A California woman killed her younger sister and 3-week-old daughter over “jealousy” and a “sibling rivalry,” authorities said.
Yarelly Solorio-Rivera, 22, was arrested Wednesday in connection with the Sept. 24 shooting death of her 18-year-old sister, Yanelly Solorio-Rivera, and her baby Celine. Yarelly’s boyfriend, Martin Arroyo-Morales, 26, a gang member, was also arrested, police said.
Both are charged with two counts of pre-meditated murder, Fresno Police Chief Paco Balderrama said Thursday.
“We have the murder weapon, a Smith & Wesson 9mm handgun, and we have a motive — jealousy and sibling rivalry,” he said. “We saw no remorse whatever, no guilt.”
Officers were called at about 7:20 a.m. on the day of the killings to a home over reports of multiple gunshots heard within a bedroom in the house, Fox San Francisco reported.
Balderrama said “the scene was traumatic for all officers, detectives, EMS personnel, and crime scene technicians who responded to the scene.”
When they arrived, police found Yanelly Solorio-Rivera and the child dead. Solorio-Rivera was shot multiple times.
Investigators had strong suspicions early on but didn’t have enough evidence to make an arrest, the chief said

A former Playboy and Maxim model has quietly entered a plea in the death of 71-year-old Dr. Thomas Burchard.
Kelsey Turner entered an Alford plea and stipulated to facing 10 to 25 years in prison when she’s sentenced in January, a representative for the defendant confirmed to Law&Crime. Turner was arrested in the infamous case back in 2019, when she was accused of murdering the California psychiatrist. Burchard’s body was discovered stuffed in the trunk of a car.
Turner was taken into custody by federal agents after an investigation by the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department (LVMPD) determined she and others were involved in the slaying of Burchard. Turner’s co-defendant and former boyfriend Jon Kennisonpreviously pleaded guilty to murder and conspiracy in the case. Diana Pena also pleaded guilty to accessory to commit murder.
Authorities said the child psychiatrist had known Turner for some time, and even had a relationship with her for years. He had also been paying the model’s rent for nearly a year, KTNV reported. After Burchard abruptly stopped paying Turner’s $3,200 rent per-month in the fall of 2018, Turner, her two children, and her mother were evicted for not paying rent.
On March 7, 2019, LVMPD officers discovered Burchard’s body in an abandoned vehicle near the entrance to Lake Mead National Recreation Area in southeastern Nevada.
The car, located on Silver State Route 147, was reported to authorities by a man driving through the area with his children because it was parked alone with a rock thrown through one of the windows. As investigators inventoried the car, however, the psychiatrist’s body was found stuffed inside the trunk. According to police, Burchard had been bludgeoned to death by some kind of a blunt instrument.
With the Alford plea, Turner avoids trial and does not admit guilt, but she accepts the punishment that goes along with the concession that there is enough evidence to convict.
Las Vegas court records reviewed by Law&Crime say that the plea was entered on Wednesday afternoon.

A Northern California sheriff’s deputy was charged Friday in the killings of a husband and wife who were shot inside their home, prosecutors said.
Prosecutors charged Devin Williams Jr., a deputy with the Alameda County Sheriff’s Office, with two counts of murder and with the special circumstance of avoiding lawful arrest after he fled the Dublin home of Benison and Maria Tran, Alameda County Dist. Atty. Nancy O’Malley said in a statement.
Williams, 24, surrendered to law enforcement hours after he was accused of the slayings. Williams appeared in court Friday but didn’t enter a plea. His attorney, Jesse Garcia, did not immediately return a message seeking comment.
Benison Tran, 57, was a civil engineer. He retired last year after working nearly 29 years for the city of Santa Clara, said Michelle Templeton, a city spokeswoman.
Maria Tran, 42, was a nurse whom Williams met at John George Psychiatric Hospital in San Leandro, where she worked
The couple was fatally shot inside their Dublin home Wednesday. Four other relatives who were in the home, including their child, were unharmed, said Lt. Ray Kelly, a spokesperson with the Alameda County Sheriff’s Office.
A relative of the Trans who saw the slayings called police and identified Williams as the gunman, Kelly said.
Kelly said investigators are still trying to determine the motive.
Williams’ mother, Anitra Williams, told KTVU-TV that her son had been in a romantic relationship with Maria Tran since January and that he believed she was 35 and unmarried.
Anitra Williams said she had warned her son against being with Tran but that her son was “blinded by love.”
“She told him she loved him. They were on a 10-day trip,” Anitra Williams said.
Williams made it 160 miles south to the city of Coalinga, where he called police in Dublin to say he wanted to surrender, Kelly said.
Williams had been with the sheriff’s office since September and was still on probation. He had been assigned to the Oakland courthouse, and there were no concerns about his job performance, Kelly said.

Lawrence Bittaker Death
Lawrence Sigmond Bittaker, one of the “Tool Box Killers” who preyed on teenage girls in Southern California 40 years ago, has died of natural causes, state corrections officials said Monday.
Bittaker and accomplice Roy Lewis North kidnapped, raped, tortured and murdered five girls in 1979. Their nickname came from the tools like a screwdriver, pliers and an ice pick that they used to torture and kill their victims.
Bittaker, 79, died Friday in San Quentin State Prison, the state Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation said in a statement. The cause of death will be determined by the Marin County coroner.
The killings began that June, with the death of Lucinda Lynn Schaefer, 16. She was followed by Andrea Joy Hall, 18; Jacqueline Doris Gilliam, 15; Jacqueline Leah Lamp, 13, and Shirley Lynette Ledford, 16.
Norris testified against Bittaker after pleading guilty to all charges in exchange for prosecutors not seeking the death penalty against him.
A Los Angeles County jury convicted Bittaker of five counts of murder, five counts of kidnapping as well as other charges including criminal conspiracy, rape, oral copulation, sodomy and being an ex-felon in possession of a firearm. He was sentenced to death on March 22, 1981.
Norris was sentenced to a term of 45 years to life and remains in prison.
Due to various legal challenges and court decisions, California has not executed anyone in years, and earlier this year Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom declared a moratorium on executions for as long as he is in office.
According to corrections statistics, 82 condemned California inmates have died from natural causes since 1978, when capital punishment was reinstated after a period in which the state Supreme Court ruled it to be cruel and unusual punishment.
In that span, another 27 inmates have died by suicide, 13 have been executed in California, two have been executed in other states, and 14 have died from other causes. Determinations of the causes of death for four others are pending.
There are now 729 inmates on the state’s death row.
Roy Lewis Norris passed away from natural causes Monday at the California Medical Facility in Vacaville, according to the state Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation. He was 72.
His death came a little more than two months after his partner in the crimes, Lawrence Sigmond Bittaker, died on death row at San Quentin State Prison at the age of 79.
The men were known as the Tool Box Killers because the items they used to torture and murder the girls – such as pliers and ice picks – could be found in a toolbox, according to CBS San Francisco.
Between June and November of 1979, Norris and Whittaker kidnapped, raped and murdered five teen girls: 16-year-old Lucinda Lynn Schaefer, 18-year-old Andrea Joy Hall, 15-year-old Jacqueline Doris Gilliam, 13-year-old Jacqueline Leah Lamp and 16-year-old Shirley Lynette Ledford.
The bodies of Schaefer and Hall were never found, CDCR reports.
As part of a deal with prosecutors that allowed him to avoid the death penalty, Norris plead guilty to five counts of murder, two counts of forcible rape and robbery, the CDCR reports.
Norris testified against Bittaker, who in 1981 was found guilty by a Los Angeles County jury of 26 counts of murder, kidnapping, criminal conspiracy, rape, oral copulation, sodomy and being an ex-felon in possession of a firearm. He was sentenced to death.
