening future violence. Acosta claimed to have killed the couple in retaliation for a past drive-by incident in which he believed Zelaya had been a participant.

During the punishment phase of the trial, the prosecution introduced evidence of another capital murder Acosta was believed to have committed in a Fort Worth house. In July 2017, Acosta and accomplices bound and viciously beat Triston Algiene while robbing him. After Algiene gave them the wrong PIN number for his bank account, he was shot to death. Acosta then cut his body in half, buried him under the house and covered his body with cement. Arlington Police Detective Grant Gildon received information about this murder and informed Fort Worth Police, who discovered the body after digging up the concrete slab. The hard work of Gildon, fellow Arlington PD Detective Michael Barakat and Fort Worth Police Detectives Jerry Cedillo and Ernie Pate was instrumental in bringing Acosta to justice.

“Have you ever knowingly in your life sat in the room with a more dangerous person?” lead prosecutor Kevin Rousseau asked the jury in closing arguments for the punishment phase. “He can’t follow the rules of a cartel, but you are expected to believe he’ll follow the rules of a prison warden? He is extraordinarily violent. He deals in terror. It’s his job.”

A native of Monterrey, Mexico, Acosta allegedly showed an interest in gang life from as early as age 7. He participated in multiple gangs in both Mexico and Houston before joining the Cartel Del Noreste for which he claimed to have performed kidnappings, tortures and other murders. Evidence was presented that while being held in the jail awaiting trial, Acosta attempted to start a drug trafficking operation.

“Acosta is not a product of a bad environment,” said prosecutor Tim Rodgers. “He is the bad element in his environment. That’s what he is and what he wants to be.”

Jurors deliberated for just over four hours before sentencing Acosta to the death penalty.
