A mother was arrested and charged after a 10-month-old was stabbed and killed in Barnardsville on Thursday, March 26, the Buncombe County Sheriff’s Office said.
Just after 2 p.m., the sheriff’s office, Barnardsville Fire Department and Buncombe County EMS responded to a stabbing call on Rocala Drive in Barnardsville, a press release said.
When first responders arrived, they found the 10-month-old with multiple stab wounds, the BCSO said.
“It strikes us to the core. Let me just say that. When I say it strikes us to the core, a 10-month-old deceased and at the hands of the mother,” said Buncombe County Sheriff Quentin Miller.
The sheriff’s office said the baby was taken to Mission Hospital, where he died.
“This touches people in a different manner. It touches us in a different way. The fact that it touches us different, we must do different,” said Miller.
The BCSO said the baby’s mother, Ciara Frederick, 34, was arrested and charged with the following:
First-degree murder
Assault with a deadly weapon, 2 counts
“Our hearts and thoughts are with everyone impacted by this tragedy. Members of the Barnardsville Fire Department and Buncombe County EMS did everything they could to save this child’s life, and for that, we are grateful. Our hearts are broken,” Miller said in the press release.
So far, the sheriff isn’t saying if anyone else was home when the incident happened. Miller did confirm that the baby’s father also lives at that address.
Miller added that the devastating case also speaks to some of the isolation and distance that many of us face, not just from living in rural areas, but from a lack of compassion, too. He explained that it’s gotten worse after Helene.
“I don’t know that we take care or check on each other the way we did during the storm,” Miller said.
The pain and loss of this tragedy runs deep as a family and a community coming to terms with this. Those on Thursday’s scene who were first to arrive were hit especially hard, too.
“The Barnardsville Fire Department, they responded. The EMS folks responded, and that’s very challenging and tough on them, but it’s also tough on my deputies. So, we’re trying to set stuff up that they can go, because we’re concerned about their mental health,” Miller said.
