Authorities claim a man fatally stabbed his mother in the neck after she planned to take him to a mental health facility for his concerning behavior

The victim, Jennifer Crumrine, 54, had initially survived her injuries but died at a hospital, documents state. As of Sunday afternoon, records in Charlotte County, Florida, show that the defendant, Connor Crumrine, 23, is only charged with three counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and one count of resisting an officer without violence. Deputies said Friday that they are working with prosecutors to update charges to reflect the stabbing death.

Cops say the defendant attacked his mother while his elder sister called authorities and the other sister tackled him to stop the stabbing, according to the probable cause affidavit viewed by Law&Crime.

Citing interviews with the survivors, deputies describe a sequence of events going back to Monday night.

“Last night, Connor began making statements to the family trying to teach them how to get into a fetal position and making statements about heaven and hell,” investigators wrote. “During this time Connor would also make a finger gun gesture towards them. Due to a fear that Connor may cause harm to them during the night the rest of the family kept their bedroom doors locked.”

Connor, who is the youngest of the siblings, had allegedly told the younger sister to, in the affidavit’s words, “sleep face down tonight so that he can take her to heaven and keep her from going to hell.”

Fearful he might hurt them, the rest of the family slept in shifts, deputies said.

The situation escalated Tuesday morning. They had planned to go on a cruise that day. The mother decided to miss it in order to arrange for Crumrine to stay at Charlotte Behavioral Health Care for mental health care.

She told him her plans, and he procrastinated getting ready, documents said. The mother asked the older sister to call the facility. While this sister was on the phone, she heard her mother scream, “he’s
stabbing me, he’s stabbing me.”

She found her brother stabbing their mother, documents said. The elder sister tried to disarm him, but this caused a minor laceration to her finger. The younger sister woke up to the sound of her mother calling for help, documents stated. She tackled Connor and wrestled with him over the knife, authorities wrote. The older sister worked on trying to save their mother’s life.

Deputies arrived to find Connor Crumrine struggling with the younger sister, who sustained a stab wound in the upper back, documents said.

“Connor still had the knife in his possession but was not actively using it at the time,” they wrote. “Connor was given multiple commands, which he ignored, and was ultimately tased, continued to be non compliant with law enforcement orders, and had to be physically removed from the bedroom, and detained on scene.”

First responders took Jennifer Crumrine to Fawcett Memorial Hospital, where she eventually died from her injuries, documents stated.

The defendant allegedly declined to speak post-Miranda and asked for an attorney. The court scheduled an arraignment for Jan. 29, records show.

Spridal Hubiak Other News

A 20-year-old Maine man was arrested in Arkansas over the weekend for allegedly killing a 52-year-old woman, fatally stabbing her inside of the liquor store where they both worked before fleeing the state.

Spridal Hubiak was taken into custody on Sunday morning and charged with murder in the slaying of Angela Bragg, authorities announced. According to Maine State Police, officers with the Waterville Police Depaertment at about 4:34 a.m. on Dec. 28 responded to a call about a dead body at Damon’s Beverage Waterville on Jefferson Street. The caller said that they were an employee at the store and had just walked in and found their co-worker dead inside.

Upon arriving at the scene, first responders found a deceased woman, later identified as Bragg, who appeared to have suffered multiple stab wounds. Waterville PD then requested the assistance of the state police’s Major Crimes Unit in investigating the murder.

An autopsy conducted by the Office of Chief Medical Examiner in Augusta, Maine’s capital city, determined that Bragg’s manner of death was a homicide and the cause of death was sharp force injury.

Investigators quickly named Hubiak as a person of interest in the case and issued a warrant for his arrest. In a Dec. 28 press release, police said they believed Hubiak, described as a white male in his early twenties with dark hair, had fled the state in a black 2010 Ford Taurus with a Maine license plate.

Hubiak remained on the run for several days until an officer with the Flippin Police Department spotted the black Taurus in a parking lot in the town of Flippin, Arkansas, more than 1,600 miles west of Waterville, Maine. Hubiak was said to be sleeping inside of the car when the officer made contact. A chase ensued.

Flippin Police and the Marion County Sheriff’s Office kept pursuit of Hubiak as he fled west on Highway 412 in the direction of Boone County.

“In response to the situation, Boone County deputies promptly intervened, collaborating with the Arkansas State Police to deploy spike strips. While the spike strips partially disabled the suspect’s vehicle, the pursuit persisted until reaching the intersection of Highway 65 and 412, where the driver pulled into a local private business,” the Boone County Sheriff’s Office wrote in a press release. “Upon exiting the vehicle, the suspect brandished an AR-style rifle, prompting a Boone County deputy to discharge their weapon, striking the suspect. Immediate action was taken as responding officers removed the injured suspect from the vehicle, and emergent first aid measures were initiated on-site.”

Hubiak was transported via ambulance to the North Arkansas Regional Medical Center for treatment. The medical staff was able to stabilize Hubiak, but due to the severity of his injuries, he was transported via Life Flight to a medical facility in Green County, Missouri. Authorities did not release additional details about the shooting or Hubiak’s condition other than to say that he “is expected to live.”

According to a report from Portland-area CBS affiliate WGME, Angela Bragg’s daughter posted a message to social media directed at Hubiak after news about the slaying broke

“My mother took you under her wing like a son. Brought you muffins, talked highly of you,” she reportedly wrote. “All for you to take her life and leave her there alone at night.”

Sophia Simmons News

An Arizona woman is accused of killing her daughter and dumping her body in a large trash can on Christmas Eve.

Sophia Simmons, 38, is facing multiple charges, including first-degree murder, child abuse and tampering with physical evidence, according to Phoenix police.

Phoenix police were called to the area around 8 p.m. on Dec. 24 after a man looking for firewood inside a dumpster found the body of a small child between the ages of five and seven stuffed inside a plastic storage tote, according to a probable cause statement obtained by PEOPLE.

The child had multiple injuries on her legs, arms and torso.

“Some of the injuries appeared to be open wounds and others were in multiple stages of healing and there were scars from previous injuries on her limbs and torso,” the document states.

The following day, police received a call from a tipster in New York who alleged they received a call from Simmons who allegedly “told the person that she had beaten her child and it went too far.”

Simmons allegedly told the tipster that after the beating she left her home and when she returned her daughter was not breathing, according to the statement. She allegedly told the tipster she tried CPR but she couldn’t revive her.

“Sophia then remained with the victim for the next five days before taking the victim to a dumpster and placing the victim in a dumpster,” according to the statement.

Phoenix officers reported surveilling Simmons’ townhouse and “it appeared that someone had been attempting to clean the townhouse,” the document states.

Police served a search warrant and discovered the home “appeared to have been emptied of its contents, the couches were in the patio and the cushions were missing.”

Simmons was later detained in Tonopah, Ariz. She is being held on a $1 million bond. A court appearance is scheduled for Jan. 2. It’s unclear if she has retained an attorney.

Phoenix police say a woman is accused of killing her daughter and putting the body in a dumpster on Christmas Eve.

At around 8 p.m. on Sunday, December 24, officers responded to the area of 31st and Grand avenues regarding a body that was found in a dumpster near a business. Officers determined the body was that of a “school-aged” girl.

A tip was received on Monday that 38-year-old Sophia Simmons placed the child’s body in a dumpster and that the child may have died from injuries during an assault by the suspect.

According to court documents, a witness was looking through a dumpster for firewood when they saw a storage tote with the lid partially opened. When the witness looked inside they reportedly saw a child’s body.

The witness alerted a nearby security guard who helped call the police. When Phoenix police officers and an official with the Medical Examiner’s Office arrived at the scene, they located the body of a girl believed to be between 5 and 7 years old.

The girl’s body appeared to have injuries to the legs, arms and torso, according to court documents. It also appeared to investigators that some of the wounds were in multiple stages of healing and there were scars from previous injuries.

On December 25, a witness in New York reported to police that they received a phone call from Simmons who claimed she had “beaten her child and it went too far.” The witness claims Simmons told her she left the house after beating the victim and when she returned the victim was not breathing.

According to the police report, Sophia Simmons remained with the victim’s body for the next five days before taking it to a dumpster where it was later found on December 24.

Detectives secured a search warrant for Sophia Simmons’ home near 51st Avenue and McDowell Road and found evidence of someone trying to clean a crime scene. At that time, Simmons was not home.

Authorities obtained a search warrant for Simmons’ phone records and learned her device was near Indio, California, and was headed back toward Arizona. Records state she was later stopped outside of Phoenix, near 411th Avenue and Interstate 10, and was taken to Phoenix Police Headquarters.

A review of her phone records showed Simmons’ device was in the area of the dumpster where the victim was found at around 10:30 a.m. on December 24.

She was booked into jail on multiple charges including first-degree murder, child abuse, and tampering with evidence.

According to an attorney during the initial court appearance, Simmons was involved in a prior case in another state involving a child, though details of that investigation were not immediately known.

The investigation is ongoing
