A Toronto-area condo board meeting turned tragic Sunday when a gunman stormed in and killed five people before being fatally shot by police.

“Horrendous scene,” York Regional Police Chief James MacSween said of the crime, according to a report from Associated Press. “Six deceased. One of them is the subject. The other five are victims.”

Police say residents were evacuated from the building shortly after the incident and that there was no further threat to the community after one of their officers put a stop to the massacre, while residents are expected to be allowed back into their units

In addition to the six dead, MacSween said a seventh person who was shot by the suspect is being treated in the hospital and is expected to survive.

According to a report from the Toronto Star Monday, the shooter was identified as 73-year-old resident Francesco Villi. Villi was a longtime resident of the building who had for years targeted the condo board with lawsuits as part of a running dispute with board members.

According to the report, Villi used a semi-automatic handgun to carry out the shooting, but was killed at the scene “following an interaction with police,” the York Regional police said on Twitter.

“I am absolutely shocked and heartbroken that five individuals have lost their lives…and for this to happen in a community like Vaughan…is devastating,” Vaughan mayor Steven Del Duca said in front of the crime scene Monday. “It’s just horrifying and i can’t imagine what the victims families are going through right now.”

The shooting comes just a week after a similar scene unfolded in Rome, Italy, where three women were killed and others were injured after a man opened fire on their condo board meeting.

That shooting took place at a bar in the neighborhood of Fidene, where a man entered the meeting, shouting, “I’ll kill you all” before opening fire on the people in the bar.

“He came into the room, closed the door and shouted ‘I’ll kill you all’ and then started to shoot,” a witness told Italian news agency Ansa.

Four others were injured, one seriously, in the incident.

“The episode of violence that upsets our city is very serious. Three lives lost and seriously injured in a shooting during a condominium meeting,” Rome Mayor Roberto Gualtieri said on Twitter following the shooting.

Members of the Rome condo board were able to subdue and disarm the man before police arrived, telling officers that they knew the man, and he had previously been reported for making threats against community members.

Ryan Grantham More News

Canadian actor Ryan Grantham has been sentenced to life in prison after pleading guilty to murdering his mother, Barbara Waite, in 2020.

The 24-year-old, who played Jeffery Augustine in teen drama Riverdale, was sentenced at British Columbia Supreme Court in Vancouver on Wednesday.

He pleaded guilty to second-degree murder, after having initially been charged with first-degree murder.

Prosecutors said he had also plotted to kill Canadian PM Justin Trudeau.

Grantham admitted to shooting his mother in the back of the head as she played piano in their home, north of Vancouver, the court heard.

In a video taken on his Go-Pro camera after the killing, the actor filmed his mother’s body while saying: “I shot her in the back of the head. In the moments after, she would have known it was me.”

After drinking beer and smoking marijuana for hours following the murder, he packed a car with three guns, ammunition and 12 Molotov cocktails he had made, as well as camping supplies and directions to Mr Trudeau’s Rideau Cottage residence.

He drove roughly 200 kilometres east to the town of Hope, before turning around and driving to a Vancouver police station, where he told an officer: “I killed my mother.”

The court also heard Grantham had considered committing an act of mass violence at Vancouver’s Lions Gate Bridge or at Simon Fraser University, where he had been a student, en route before turning his car around and handing himself in.

Former child actor Grantham appeared in one episode of the CW network show Riverdale in 2019, and also featured in the fantasy drama Supernatural, as well the 2010 film Diary of a Wimpy Kid.

Grantham has been in custody for the past two and a half years, law enforcement officials in Vancouver told Deadline, and has been participating in a mental health program since his arrest.

During the trial, his lawyers argued he had been struggling with anxiety and clinical depression and had expressed a desire to kill himself and harm others in the months leading up to him killing his mother.

He will not be eligible for parole for the first 14 years of his life sentence.

Myles Sanderson More News

The second suspect connected to a mass stabbing spree died shortly after being taken into police custody, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police have confirmed.

In a press conference, the RCMP said that Myles Sanderson went into what was described as “medical distress” shortly after being detained earlier Wednesday afternoon. He was taken to a hospital in Saskatoon and pronounced dead, Assistant Commissioner Rhonda Blackmore told reporters. She said she could not provide further detail about his death, except to say that “all life-saving measures were taken.”

There will be an investigation launched into the circumstances surrounding his death, Blackmore said, and an autopsy will be conducted later this week.

Along with his brother Damien, Myles Sanderson was a suspect in a series of stabbings that killed 10 people in the Canadian province of Saskatchewan. His death comes two days after Damien Sanderson was found dead with wounds that did not appear to be self-inflicted, according to authorities.

Myles Sanderson was arrested after police received reports that a man matching his description had stolen a vehicle, Blackmore said, which culminated in a car chase. Police “directed” his vehicle into a ditch, she said.

The stabbings took place Sunday morning in 13 locations across the James Smith Cree Nation and the nearby village of Weldon. A motive has not yet been determined; police said they believe some of the victims were attacked at random, while others were singled out.

Assistant Commissioner Rhonda Blackmore said that, before Sanderson’s arrest, she had visited James Smith Cree Nation, where many told her they were still frightened by the prospect he might attack again.

“I hope that this brings them some closure in that they can rest easy tonight knowing that Myles Sanderson is no longer a threat to them,” Blackmore said.

Before their deaths, the two Sanderson brothers had been charged with a total of four counts of first-degree murder, two counts of attempted murder and two counts of breaking and entering a residence.
