An 18-year-old accused of committing Albuquerque’s first homicide of 2026 will remain in custody for now.
Prosecutors say the suspect, Peyton Reagan, is too dangerous to be let out into the community. They have filed a motion for him to be held in jail, a decision that will be made later in District Court.
Just hours into the new year, Albuquerque police say a man was shot and killed near Gold Avenue and 8th Street.
Police report that Reagan was seen running with what appeared to be a rifle just before 3 a.m. on New Year’s Day. They later discovered the victim, 25-year-old Alexander Wilson, shot dead nearby.
Reagan faces charges of murder, tampering with evidence and attempted robbery.

Homicide detectives from the Albuquerque Police Department have formally charged Peyton Reagan for the deadly shooting overnight of a man in Downtown Albuquerque.
Around 2:53 AM, officers responded to gunshots and spotted a man, later identified as Reagan, an 18-year-old, running westbound on Gold Avenue toward 8th Street. Reagan appeared to be carrying a rifle. Officers apprehended Reagan at the intersection of 8th St SW and Gold Ave SW. There was a firearm on the ground near a bush where he was taken into custody.
Officers searched the area where Reagan was fleeing from and found a blue Ford parked facing westbound on Gold Ave, between 7th St and 8th St. They located the victim, Alexander Wilson, who had sustained multiple gunshot wounds. Wilson, 25, died at the scene.
Around 3:10 AM, AFR was dispatched back to the scene after Reagan complained of trouble breathing. He was transported to a local area hospital.
APD’s civilian PIO Gilbert Gallegos says Reagan was later taken to APD’s Main police station, and he was booked into the Metro Detention Center. Reagan has been charged with an open count of first-degree murder, conspiracy to commit first-degree murder (felony murder), tampering with evidence, and armed robbery.
The investigation into the shooting is on-going.
