The estranged husband of a beloved Jersey City kindergarten teacher and mother found buried in a shallow grave has been arrested as a suspect in the homicide case, according to the victim’s family.

“An arrest has been made in connection with the death investigation of Luz Hernandez,” the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office wrote in a tweet on Friday.

The message promised “more to follow,” but did not identify the suspect or their alleged role in the death. The family of the teacher, however, told PIX11 News early Friday that Cesar Santana, the estranged husband of Hernandez, had been apprehended in Florida in connection with the case.

Jail officials in Miami-Dade County told PIX11 that Santana was being held as a fugitive from Hudson County, charged with concealing human remains.

Hernandez, a 33-year-old mom of three, was found in a shallow grave in a desolate industrial area of Kearny on Tuesday, one day after she unexpectedly failed to show up for work at the BelovED Community Charter School.

Her death was deemed a homicide on Thursday. Investigators found evidence of blunt force trauma to her head, as well as compressions to her neck.

Relatives on Thursday had called for Santana to come forward to answer questions, saying that he would have been one of the last people to see Hernandez alive while visiting their three kids — ages 3, 9, and 12 — on Saturday morning. Two of the children are students at the school where their mother taught.

El Paso Shooter Patrick Crusius Sentenced To 90 Life Terms

Patrick Crusius

Patrick Crusius is the man responsible for a mass shooting at an El Paso Texas Walmart that left twenty three people dead and many injured back in 2019. Now Patrick Crusius has plead guilty to ninety Federal charges including 23 counts of hate crime that resulted in death and 22 counts of hate crime that resulted in severe injury. Patrick Crusius was quickly sentenced to ninety life sentences that are to be served consecutively meaning he will never be free again. Patrick Crusius agreed to plea guilty to the charges after Federal prosecutors took the death penalty off of the table

Patrick Crusius More News

A Texas man pleaded guilty Wednesday to federal hate crime and weapons charges in the racist attack at an El Paso Walmart in 2019, which prosecutors say was preceded by the gunman posting an online screed that warned of a “Hispanic invasion.”

Patrick Crusius, 24, showed little emotion while shackled in an El Paso courtroom just a few miles from the store where he was accused of killing 23 people, including citizens of Mexico, in what remains one of the worst mass shootings in U.S. history.

Sentencing is not scheduled until later this year, but the U.S. government had previously announced it wouldn’t seek the death penalty. Crusius waived most of his rights to appeal on a total of 90 federal charges, which U.S. District Judge David Guaderrama said would each carry a life sentence.

“I plead guilty,” he said.

Crusius had originally pleaded not guilty before federal prosecutors took the death penalty off the table. He could still receive the death penalty, however, under separate state capital murder charges in Texas, although it remains unclear when that case might go to trial.

Albert Hernandez, whose sister and brother-in-law were killed in the attack, was one of about 40 people with close ties to the victims in the court gallery. He called Crusius a coward who was trying to “save his own skin” by pleading guilty in federal court.

“This guy knew what he was doing. It was premeditated,” Hernandez said of the shooting. “He came here to take care of business.”

Crusius surrendered to police after the massacre, saying, “I’m the shooter, ” and that he was targeting Mexicans, according to court records. Prosecutors have said he drove more than 10 hours from his hometown near Dallas to the largely Latino border city and published a document online shortly before the shooting that said it was “in response to the Hispanic invasion of Texas.”

The Aug. 3, 2019, shooting happened on a busy weekend at a Walmart that is typically popular with shoppers from Mexico and the U.S. In addition to those killed, more than two dozen were injured, and hundreds more were scarred by being present or having a loved one hurt.

Prosecutors presented a detailed narrative of the attack during Wednesday’s plea hearing, describing how it began with a pedestrian gunned down in the parking lot before Crusius, wearing earmuffs that mute the sound of gunfire, opened fire at people at a fundraiser for a soccer team.

As Crusius moved inside the store, prosecutors said, nine people were cornered and shot to death at a bank near the entrance. Among them were husband and wife Jordan and Andre Anchondo, whose infant son survived with broken bones in a hand.

It’s also where gunfire cut down Margie Reckard, whose August 2019 funeral drew thousands of sympathizers from as far away as California and across the border in Mexico – after her husband announced that he was alone with almost no family left and invited the world to attend.

The killing continued as Crusius fired his assault rifle down multiple aisles, according to prosecutors. Exiting Walmart, he fired on a passing car, killing an elderly man and wounding his wife.

Former El Paso Mayor Dee Margo attended the plea hearing and called it a “gut-wrencher.”

“We have an evil white supremacist who showed up and attacked us for who we are,” he said.

After the hearing, defense attorney Joe Spencer said Crusius wanted to accept responsibility. “There are no winners in this case,” he said.

Prosecutors say Crusius consented after surrendering to two videotaped interviews with detectives and the FBI on Aug. 3 and providing two thumb drives that contained his racist writings and other records.

Crusius’ writings before the shooting echoed both the anti-immigration rhetoric of American politics and racist screeds put out by other mass shooters in the U.S. and abroad.

More than three years after the shooting, the description of an “invasion” on the U.S.-Mexico border has continued in American politics. Critics have condemned the characterization as anti-immigrant and dangerous in the aftermath of El Paso and other racially motivated attacks.

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott, a Republican, has recently embraced using the word “invasion” while authorizing a series of hardline immigration measures. In November, Abbott sent a letter to state police and the Texas National Guard with the subject line “Defend Texas Against Invasion.”

Abbott has defended his statements by saying he is invoking language included in the U.S. Constitution. Some legal scholars have called it a misreading of the clause.

“If this is not an invasion, what is it?” Abbott asked CNN’s Jake Tapper during an interview last month. “Think about the volume of people coming across the border.”

America’s Voice, an immigration reform group, said it tracked more than 80 Republican candidates during last year’s midterm elections who amplified what they called “invasion” and “replacement” conspiracies.

“I think it’s been creeping over the years,” said Zachary Mueller, political director of America’s Voice. “What I would say is that in 2021, there was a marked shift where it went from the fringes of the Republican Party into the mainstream of the Republican Party.”

A database of mass killings in the U.S. since 2006 compiled by The Associated Press, USA Today, and Northeastern University shows that the number of deadly mass shootings linked to hate crimes has increased in recent years. Among 13 prominent instances, the 2019 Walmart shooting was the deadliest. The database tracks every mass killing – defined as four dead, not including the offender – in the U.S. since 2006.

Julissa Thaler Guilty Of Murder Of 6 Year Old Son

Julissa Thaler

Julissa Thaler is a woman from Minnesota who was just convicted in the brutal murder of her six year old son. According to court documents Julissa Thaler would fatally shoot her six year old son in her car. She would then put the body of Eli Hart in the trunk of the car and proceeded to drive around with it inside. Ultimately Julissa Thaler would be pulled over for driving on the rim of her car and when officers would look in the trunk they would find the body of Eli Hart. Julissa Thaler would be arrested and ultimately convicted. Julissa Thaler will be sentenced later this month where she faces an automatic life sentence.

Julissa Thaler More News

Minnesota mother was convicted Wednesday of murdering her 6-year-old son in 2022 and driving with his body in the trunk of her car.

Julissa Thaler, 28, of Spring Park, was on trial for shooting her son, kindergartner Eli Hart, nine times with a shotgun inside her sedan, say prosecutors.

On Wednesday, a jury found her guilty of one count each of first-degree premeditated murder and second-degree murder after deliberating for two hours, Kare 11CBS Minnesota and the Star Tribune report.

She automatically received a life sentence without parole for the premeditated murder conviction, KARE 11 reports.

“On behalf of Eli’s family, Tory Hart would like to thank the jury, the court, the Hennepin County Attorney’s Office and justice partners for their good work,” Eli’s father, Tory Hart, said in a statement, KARE 11 reports. “This is a tragic and heartbreaking event that could have been avoided if Eli had never been returned to a dangerous home.”

The murder came to light on May 20, 2022, when police in Orono pulled Thaler over after she was spotted driving her sedan on a bare metal rim without one of its tires and with a shattered a rear window.

Officers said they noticed blood inside the car.

Later, when they looked in the trunk of her car, they found her son’s body inside, say police.

Thaler was arrested shortly after and initially charged with second-degree murder.

After turning down two offers from prosecutors to plead guilty to second-degree murder, including on Jan. 30, her charges were upgraded to first-degree murder, Fox 9 reported.

“I would never do that to my son,” she said in court on Jan. 30 when rejecting the plea deal, Fox 9 reported. “I want to go to trial.”

Jury selection began on Jan. 30. Opening statements began Friday and closing statements were made Wednesday morning.

During his testimony on Friday, Hart said his son was popular at his elementary school and dreamed of becoming a firefighter.

“He was always really happy, outgoing, always full of energy, always,” Hart testified, Fox 9 reports.

During the trial, jurors heard about how the upbeat, well-liked kindergartner spent his final hours.

Thaler’s ex-boyfriend, Robert Pikkarainen, testified that on the night of May 19, 2022, she let Eli stay up late and then grew frustrated when he became rowdy, KARE 11 reports.

She was hitting him,” he testified. “Then Eli was hitting her and they were fighting.”

He said she briefly left her apartment, put her shotgun into her car, returned and “grabbed Eli and went downstairs,” KARE 11 reports.

When he woke up the next day and asked her where she went, she gave a vague answer. “She was kind of like, ‘I had to go do something,'” he testified.

Thaler was fighting for custody of Eli with Hart when the boy was killed, according to court records obtained by PEOPLE.

She lost custody of Eli in Jan. 2021 after the Dakota County Social Services Department learned that she was “presenting with psychosis and hearing voices telling her to kill herself,” court documents show, the Star Tribune reported.

According to a GoFundMe campaign organized to help cover Eli’s funeral costs, the boy spent 11 months living with extended family members. But in December 2021, a judge allowed Eli to return to his mother’s care for a home trial.

“Due to many red flags Eli’s mother was showing, Tory tried extremely hard to get custody of Eli,” the fundraiser description said. “Numerous parties made many statements to CPS, fearing that mom would harm Eli if full custody were returned. Sadly, full custody was returned on May 10, 2022.”

Authorities noted that Julissa Thaler “bought a shotgun and learned how to use it” shortly after Hart filed papers asking the court for full custody, the Star Tribune reported.

Shortly afterward, she allegedly went to a shooting range with a friend to learn how to fire the gun, Fox 9 reported.

After the verdict, Hennepin County Attorney Mary Moriarty released a statement saying, “Eli’s brutal murder is one of the most horrific cases I have encountered in 30 years working in the criminal legal system.

“Nothing will ever fill the emptiness Eli’s father and other loved ones now live with every day, but I’m hopeful this verdict will make it just a bit easier to remember Eli as the toothless, happy, smiling little boy we have seen in photos.”

Julissa Thaler is scheduled to return to court for sentencing on Feb. 16.

Her attorney did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s requests for comment.

Julissa Thaler Sentencing

A mother will spend the rest of her life in jail for the murder of her six-year-old son, Eli Hart.

A judge sentenced Julissa Thaler to life without parole on Thursday.

Last year, police found her son shot to death in the trunk of her car.

A few days before the child was killed, Dakota County Social Services granted Thaler custody of Eli.

Eli’s dad, Tory Hart, and his wife, Josie Josephson, detailed to the judge how much it hurt to lose him.

“No one should ever have to feel this kind of pain or trauma, but we have been sentenced to a lifetime of this pain. Confusion, grief, sorrow and trauma. A lifetime without Eli,” Josephson said.

Orono Police arrested Thaler for the child’s death in May 2022.

Eli’s family says they hope to begin healing while carrying out his legacy.

The family has started a foundation in Eli’s honor and are fundraising for a playground.

They hope the playground won’t honor only Eli, but all kids who deserve to have a happy childhood.

Josephson and Hart have an active civil lawsuit against Dakota County Social Services

Pierre Ny St-Amand Charged With Murder In Laval Bus Crash

Pierre Ny St-Amand

Pierre Ny St-Amand is a city bus driver in Laval Quebec who has been charged with 2 counts of murder for a crash that killed two young children. According to police reports Pierre Ny St-Amand was driving a city bus when he slammed into a daycare in Laval Quebec leaving 2 children dead and many more injuries. According to witnesses Pierre Ny St-Amand was driving between 30 to 40 kilometres per hour (approx 23 mph) when he slammed into the day care. Pierre Ny St-Amand would emerge from the bus completely naked and described as being out of his mind. Pierre Ny St-Amand has worked for the city for 10 years with no driving incidents.

Pierre Ny St-Amand More News

Two children are dead and six others were injured after a city bus crashed into a daycare on Wednesday morning in Laval, Que.

The driver, a 51-year-old man who was employed with the Société de transport de Laval (STL), was arrested and is facing reckless driving and homicide charges. Several sources told Radio-Canada that the suspect is Pierre Ny St-Amand.

Around 8:30 a.m., a bus from the Société de transport de Laval (STL) hit a daycare in the Sainte-Rose neighbourhood on Terrasse Dufferin, according to Laval police spokesperson Erika Landry. Landry said two children are confirmed dead and six others are injured and in hospital, but they are expected to survive.

The Garderie Éducative de Sainte-Rose is located on that street.

A neighbour who witnessed the crash said he and a group of parents tried to rescue children pinned under the bus and managed to subdued the driver, who was acting erratically.

According to Urgences-santé, 12 people needed medical care, eight others were transported to area hospitals.

Dr. Marc Girard, the director of professional services at Sainte-Justine Hospital, said at an afternoon news conference that the hospital received four victims, all preschool-age children, two boys and two girls.

The children were conscious when they arrived at the hospital, but were suffering from various traumatic injuries, Girard said. They are now recovering and in stable condition, he said.

Hamdi Ben Chaabane, who lives in the neighbourhood and witnessed the crash, said the bus was travelling 30 or 40 kilometres per hour when it struck the daycare.

“From what I saw, it wasn’t an accident,” he said.

After the bus struck the daycare, the driver emerged and began acting erratically.

“He opened the door. He took off all his clothes. He was totally naked,” Ben Chaabane said. “We don’t know why he did that. We dove on him. We tried to subdue him.”

He described the driver as being “in another world.”

“It was a nightmare. It’s horrible. He didn’t stop yelling. He wasn’t saying words,” Ben Chaabane said.

When the group tried to pry children out from underneath the bus, Ben Chaabane said they reached one child, who was only lightly injured, but were unable to reach a girl who was stuck deeper beneath rubble.

He said they continued trying to reach the trapped children until firefighters arrived and told them to leave because the roof of the daycare was caving in.

According to the Stéphane Boyer, the mayor of Laval, the person who was arrested has worked for the STL for 10 years  but didn’t have any prior incidents on his record.

“There is a hypothesis that this was an intentional act but it will have to be confirmed by the investigation,” Boyer said, adding that it was unclear if the suspect had any connection to the daycare.

“It’s chaos,” said Julia Moreno, a mother whose child was in the daycare when the bus struck it. “There are injured children. It’s terrible.”

Nathalie Vaillancourt, another mother whose child was inside, said the bus destroyed the front facade of the daycare. Both mothers said their children were unscathed.

City buses don’t normally drive past the daycare, which is on a quiet side street, with no STL bus stops.

Urgences-santé dispatched seven ambulances, a “tactical medical vehicle” — which responds to unusual medical situations, often alongside police — and a rapid response team.

“It’s terrible what happened this morning in Laval,” Premier François Legault told a group of reporters at the National Assembly. “All my thoughts are with the children, with the parents and with the employees.”

Legault said Public Security Minister François Bonnardel, Family Minister Suzanne Roy and Christopher Skeete, the MNA for the Sainte-Rose riding, will be in Laval to assess the situation.

Laval’s mayor said psychologists would be available for those affected.

“It’s a tragic act,” Boyer said. “Obviously there are lots of parents right now wondering if their child was affected. I really want to be there for the families, show support.”

The STL said in a statement it was devastated by the “tragedy in Laval.”

“Our hearts go out to the families and employees affected by this tragedy,” the statement said. “The Service de police de la Ville de Laval is currently conducting an investigation in which we are actively collaborating.”

Swim Coach Daniel Barillaro Jr Charged With Voyeurism

Daniel Barillaro Jr

Daniel Barillaro Jr was an assistant swim coach at Platt High School in Meriden Connecticut who was just arrested for attempting to film a student changing. According to police reports the student noticed that Daniel Barillaro Jr was attempting to film them and would notify authorities. Police would investigate and Daniel Barillaro Jr would be charged with voyeurism. A search of Daniel Barillaro Jr electronics did not reveal any more videos. Needless to say Daniel Barillaro was placed on leave by the school board

Daniel Barillaro Jr More News

Police say a 23-year-old O.H. Platt High School coach has been accused of recording a student while they were changing in the bathroom.

Daniel Barillaro Jr. turned himself in on Tuesday after a warrant had been issued for his arrest, Meriden police said. Barillaro was charged with voyeurism after police said a student said he recorded them with his cellphone inside a school bathroom.

He was released on $5,000 bond and is due to appear in state Superior Court in Meriden on Feb. 22.

Police said Barillaro was placed on leave from the Meriden school district after the student reported the incident. The school district’s website lists Barillaro as an assistant swim coach.

“The Meriden Police Department would like to acknowledge the bravery of this student to come forward and report this incident,” Lt. Darrin McKay said in a news release Wednesday.

Police did not say what team Barillaro coaches or whether he is also a teacher at the school. Police also did not release the age or gender of the victim.

McKay said the department’s Special Crimes Unit began investigating the voyeurism allegation last month after the student reported the incident to school officials.

The student said they “observed a cellular phone recording in a bathroom while they were getting prepared to change after practice,” McKay said in Wednesday’s news release.

Police said they identified Barillaro as a suspect and seized his phone. Police said a review of his phone revealed “no additional acts of voyeurism” or other victims, the news release said.
