Colt Gray News

The Georgia teenager charged as an adult with killing four people at his high school made his first court appearance on Friday, and his father later appeared before the same judge on charges of enabling his son to obtain the rifle used in the shooting.

Suspected Georgia high-school shooter Colt Gray, 14, made his first appearance in state court, where he faces murder charges stemming from Wednesday’s rampage, which killed four people and wounded nine others.

Gray did not enter a plea in front of Barrow County Superior Court Judge Currie Mingledorff. He was being held without bond in the Gainesville Regional Youth Detention Center.
Mingledorff told Gray that he was charged with four counts of felony murder and that he could face life in prison if convicted by a jury. Gray was shackled as he sat next to his attorney and answered several of the judge’s questions with a nod.

The judge earlier told Gray he could face the death penalty, but later corrected himself, telling the youth he was not eligible for capital punishment given that he is younger than 18.
His father, Colin Gray, came before Mingledorff about 40 minutes after his son left the court. He has been charged with four counts of involuntary manslaughter, two counts of second-degree murder and eight counts of cruelty to children.

The 54-year-old was shackled and wearing a jail striped shirt and pants. He quietly answered a few questions by the judge and then spent most of the hearing rocking back and forth. The judge said the elder Gray faces up to 180 years in prison.
Georgia state and Barrow County investigators say Colt Gray used an “AR platform-style weapon,” or semiautomatic rifle, to carry out the attack at Apalachee High School, where two teachers and two 14-year-old students were killed.

One teacher and eight students were also wounded in the attack, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation said. Of those, the adult and six of the students were shot, the bureau said.
Colt Gray was arrested moments after the shooting by two sheriff’s deputies assigned to the school.
Investigators have yet to comment on what may have motivated the first mass shooting on a U.S. school campus since classes resumed at summer’s end.
The shooting in Winder, a city of 18,000 some 50 miles (80 km) northeast of Atlanta, revived both the national debate about gun control and the outpouring of grief that follows in a country where such attacks occur with some regularity.
Officials identified those killed as 14-year-old students Mason Schermerhorn and Christian Angulo and teachers Richard Aspinwall, 39, and Cristina Irimie, 53.

Samuel Harris News

Anthony Harrison, a senior at Kennesaw State University, said he woke up to the sound of gunshots at the Austin Residence Complex on campus.

“And all I can remember is just walking out and being completely horrified of what that scene was,” he told FOX 5 reporter Eric Mock.

Harrison said he had no idea the woman he was looking at as he called 911 was one of his dear friends, Alasia Franklin.

“I couldn’t even … I couldn’t even recognize the way she looked,” Harrison said, as he was brought to tears. “I couldn’t recognize the way she looked, man. I stood right over her as I was on the phone. Like, that’s something that’s going to be with me for a long, long, long time.”

Officers identified the suspected shooter as 21-year-old Samuel Harris. Details of what led up to the shooting have not yet been revealed, but Harris is facing multiple charges in Cobb County, including murder

Harrison told FOX 5 that he serves as the Vice President of the Student Government Association at KSU. Franklin, he said, served with him.

“I interviewed her and, I mean, from the moment that we hopped on the Zoom call and talked, I mean, she had a bright and amazing personality,” he remembered.

Franklin was also a member of KSU’s chapter of the National Council of Negro Women (NCNW) and founded the school’s Integrated Health Science Club.

“She was super involved on campus, and I know that everybody that knew her knew that she was just such a positive and outgoing person,” Harrison said. “She was just very passionate and driven all around, but it just … it just hurts to see her in the state that she was in. I mean, it’s just a lot.”

Harrison hoped this would serve as a wake-up call to university leaders.

“I think that this is a very, very, very strong indication that campus security needs to be increased,” he said. “We need more cameras. We need to have security gates around student housing to make sure that only students are allowed in student housing.”

FOX 5 Atlanta reached out to KSU officials about their thoughts on increasing safety on campus, but we have not heard back.

On top of a murder charge, Harris also faces aggravated assault and possession of a firearm during a crime.

Police would arrest Jose Ibarra who is an illegal alien from Venezuela who had been living in Georgia since crossing in El Paso Texas in 2022

Jose Ibarra News

University of Georgia police have arrested a man in the murder of Laken Riley.

Jose Antonio Ibarra, 26, who is not a U.S. citizen, but lives in the Athens area, was booked into the Clarke County Jail Friday evening.

Ibarra faces charges of malice murder, felony murder, aggravated battery, aggravated assault, false imprisonment, kidnapping, hindering a 911 call, and concealing the death of another.

The announcement came during a press conference Friday evening along with a few other details about what police are calling a “crime of opportunity.”

Laken Riley did not know her attacker, police say

University of Georgia Police Chief Jeff Clark says they are still trying to determine the motive behind the brutal murder of 22-year-old Laken Riley, whose body was discovered in the forested area behind Lake Herrick, after she failed to return from a run along a path near the Intramural Fields.

Investigators revealed on Friday evening that Riley died from blunt force trauma.

Police say they were able to link Ibarra to the murder through use of the campus security camera network and several witnesses. The chief also said other technology was also used, but did not elaborate.
Search warrant in murder of Laken Riley

Earlier in the day, three people were taken into custody and questioned, but only Jose Ibarra was arrested for Riley’s murder.

At the same time, a mobile command center at the Argo Apartments off Milledge Avenue near Lake Herrick and UGA was set up. Investigators were seen combing through an apartment and even the trash.

UGA police confirmed investigators are still searching the apartment, but say already, the evidence pointing to Ibarra is “robust.”

Jose Ibarra’s criminal history

Few details about Ibarra were released during Friday’s press conference. Chief Clark said there was no clear history of violence for the 26-year-old murder suspect and his criminal history is not extensive.

Ibarra is not a U.S. citizen, but his status in the country could not be immediately verified. Investigators say he came from Venezuela but did not offer his current immigration status in the U.S.

Chief Clark said evidence found at the apartment appears to show Ibarra acted alone.

The chief called this a “very isolated incident,” adding that this is the first homicide at UGA in at least 30 years.

It is not clear when Ibarra will be making his first appearance on those murder charges.

Anyone with information about the incident should call the UGA Police Department at 706-542-2200.
Jose Ibarra’s brother arrested for having fake green card

Diego Ibarra, 29, of Venezuela, was one of the men questions in the death of Laken Riley on Friday, the Department of Justice revealed.

He is the older brother of Jose Ibarra.

The United States Attorney’s Office Middle District of Georgia revealed the charges late Friday evening and said he will be prosecuted federally.

The elder Ibarra has a series of arrests in Athens, according to the DOJ.
