Police in Kalamazoo Michigan have arrested Damien Lang and have charged him with the murder of Bryce Salter. According to police reports Bryce Salter and Damien Lang were involved in an altercation outside of a night club near the Western Michigan University earlier this month. Damien Lang allegedly pulled out a gun and shot Bryce Salter who would die at the hospital from his injuries. Damien Lang has been charged with murder as well as three counts third-offense felony firearm, carrying a concealed weapon, felon in possession of a firearm, and felon in possession of ammunition

A 29-year-old Lansing man is in custody in the shooting death of a 21-year-old Kalamazoo resident in a strip mall parking lot near the Western Michigan University campus Nov. 11, 2022.

Damien Lang, 29, faces six felony weapons charges and an open murder charge in the fatal shooting of Bryce Salter, 21, in the the parking lot in the Campus Pointe Mall on West Michigan Avenue and Howard Street, according to court records.

Lang also facing three counts third-offense felony firearm, carrying a concealed weapon, felon in possession of a firearm, and felon in possession of ammunition, according to court records.

He was arraigned on the seven charges Monday morning.

A man drove Salter to the hospital where he died from his injuries, police said.

Lang is currently being held in the Ingham County Jail on a parole hold and is expected to be arraigned on the homicide this week in Kalamazoo County District Court.

Lang told police he saw Salter standing next to his Dodge Durango in the nearby parking lot by the Y-Bar at around 3:10 a.m. that night.

Surveillance video showed Lang walked over and argued with Salter then pointed a gun at his chest, knocking him to the ground.

Salter got up and began to fight Lang before he was shot, according to police.

Lang told police he blacked out during the shooting and admitted to confronting Salter because he thought he was going to steal his vehicle, according to court records.

“I don’t know what happened, I don’t know. I don’t know what me shot him,” Lang said during a Nov. 11 police interview, according to court records.

Lang admitted to dismantling the gun and getting rid of the weapon and bullets following the shooting, according to police.

Lang’s vehicle was registered to his girlfriend and police arrested him in Lansing after they pinged his cell phone, according to detectives.

Police responded to the scene and found multiple shell castings and the victim’s red hat in the parking lot outside the Y-Bar, according to detectives.

The Campus Pointe Mall, located right outside Western Michigan University’s campus, has been the location for violence in the past.

Three people were injured following a shooting outside of the Y-Bar nightclub in 2019.

Students have expressed concerns for their safety. However, Salter was not a WMU student, according to a university spokesperson.
