Vultures hovering near suitcases on a desolate stretch of highway in Florida led to the chilling discovery of human remains — and to the arrest of a 19-year-old man, police said.
On Saturday, March 28, officers with the Palm Bay Police Department responded to a call about an abandoned closed suitcase at 1574 Bombardier Boulevard in Palm Bay surrounded by vultures, the department said in a statement.
Upon arrival, officers found a black suitcase sitting in tall grass that emitted a strong odor, according to the arrest affidavit obtained by PEOPLE.
Inside the suitcase were what was later confirmed to be human remains along with personal belongings and an Amazon package addressed to Lucas Sander Jones, 19, of Indialantic, the affidavit alleges.
A second suitcase, which also contained human remains, was later found nearby, the affidavit alleges.
Lucas Jones became an immediate person of interest, police allege in the statement.
Lucas Jones, detectives soon learned, was associated with Colie Lee Daniel, 28, of Shannon Ave. in Indialantic, who had been reported missing six days earlier by his mother, according to the affidavit.
Shortly after, detectives executed a search warrant at Jones’ residence on Watson Drive in Indialantic, where they found Jones and his girlfriend.
Lucas Jones had visibly healed wounds and bruises on his left shoulder and the right side of his neck and invoked his right not to speak to police, the affidavit alleges.
The girlfriend told investigators that on Friday, March 20, she observed Daniel lying on Jones’ bed, with Jones trying to wake him.
Upon returning from the bathroom, she told officers, she said Daniel was no longer inside the residence and that Jones told her that Daniel left through the back door, the statement alleges.
On March 21, Jones “instructed” his girlfriend to drive him to the area of Bombardier Boulevard in Palm Bay known as the “Compound,” police allege.
There, she said she saw Jones remove two gray totes from her Honda Accord and discard them in separate locations — but stated she did not know what was inside, police allege.
She did not remember seeing two black suitcases but believed they were also discarded at the “Compound,” police allege in the affidavit.
Blood stains and a knife were found inside the defendant’s residence, police allege in the affidavit.
On March 28, Jones was arrested and charged with tampering with evidence, abuse of a dead human body and improper disposal of human remains, which were later positively identified as those of Daniel, police said in the statement. He was released after posting a $7,500 bond on March 29, per court records.
After detectives continued the investigation, conducted additional interviews and processed evidence at the scene, probable cause was established for a murder charge, police allege.
On Tuesday, April 1, investigators executed another search warrant at the Watson Drive residence, where Jones was taken into custody without incident.
Online court records show he is charged with first-degree murder dangerous depraved without premeditation. A judge ordered him remanded into state custody.
It is unclear how Jones and Daniel knew each other.
His attorney did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment. Jones has not entered a plea and was set to be arraigned on April 21, but the hearing has since been cancelled.
