After two and a half days of deliberating, an El Paso jury handed down a sentence of death for a man convicted of murdering, raping and mutilating an Anthony teen in 2002.

Irving Alvin Davis showed no response as the judge read the verdict returning him to death row for the capital murder of 15-year-old Melissa Medina.

The grisly details of Davis sexually assaulting, killing and then cutting of Medina’s fingertips to hide DNA evidence was enough, the jury decided, to merit the death penalty for a second time. Medina’s body was later dumped at a park at Anthony Elementary School where she was discovered.

The original punishment was death, delivered six years ago, but Davis won an appeal overturning that judgment. The judge questioned each juror individually about the decision, all of them affirming the original punishment was correct.

Davis’ mother was clearly emotional as the sentence was read. Medina’s sister, Veronica, was allowed to express her feelings to Davis about the murder.

“That was my sister, my companion. Right now I’m just going day by day, just going through the motions. But I miss her alot, a lot. And you took her away from me,” Veronica told Davis in the courtroom.

She said that her parents would not attend the sentencing verdict because they could not bear to see Davis.
