The teen girl charged with murder in the fatal stabbing of her friend’s mother in New Carlisle a year ago pleaded guilty on Thursday

Natasha Ellis, 15 at the time, was accused along with her then 13-year-old friend of orchestrating an attack on the younger girl’s family.

Ellis, now 16, was also charged with attempted murder. She pleaded guilty to both charges Thursday afternoon in Clark County Common Pleas Court. She will be sentenced on July 10.

The now 14-year-old is awaiting trial as a juvenile.

Ellis faces 15 years to life on the murder charge and 11 to 16½ years on for attempted murder. Once sentenced she will serve out her time in an adult prison after a psychological expert found earlier this year “there was not sufficient time to rehabilitate” her in the juvenile system.

Ellis had maintained her innocence up until Thursday. During her plea hearing, she hesitated when Clark County Common Pleas Judge Douglas Rastatter asked her if she understood that by signing the plea agreement she was waiving her right to a trial.

She asked Rastatter if she could speak with her lawyer before answering and he agreed to a short recess. After speaking briefly with her lawyer, she agreed that she wanted to proceed with accepting the plea agreement.

Ellis had previously pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity to the charges on Dec. 27, according to online court records. But on Feb. 25, she was found competent to stand trial after a competency evaluation at Eastway Behavioral Healthcare in Dayton found she was “not intellectually disabled or mentally ill.”

“She is currently able to understand the nature and objective of the legal proceeding and can assist in her defense,” online court records from the evaluation said. “Therefore, the court finds her competent to stand trial.”

Ellis was accused of carrying out an attack on her friend’s family members on May 23, 2019, at a home on North Church Street in New Carlisle. The friend’s mother, Lee A. Moore, 36, died in the attack. The younger girl’s father and then 17-year-old brother also were hurt, but survived.

As a result of her plea agreement, two additional charges of aggravated murder and felonious assault against Ellis were dropped. She also agreed to testify against the now 14-year-old if her case goes to trial.

Clark County prosecutors declined to comment on Ellis’ plea after the hearing, citing the fact that she has not yet been sentenced and that the 14-year-old’s case remains ongoing. Ellis’ attorney, John Meehling, also declined to comment.

Clark County sheriff’s deputies have said previously that even though Ellis may have acted alone during the attack, the planning of the attack was done in unison with the other teen.

In an interrogation video shown in a July hearing, Ellis told an investigator the 13-year-old left weapons out in the home in certain places for her to use in the stabbing. At the same hearing, a deputy told the court that Ellis told her the night of the attack the two girls were in communication up until moments before the stabbing happened.

The 14-year-old has been charged as a serious youthful offender — which could result in a mixture of juvenile and adult sentences down the line.

One of the teen girls accused in a plotting a fatal stabbing in New Carlisle has pleaded guilty in the case.

Natasha Ellis, now 16, pleaded guilty to murder and attempted murder charges in a plea deal with the Clark County Prosecutor’s Office.

Ellis has been charged as an adult and originally was indicted on charges of aggravated murder, murder, attempted murder and felonious assault – but the first and last count of the indictment were dropped as part of the deal.

In addition, Ellis has also agreed to testify against her teenage co-defendant – whose case is still going through the court system in Clark County Juvenile Court.

The charges that Ellis have pleaded to carry a heavy penalty. She could potentially be in prison for the rest of her life for the crime. The murder charge alone carries a mandatory sentence of at least 15 years behind bars.

In May 2019, prosecutors say Ellis and her then 13-year-old friend plotted to kill the 13-year-old’s family, even though Ellis was the one to carry out the act.

The 13-year-old’s mother, Lee Ann Moore, was stabbed and later died.

The teen’s brother and father were also attacked, but survived.

Ellis previously made a claim in an interview with the Clark County Sheriff’s Office that her friend was being abused and killing the family was the only solution to end it, but that claim has not been verified.

Ellis is scheduled to be sentenced on July 10

The New Carlisle teen girl who pleaded guilty to fatally stabbing her friend’s mother a year ago will serve at least 22 years in an adult prison as a result of her crimes.

Natasha Ellis, who was 15 at the time of the crimes, was accused of orchestrating an attack with her then 13-year-old friend on the younger girl’s family.

Ellis was given her prison sentence by Judge Douglas Rastatter in Clark County Common Pleas Court on Friday morning. She pleaded guilty to murder and attempted murder on June 11. As a result of her plea, two additional charges of aggravated murder and felonious assault were dropped.

She also agreed to testify against the now 14-year-old friend, if her case goes to trial. Clark County sheriff’s deputies have said previously that even though Ellis may have acted alone during that attack, the planning was done in unison with the other teen

The younger girl has been charged as a serious youthful offender, which could result in a mixture of juvenile and adult sentences down the line, and she is awaiting trial in Clark County Juvenile Court.

Ellis was accused of carrying out an attack on her friend’s family members of May 23, 2019, at a home on North Church Street in New Carlisle. The friend’s mother, Lee A. Moore, 36, died in the attack. The younger girl’s father, Paul Greear, and then 17-year-old brother were also hurt, but survived.

Prior to the sentence being handed down, Ellis read a statement directed at Greear and his son — who were in the courtroom but did not look at Ellis as she spoke.

“I want you to know I’m sorry for everything that happened to you and your family. I’m sorry for the attack on you,” Ellis said as she started to cry. “I’m also sorry for all the trauma that everyone had to deal with that night. I know you hate me and probably wish I would stop talking right now, but I just want you to know how I feel.”

Ellis said she “never wanted anyone to get hurt.”

“I know you will never forgive me, but just know I’m very sorry,” Ellis said. “I’m so sorry for everything.”

Greear spoke to the court after Ellis. He pleaded with Rastatter to “keep her in there as long as you possibly can.”

“Because she will do it again. She will offend again,” Greear said.

Rastatter sentenced Ellis to 15 to years to life for her murder charge, which was the maximum sentenced possible. For her attempted murder charge, Rastatter took over 10 minutes to hand down a sentence of seven to 10 years. The maximum sentence for the charge in the state of Ohio is 11 to 16 ½ years.

The sentences will be served consecutively, meaning Ellis will serve a minimum of 22 years in prison for her crimes.

“I believe that concurrent sentences would demean the seriousness of these offenses. I think it would be a miscarriage of justice for Mr. Greear because essentially the court would be saying what happened to him was irrelevant,” Rastatter said. “The two offenses committed here were committed as part of a course of conduct, and the harm caused was so great that no single prison term adequately reflects the seriousness of her conduct.”

Ellis, now 16, will serve her time in an adult prison after a psychological expert found earlier this year “there was not sufficient time to rehabilitate,” her in the juvenile system.

A local teenager was sentenced to life in prison without the eligibility of parole for the brutal murder of an 98-year-old Wadsworth woman.

Gavon Ramsay, 17, was charged with aggravated murder, two counts of murder, one count of aggravated burglary, one count of kidnapping and one count of gross abuse of a corpse in connection for the April 2018 murder of Margaret Douglas.

Douglas was discovered in a closet of her Wadsworth home after she had been reported missing. Investigators determined she had been strangled, her body concealed in a pile of clothing.

During sentencing, Medina County Common Pleas Judge Joyce Kimbler ruled the teen was corrupt beyond redemption and unfit to reenter society.

Seventeen-year-old Gavon Ramsay sneaked into his 98-year-old neighbor’s house through an unlocked door and took video of her sleeping on a couch.

Wearing plastic gloves, the Wadsworth teen strangled Margaret Douglas until she took her last breath and then spent two hours taking more videos and photographs of her corpse, including several of a sexual nature.

Ramsay then stuffed her body in a small closet, covered her with clothes and a vacuum cleaner and returned to his home five doors down before his parents awoke at 5 a.m.

These were among the brutal details of Douglas’ April 6 death that Medina County Common Pleas Judge Joyce Kimbler pointed to Thursday when she sentenced Ramsay to life in prison without the possibility of parole. Because of his age, this was the maximum possible sentence.

Kimbler said she found Ramsay to be “irreparably corrupt” and “unfit to re-enter society.”

“This crime was depraved and premeditated and of a nature not previously seen in this community,” the judge said.

Gavon Ramsay showed little emotion when Kimbler announced her decision after a long and emotional court hearing that included testimony from the teen’s parents — who blame his actions on misprescribed medication. Stephen Ramsay, his father, wiped tears from his eyes in the back of the courtroom.

Ramsay plans to appeal.

Gavon Ramsay More News

Gavon Ramsay, the 17-year-old male who broke into the Wadsworth home of 98-year-old Margaret Douglas, strangled her to death, and then assaulted her body while photographing it will serve a life sentence without the possibility of parole.

This determination came after a several-hours long court hearing Jan. 3 in front of Common Pleas Judge Joyce Kimbler, which included testimony from a forensic psychologist, corrections officials, Ramsay’s parents and victims’ statements from two of Douglas’ relatives.

The U.S. Supreme Court has ruled a judge can only sentence a juvenile to life without the chance of parole if certain standards are met and taken into consideration. The juvenile suspect must be convicted or be found guilty of murder and has to be considered “irreparably corrupt, beyond redemption and thus unfit ever to re-enter society,” said Kimbler, citing a 2014 California Supreme Court ruling.

“The court finds this was not a crime of passion, but was depraved and premeditated,” she said. “The crime was of a nature not previously seen in this community.”

Juveniles cannot be sentenced to the death penalty, according to a previous U.S. Supreme Court ruling.

Douglas’ body was found in a small hallway closet under clothes and other items by relatives April 9, 2018 after being reported missing; it is believed she was killed early the morning of April 6.

Ramsay reportedly was in Douglas’ home between 2 and 4 a.m. and during that time strangled her, took photos and videos of the body in different positions and hid the body, records show. County Prosecutor Forrest Thompson said multiple times throughout the hearing Ramsay only left the home because he knew his parents would soon be waking up for work. Douglas was asleep on her couch when Ramsay attacked her; he reportedly took photos of her sleeping beforehand.

Photographs and videos of Douglas’ body were found on Ramsay’s cellphone and her wallet was found in Ramsay’s bedroom by police, both of which Thompson said were “trophies” similar to those collected by serial killers.

The photos reportedly showed Douglas’ body in a state of undress and in some of them, Ramsay is shown sexually assaulting the body, records show.

Police also found notebooks by Ramsay expressing his desire to kill people and facts about serial killers he had researched. Officers also found a glove belonging to Ramsay at Douglas’ residence; without this, Thompson said he may have gotten away with the murder and killed others.

Cindy and Patricia Leasure, Douglas’ niece and great-niece, spoke during the hearing. Cindy Leasure said Douglas was in relatively good health, allowing her to live independently, and looked forward to celebrating her 100th birthday. She and her husband, who took Douglas to the store and ran errands for her, reportedly found her body.

Patricia Leasure said she thought Ramsay picked Douglas due to her age and vulnerability and wanted to use her as as a “practice run” for other murders.

“I have no doubt he would have continued killing,” she said.

Ramsay lived five houses away from Douglas, close enough for him to go to the residence on foot and back in the middle of the night, said Thompson.

Ramsay previously pleaded no contest to nine counts in November, including four counts of aggravated murder, two counts of murder, one count of kidnapping, one count of aggravated burglary and one count of gross abuse of a corpse. He was charged as an adult after being bound over from juvenile court; he changed his plea just before his trial was set to begin.

Forensic psychologist Luna Jones of the Akron Psycho-diagnostic Clinic testified she conducted a psychological examination of Ramsay in November and determined he suffered from conduct disorder, where a patient violates rules and engages in destructive and violent behavior, in addition to a sexual disorder where he is aroused by the suffering of others without their consent. For both of these conditions, she said recidivism rates are very high and requires intensive therapy to treat.

She also said Ramsay suffered from depression and ADHD, along with alcohol and marijuana dependency; he reportedly said before the murder he drank up to a fifth of vodka per day and either stole the liquor or took money from his parents to buy it.

Jones said Ramsay told her he didn’t think too much about the murder but said he was remorseful.

Ramsay also briefly spoke during the hearing, saying he could wish he could take what he did back.

“I wish I had the words to express how sorry I am,” he said.

The defense argued during the hearing Ramsay killed Douglas due to the increased anger he experienced after being given a prescription for the anti-depressant Zoloft a few months before the murder. In some patients, the drug can make a patient have violent tendencies, especially if one is given a high dosage (100 mg.) like Ramsay was, said county Public Defender Jocelyn Stefancin.

This point was made by Ramsay’s mother Christine Ramsay during her testimony; she said she had no idea about these potential side effects when she gave her son the drug and only learned about it after his arrest. She also said her son had been sexually abused by an older boy at around age 7 or 8, which caused him to go to counseling for the first time. He had gone to sessions off and on until the day of his arrest by Wadsworth Police.

Thompson said Ramsay’s crime was planned in advance and that he had been on a path of criminal activity for several years. At the time of his arrest, Ramsay was a suspect in a carjacking; he had reportedly met a man on a dating app and then took his car. Ramsay had also robbed other men he had met through the app.

When he was younger, Ramsay had been suspended from school for bringing an Airsoft gun to school and for climbing onto the roof and breaking into Central Intermediate School in Wadsworth. Records show Ramsay had also spray-painted graffiti in a city park

Brogan Raferty Other News

A teenager was sentenced to life in prison with no chance for parole Friday for his role in a deadly plot to lure men desperate for work with phony Craigslist job offers.

Judge Lynne Callahan sentenced 17-year-old Brogan Rafferty, who had been convicted on Oct. 30 of aggravated murder and attempted murder in the deaths of three men and wounding of a fourth.

The sentencing was delayed from Monday amid talks on a deal for leniency in return for Rafferty’s testimony against the alleged triggerman. Rafferty was looking to avoid a life sentence without hope of parole.

The jury rejected the defense claim that Rafferty feared for himself and his family if he didn’t cooperate with his co-defendant, Richard Beasley of Akron.

The 53-year-old Beasley, described as the teen’s spiritual mentor, has pleaded not guilty and faces a Jan. 7 trial.

Prosecutors say the victims, all down in their luck and with few family ties that might highlight their disappearance, were lured with phony offers of farmhand jobs on Craigslist last year.

One man was killed near Akron and the others were shot at a southeast Ohio farm during bogus job interviews.

Prosecutors say robbery was the motive.

Rafferty, a high school student from Stow, was tried as an adult but didn’t face a possible death penalty because he is a juvenile.

Beasley, an ex-convict and self-styled street minister from Akron, could face the death penalty if convicted.

The surviving victim, 49-year-old Scott Davis of South Carolina, testified as the prosecution’s star witness. He identified Rafferty as Beasley’s accomplice and told the jury a harrowing story.

Davis, who was looking to move close to his family in the Canton area, said he was walking across what turned out to be a bogus job site when he heard a gun cock and turned and found himself face to face with a handgun. He said he pushed the weapon aside, was shot in the arm and fled through the woods.

During Rafferty’s trial, defense attorney John Alexander painted Beasley as the mastermind and said that the first killing came without warning for Rafferty.

The three murdered men were Ralph Geiger, 56, of Akron; David Pauley, 51, of Norfolk, Va.; and Timothy Kern, 47, of Massillon. Authorities say they were targeted because they were older, single, out-of-work men with backgrounds that made it unlikely their disappearances would be noticed right away.

A teen has been sentenced to 15 years to life in prison after pleading guilty to stabbing and beating his younger brother to death after an argument over Halloween candy.

Nicholas Starling, 17, was only 16 when he killed his 14-year-old brother, Harley Starling, in October 2016, the Dayton Daily News reports.

Nicholas Starling pleaded guilty last week, according to Clark County court records.

Clark County Prosecutor Andy Wilson tells the Springfield News Sun the case is the worst involving child-on-child crime that he’s ever seen.

“It was up close, it was personal, if you think about it,” Wilson tells the News Sun. “He took that bat and you know he was feeling the shock of that bat as he hit his brother in the head with it. And to finish him off he walks into the kitchen and grabs a knife and plunges that knife into his brother’s throat.”

While a detective said said Nicholas Starling admitted he had fought with his brother over candy, Wilson said the motive for the slaying was unclear. He tells the News Sun the older Starling had a difficult upbringing was “into some satanic worship and that kind of stuff.”

“Anyone who could do something like this is ill,” Wilson says. “You have to be a sick person to do what he did but that doesn’t mean you are criminally insane.”
