A potential “prolific serial killer” was arrested Friday in Orange County after he was connected to the deaths of two women over the last two months, according to Sheriff John Mina.

WKMG in Orlando reported that at a Monday morning news conference, Mina said 25-year-old Carlos Yadiel Baez Nieves was arrested in the deaths of Fatia Flowers, 41, and Nichole Daniels, 44, who were found dead in March and April, respectively.

“I’m very confident because of our detectives’ relentless efforts in this case that they stopped Baez Nieves from becoming a prolific serial killer,” Mina said. “He targeted women he clearly thought would not be missed.”

Mina said Flowers and Daniels were transients, and he offered them money for sex before strangling them and leaving their bodies by the side of the road near the same intersection.

Mina said deputies were able to catch Baez Nieves because he was trying to sell a white Ford F-150 pickup truck — the same pickup he was seen getting into at a gas station on North Econlockhatchee Trail the night before Flowers was found dead.

Mina said Baez Nieves confessed to the deaths. He’s being held without bond at the Orange County jail.

Carlos Yadiel Baez-Nieves More News

A 25-year-old Orange County man was behind bars Monday after being charged with two counts of first-degree murder in a case that Sheriff John Mina said could have been just the beginning of a “prolific serial killer.”

Carlos Yadiel Baez Nieves was identified as a suspect in the deaths of 41-year-old Fatia Flowers on March 4, and 44-year-old Nichole Daniels on April 17, Mina said.

According to detectives, both women were strangled to death and their bodies were dumped at the intersection of Trevarthon Road and Harrell Road — a location that was also not far from Baez Nieves’ home, Mina said.

“Carlos Yadiel Baez Nieves targeted the most vulnerable women,” Mina said. “Women who were transient, and who traded sex for money.”

While investigating the deaths, detectives were told by other witnesses in the area where Daniels was last seen alive that they had noticed a suspicious white pickup truck recently. Upon reviewing surveillance video, Mina said investigators found footage that showed Daniels getting into a “very distinctive white Ford F-150 pickup truck the night before she was found dead.”

According to investigators, Daniels was last seen alive at a gas station in the 1700 block of North Econlockhatchee Trail, while Flowers was last seen at a gas station in the 9300 block of East Colonial Drive.

According to an arrest affidavit in the case, license plate readers triggered at the time and in the area where Daniels was picked up helped investigators determine the vehicle’s license plate number.

While actively investigating the case, a truck matching the one seen in the security video was found backed into a driveway on Creek Avenue in Orlando — about 1.6 miles from the intersection where their bodies were found, the affidavit said.

The truck’s license plate matched the one collected by the license plate readers, investigators said.

The truck was later tied to Baez Nieves, who was actively trying to sell it, “no doubt to get rid of it and any evidence in the truck,” Mina said.

In fact, while being watched by detectives, Baez Nieves actually sold the truck to a couple for $3,200, the affidavit said. Deputies stopped the truck a short time later and spoke with the occupants, who confirmed they had just purchased it from Baez Nieves.

Investigators seized the vehicle and took it back to the Orange County Sheriff’s Office for processing.

That same day, Baez Nieves was pulled over by deputies and charged with driving on a suspended drivers license, and once in custody, he “ultimately confessed to the killing of both women,” Mina said.

According to the arrest affidavit, after some questioning, Baez Nieves admitted to picking up both women at different gas stations for the purpose of paying for sex.

He also allegedly admitted to strangling the women to death and dumping their bodies at the same intersection, saying that Daniels died while they were arguing about money, and Flowers during “rough sexual intercourse,” the affidavit said.

The sheriff said he was confident that due to “our detectives’ relentless efforts in this case, they stopped Baez Nieves from becoming a prolific serial killer.”

“He targeted women who he clearly thought would not be missed,” Mina said. “He murdered them and dumped their bodies on the side of the road like they were trash.

“Very, very grateful and thankful for our great detectives, who knew that Fatia’s and Nichole’s life were meaningful, and that they, of course, deserved justice like all of us.”

Mina said that due to the nature of the two Orange County murders, investigators are looking into any similar cases that Baez Nieves may have a connection to in Orange County, or other areas.

A suspect in the murder of Sheryl Turner, whose dismembered body was found in the Ouachita River in January has been arrested, authorities said.

Anthony Pierce Holland, Jr., 29, of West Monroe, is charged with second degree murder and booked into the Ouachita Parish jail, where he is being held without bond.

Turner’s torso was discovered by a hunter in the Ouachita River in Catahoula Parish on Jan. 24, and identified later via DNA. Turner was last seen by her family on Dec. 31, officials said. She sent a text message to her twin sister stating she had met someone in Ouachita Parish and was going to move there. Sheryl also sent a text message to a family friend saying that she had made it to West Monroe, and she would talk to him soon.

According to court documents, detectives learned that Holland made contact with the victim on Jan. 1 and picked her up from her mother’s residence in a black 2023 Toyota Corolla. Holland then returned to Ouachita Parish with the victim.

Phone records show the victim’s phone stopped transmitting on Jan. 2 at 11:26 p.m. The Catahoula Parish Sheriff’s Office learned that the victim’s phone was connected to wifi near Holland’s home on Trenton Street in West Monroe.

During the investigation, Holland’s vehicle was seen on traffic cameras in an area near the location where the body was found four days before the discovery of her body. According to court documents, medical examiners confirmed that the duration of time in which the remains were in the river was consistent with the timeframe when Holland’s vehicle was seen on the traffic cameras.

Stephan Sterns is an accused killer from Florida who has been charged with the murder of thirteen year old Madeline Soto

According to police reports Madeline Soto was reported missing just days after her thirteenth birthday. After an exhaustive four day search the teenagers body would be found

Stephan Sterns, who was the boyfriend of Madeline Soto mother, quickly became a suspect after he was arrested for sexual battery and possession of child sexual abuse material in the days after Madeline disappearance

The material police found on Stephan Sterns phone showed him abusing Madeline Soto when she was just eleven years old

Stephan Sterns has now been charged with first degree murder and the prosecutors are debating whether to seek the death penalty in this case

Stephan Sterns News

Stephan Sterns, the prime suspect in the death of 13-year-old Madeline Soto, has been charged with first-degree murder, records indicate.

According to documents obtained by WESH 2, Sterns has been charged in Madeline’s death.

A grand jury indicted Sterns early on Wednesday. Officials defended the amount of time it took to bring the murder charge against Sterns, saying officials were gathering every piece of evidence they could.

“The evidence shows an individual that was entrusted to keep Madeline safe made calculated moves to dispose Madeline’s belongings and place her body in a wooded area before she was ever reported missing,” Kissimmee Police Chief Betty Holland said.

State Attorney Andrew Bain said they have not decided if they will pursue the death penalty in this case, but those conversations will continue.

Officials emphasized that there are some facts about this case that cannot yet be shared. Once Stern’s attorney participates in discovery, more records can be made public, Homicide Unit Chief Will Jay said

Soto’s body was found in rural Osceola County on March 1 — five days after she was reported missing. Sterns, who is Madeline’s mother’s boyfriend, allegedly dropped her off near school on the day she went missing.

As the investigation developed, officials said this was never the case.

A few days after Soto went missing, OCSO found disturbing evidence on Stern’s phone and he was later charged with 60 counts related to sexual battery on a child and possession of sexual material.

News of Sterns facing murder charges came on the same day he did not show up for a scheduled hearing in court and the judge agreed to postpone the start of his trial for the sex crime charges.

Sterns is expected to go before a judge on Thursday or Friday for his first appearance on the first-degree murder charge.

Madeline goes missing:

Madeline Soto, 13, was first reported missing on Feb. 26. after her mother’s boyfriend, 37-year-old Stephan Sterns, said he dropped her off near her school.

When Soto’s mother went to pick her up at Hunters Creek Middle School around 4:30 p.m., she learned Soto had not been to school at all that day.

Arrest made:

On Feb. 28, just a few days before Madeline’s body was found, the Orange County Sheriff’s Office announced the arrest of Sterns for the disturbing evidence found on his phone during their investigation. He’s accused of sexually abusing Soto for years. Documents say the sexual abuse dates back to 2022.

Additionally, an affidavit from Kissimmee police revealed that Sterns attempted to factory reset his phone on the same day Soto went missing.

Because these alleged crimes took place at the family’s home in Kissimmee, the Kissimmee Police Department took over the investigation into the sexual battery.

On the morning of March 1, Sterns was transferred from the Orange County jail to the Osceola County jail.

All eyes on Sterns:

The day after his arrest, Orange County deputies said they believed Sterns had information regarding the disappearance of Soto, but he refused to answer any questions and requested an attorney.

This led detectives to believe Soto was never dropped off near her school.

Once the focus of the investigation changed, detectives started to gather more information about what happened on the morning of Feb. 26.

Investigators revealed they uncovered video of Sterns discarding items into a dumpster at the family’s Kissimmee apartment complex around 7:35 a.m. on Monday.

Soto’s backpack and school laptop were recovered from that dumpster.

Additionally, investigators said Sterns was spotted returning to the apartment complex around 8:19 a.m. with the teen in the car. According to OCSO, they believe Soto was already dead when Sterns was seen with her in the car.

Body found:

A few hours after officials said this evidence made them confident Soto was dead, the Osceola County Sheriff’s Office said they received a tip from someone who said they potentially saw involvement in the case.

This tip led search teams to a wooded area near Hickory Tree Road in St. Cloud. On March 1, officials confirmed they had located the body of Madeline Soto.

Because of developments in the case and where the body was found, Kissimmee police took charge of the investigation into the 13-year-old’s death.

“This is a sad day for our community and we mourn the loss of such a young life,” Kissimmee Police Chief Betty Holland said that night.

More charges:

On March 12, almost two weeks after Madeline’s body was found, a total of 60 new charges were filed against Sterns.

Sterns was charged with:

Eight counts of sexual battery on a child under 12.
Five counts of sexual battery with a child 12-18.
Seven counts of lewd and lascivious molestation.
40 counts of unlawful possession of materials depicting sexual performance by a child, 10 or more images.
