Scott Eizember is scheduled to be executed tonight, January 12 2023, by the State of Oklahoma for the murders of an elderly couple. According to court documents Scott Eizember would break into the elderly victim’s home and when they arrived home Eizember would murder the couple. After the double murder Scott Eizember would go on a multi state crime spree before finally being arrested. Scott Eizember who has never denied the double murder has been attempting to get his execution switched to life without parole.

Oklahoma plans to move forward with the execution of a man convicted of murdering an elderly couple Thursday after a parole board voted against granting him clemency.

Scott James Eizember, 62, is scheduled for lethal injection. He was convicted of the murders of A.J. Cantrell, 76, and Patsy Cantrell, 70, which he carried out in 2003. His attorneys do not contest Eizember’s guilt, but argue his life still has worth, The Associated Press reported.

“I make no excuses. I belong in prison,” Eizember told the parole board in December. “I’ve said that right from the start, and I apologize profusely to all the victims and when I say all, I mean the entire Creek County community.”

“He has felt remorse every day of his imprisonment. There is no reason to kill him next month other than revenge,” attorney Mark Henricksen said at the time.

Prosecutors say Eizember broke into the Cantrell’s home in order to more easily stalk his ex-girlfriend, who lived across the street. They allege Eizember waited for the couple to leave the home before entering, and that he murdered them when they came home unexpectedly.

Prosecutors say he shot Patsy with a shotgun and then used the shotgun to beat A.J. to death, though defense attorneys argued Patsy was shot while A.J. and Eizember struggled over the weapon, the AP reported.

Immediately after the killings, prosecutors said, Eizember entered the home of his ex-girlfriend, Kathryn Smith, and shot her son in the back and attacked Smith’s mother. Both survived the encounter and Eizember fled the scene, according to the AP.

Eizember wasn’t caught until months later. Authorities said he was attempting to travel to Arkansas by holding another couple at gun point and forcing them the drive him there. The husband was able to recover a pistol he had hidden inside his vehicle and shot Eizember four times before calling the police.

Scott Eizember was on death row for the 2003 murder of A.J. and Patsy Cantrell in Depew. The state said Eizember had been hiding in the Cantrell house, stalking their neighbor, who was his ex-girlfriend

When the Cantrells arrived home unexpectedly, Eizember struggled with them and Patsy was accidentally shot while A.J. was bludgeoned to death by Eizember. In the days after the attack, Eizember went on the run, even carjacking a couple before eventually being arrested in Texas.

“It was my solemn duty this morning to be present for the execution of Scott James Eizember, whose terrible crimes shattered a loving family and sentenced them to a lifetime of grief and loss,” Oklahoma Attorney General Gentner Drummond said in a news release. “After nearly 20 years, justice is served. I understand that nothing can ever lessen the pain of a loved one’s death, but I pray that today brings closure and some measure of peace to the Cantrell family.”

Eizember was the first of 10 death row inmates set to be executed this year in Oklahoma. One execution is scheduled for nearly every month of 2023.

Oklahoma’s next scheduled execution is on Feb. 16 for death row inmate Richard Glossip. Gov. Kevin Stitt has delayed Glossip’s execution twice in the past year, issuing executive orders to “allow time for the Oklahoma Court of Criminal Appeals to address pending legal proceedings.”

Richard Fairchild was executed by the State of Oklahoma for the murder of a three year old boy. According to court documents Richard Fairchild would murder his girlfriend’s 3-year-old son, Adam Broomhall. Adam Broomhall had severe burns on his back from being pushed against a heater. Apparently the three year old boy had wet his bed and Richard Fairchild attacked the child. Oklahoma executed a man Thursday for the torture slaying of his girlfriend’s 3-year-old son in 1993.

Richard Stephen Fairchild, who turned 63 on Thursday, began receiving the first of a lethal three-drug combination at 10:10 a.m. at the Oklahoma State Penitentiary in McAlester. He was declared dead at 10:24 a.m.

Fairchild, an ex-Marine, was convicted of killing Adam Broomhall after the child wet the bed. Prosecutors say Fairchild held both sides of Adam’s body against a scorching furnace, then threw him into a table. The child never regained consciousness and died later that day.

Strapped to a gurney inside the death chamber, Fairchild thanked his attorneys and prison staff and apologized to Broomhall’s family.

“Today’s a day for Adam, justice for Adam,” Fairchild said.

“I’m at peace with God. Don’t grieve for me because I’m going home to meet my heavenly father.”

Michael Hurst, the slain child’s uncle, said the boy would have been 34.

“Our long journey for justice has finally arrived,” Hurst said, adding that he was surprised to hear Fairchild express remorse for killing his nephew. “He hadn’t said that in 30 years.”

Prosecutors from the Oklahoma attorney general’s office had described the boy’s killing as torture when they wrote to the state’s Pardon and Parole Board, which voted 4-1 last month against recommending clemency for Fairchild.

Fairchild’s execution was the seventh since Oklahoma resumed carrying out the death penalty in October 2021 and one of four scheduled nationwide over a two-day stretch. It was the 16th execution in the U.S. this year, including one in Texas and one in Arizona on Wednesday, up from last year’s three-decade low of 11. An execution was also scheduled for later Thursday in Alabama. Oklahoma’s attorney general this summer asked the state’s top criminal appeals court to set more than two dozen execution dates.

Attorneys for Richard Fairchild argued that he was abused as a child, was mentally ill and was remorseful for his actions.

“As Richard Fairchild’s brain has deteriorated, he has descended into psychosis, a fact well-documented in his prison records,” Emma Rolls, one of Fairchild’s attorneys, said in a statement to the Pardon and Parole Board. “Yet despite having lost touch with reality, Richard remains remorseful for his crime and continues to have an unblemished prison record. There is no principled reason for Oklahoma to execute him.”

Fairchild’s attorneys filed last-minute appeals Wednesday with Oklahoma’s Court of Criminal Appeals and the U.S. Supreme Court, but both courts denied his requests Thursday morning.

Earlier Thursday, the Oklahoma Court of Criminal Appeals denied a request from death row inmate Richard Glossip for a hearing to determine whether a co-defendant sought to recant his testimony that Glossip hired him to kill motel owner Barry Van Treese.

Glossip’s attorneys allege evidence was withheld by prosecutors, including interviews with witnesses. The court rejected a similar request by Glossip earlier this month and on Thursday ruled that the matters are not eligible for review because they either were settled previously by courts, could have been presented in earlier appeals or were not raised within 60 days of their discovery.

Glossip is scheduled for execution in February.

The U.S. has seen waning support in recent years for the death penalty across all political parties. About 6 in 10 Americans favor the death penalty, according to the General Social Survey, a major trends survey conducted by NORC at the University of Chicago. While a majority continue to express support for the death penalty, the share has declined steadily since the 1990s, when nearly three-quarters were in favor.

George Ochoa was executed by the State of Oklahoma for a double murder committed during a robbery. According to court documents George Ochoa and Osvaldo Torres would force their way into a home and would shoot and kill the two homeowners, 38 year old Francisco Morales and his 35 year old wife, Maria Yanez. Both George Ochoa and Osvaldo Torres would be arrested, convicted and sentenced to death. Osvaldo Torres was granted clemency and was resentenced to life without parole. An Oklahoma death row inmate was executed Tuesday for the 1993 shooting deaths of an Oklahoma City couple.

George Ochoa, 38, was given an injection of lethal drugs at the Oklahoma State Penitentiary at McAlester less than a month after the state Pardon and Parole Board rejected Ochoa’s request that it recommend Gov. Mary Fallin reduce his death sentence to life in prison.

Ochoa is one of two men convicted of first-degree murder in the shooting deaths of Francisco Morales, 38, and Maria Yanez, 35. Investigators say Morales was shot 12 times and Yanez 11 times in their bedroom on July 12, 1993. The couple’s three children were inside the house at the time of the shootings.

Ochoa claimed he had been shocked and suffered injuries during his incarceration, but prosecutors said his claims of hallucinations and harm were likely an attempt to feign mental incompetence. Courts prohibit the execution of people who do not understand why they are being punished.

Officials said earlier psychological evaluations showed no evidence of delusions or hallucinations, and that claims about such didn’t start until he was charged.

Ochoa lost a late attempt at having his execution postponed when the U.S. Supreme Court on Tuesday denied his request for a stay. A federal appeals court on Monday rejected arguments that Ochoa was mentally unfit to be executed and a challenge to the state’s procedure for determining sanity.

Prosecutors said there was little evidence to suggest a motive for the killing, but no doubt that Ochoa and his co-defendant, Osbaldo Torres, 37, were responsible. Ochoa and Torres were stopped by police near the crime scene and were described by police as “sweating and nervous,” court records show.

Torres, a Mexican citizen, was also convicted of first-degree murder and sentenced to death in the shootings, but his sentence was reduced by then-Gov. Brad Henry in 2004. Henry imposed a sentence of life without parole after Mexican government officials raised concerns that Torres was not given a chance to speak with the Mexican consulate after being accused, as required by international conventions

An Oklahoma man who was put to death Tuesday evening despite claims that he was insane spent his final moments rambling about the presidential election and appeared startled when a prison official announced the start of the execution.

Garry Thomas Allen, 56, was executed for the 1986 killing of his fiancée, 24-year-old Lawanna Gail Titsworth, outside an Oklahoma City day-care center. His attorneys had argued that Allen should not be put to death because he could not understand the judgment against him.

Allen appeared confused moments after prison officials lifted a curtain separating the death chamber from witnesses. Slurring his words, Allen spoke for two minutes in an address that mentioned Barack Obama and Mitt Romney. His execution was held at 6pm Tuesday, one hour before polls closed in Oklahoma.

“Obama won two out of three counties,” Allen said. “It’s going to be a very close race.”

At 6:02pm, a prison official announced that the execution was about to begin.

“What? Huh?” Allen said.

When the drugs began to flow, Allen grunted several times and wiggled his feet. He was pronounced dead at 6:10pm.

Titsworth had moved out of the home she shared with Allen and their two sons four days before her death. Allen confronted Titsworth and shot her twice in the chest. She ran with a center employee toward the building, but Allen pushed the worker away, shoved Titsworth down some steps and shot her twice more in the back, according to court records.

Titsworth’s sister-in-law, Susan Titsworth, issued a statement after the execution, on behalf of the family.

“Our beloved Gail, daughter, sister and mother of two young boys, was taken from our family tragically and senselessly due to domestic violence,” the statement said. “For over 25 years, we have waited for justice to be served and for this sentence to be carried out. We are thankful to close the book on this chapter today but we will never stop grieving the loss of Gail.”

A police officer responding to a 911 call tussled with Allen before shooting him in the face, according to court documents. Allen was hospitalized for about two months with injuries to his face, left eye and brain. He entered a blind guilty plea to first-degree murder, meaning he had not reached a plea deal with prosecutors and did not know what the sentence would be. A judge sentenced him to die.

Allen’s attorneys argued he was not competent enough to enter the plea. They also contended he was mentally impaired when he killed Titsworth, that he had been self-medicating for a mental illness and that his mental condition became worse on death row. The US constitution forbids the execution of inmates who are insane or mentally incompetent.

A judge halted Allen’s original execution, on 19 May 2005, after a psychological examination at the prison indicated that Allen had mental problems. Three years later, a jury rejected Allen’s claim that he should not be put to death. The Oklahoma Pardon and Parole Board had voted in April 2005 to recommend that Allen’s death sentence be commuted to life without parole. That clemency recommendation was not acted on until this year, when Republican governor Mary Fallin denied it.

An Oklahoma death row inmate who tried to delay his execution by challenging the state’s lethal injection method was executed Tuesday evening just hours after the U.S. Supreme Court refused to step in.

Michael Hooper, convicted for the December 1993 shooting deaths of his former girlfriend and her two young children, received a lethal dose of drugs at the Oklahoma State Penitentiary in McAlester.

Hooper was sentenced to death for killing 23-year-old Cynthia Lynn Jarman and her two children, 5-year-old Tonya and 3-year-old Timmy. Prosecutors said the three were with Hooper in a pickup truck in a mowed field when he placed a 9mm pistol under Cynthia Jarman’s chin and shot her, then shot the children to prevent them from being witnesses.

Each of the victims was shot twice in the head, and their bodies were buried in a shallow grave in a field northwest of Oklahoma City.

In an effort to at least stall his execution, Hooper had sued the state last month claiming Okahoma’s three-drug lethal injection protocol was unconstitutional. The lawsuit sought to force the state to have an extra dose of pentobarbital, a sedative, on hand during his execution.

Pentobarbital is the first drug administered and is used to render a condemned inmate unconscious. It’s followed by vecuronium bromide, which stops the inmate’s breathing, then potassium chloride to stop the heart.

Hooper’s attorney had argued that if the sedative were ineffective, the remaining drugs could cause great pain in violation of the Eighth Amendment’s prohibition against cruel and unusual punishment. The lawsuit also noted that other states have adopted a one-drug process using a fast-acting barbiturate that supporters say causes no pain.

But the claims were rejected by a federal judge, then upheld by a federal appeals court. And the U.S. Supreme Court rejected Hooper’s request without elaboration earlier Tuesday.

Hooper was the fourth death-row inmate executed in Oklahoma this year.
