Arizona Department of Corrections plans to execute the man convicted of gunning down six people in a pair of 1996 robberies this morning.

Robert Glen Jones was convicted in 1998 of shooting and killing six people in robberies at the Moon Smoke Shop on May 30, 1996 and the Firefighter’s Union Hall on June 13, 1996.

Robert Jones, 43, and Scott Nordstrom were found guilty of the murders in 1998 and sentenced to die for the crimes.

Arthur “Taco” Bell, 54; Judy Bell, 46; Maribeth Munn, 53; and Carol Lynn Noel, 50, were fatally shot during the union hall robbery.

Clarence Odell III, 47; and Thomas Hardman, 26, were killed in the Moon Smoke Shop.

“It’s overdue; it’s way overdue,” said Don Sink, a longtime friend of Arthur and Judy Bell.

Sink, 69, said he and Arthur Bell shared a passion for sprint and supermodified race cars that they built and raced at tracks across the Southwest.

He said the killings at the Firefighter’s Union Hall were especially senseless because of the peaceful and friendly nature of the victims, adding Arthur Bell would have gladly helped the killers carry the cash register to their truck if it was money they were after.

“He was the most easygoing person,” Sink said.

The mother-in-law of Moon Smoke Shop victim Odell also said the execution was too long delayed.

“He had just gone inside the door of the smoke shop when it happened. He didn’t deserve that,” said Donna Schoonbeck.

She said Odell left behind two children.

The 90-year-old Schoonbeck, who attended Jones’ 1998 murder trial, is on the list of 22 victim witnesses allowed to watch Jones death by injection at the state prison in Florence.

The separate trials of Jones and Nordstrom held the attention of the community because of the gruesome and unprovoked nature of the crimes.

In the Moon Smoke Shop killings, Jones and Nordstrom entered the store and Jones immediately shot Odell in the head.

The pair then held employees at gunpoint, demanding money from two cash registers in the store.

Nordstrom pursued Hardman, who worked at the smoke shop, into a back room, where he forced him to lie facedown on the floor and shot him in the back of the head.

Jones shot and injured another employee, who survived.

The killings at the union hall were considered even more brutal, with the gunmen essentially executing the unarmed victims

Robert Jones told the Bells and Munn to put their heads on the bar while Nordstrom took Noel into the back room, demanding she open a safe.

As the victims sat with their faces to the bar, Jones shot each in the back of the head with a 9 mm pistol.

When Noel could not open the safe, Nordstrom shot her in the back of the head with a .380-caliber handgun.

The gunmen fled with an estimated $1,300.

Throughout the trial and appeals, Jones maintained his innocence.

Evidence presented at trial, however, proved too great for his defense to overcome.

For example, testimony from acquaintances of Jones, whom he stayed with in the Phoenix area after the killings, said he boasted openly about the crimes.

Letters Robert Jones sent a former girlfriend while he was in Maricopa County Jail after an arrest for another robbery and murder show him directing her to provide an alibi.

In meticulous cursive handwriting, Jones laid out his alibi following with a veiled threat.

“Get that story in your head and stick to it,” he wrote. “You know my friends! I’ll make sure you’re taken care of if you help me.”

The most damning testimony likely came from Nordstrom’s brother, David Nordstrom, who contacted police with evidence Jones had committed the crimes.

David Nordstrom admitted to police that he drove the getaway car in the Moon Smoke Shop killing.

David Nordstrom eventually pleaded guilty to armed robbery and served less than four years in prison. Like Jones, Scott Nordstrom was convicted on six counts of first-degree murder and sentenced to death. He remains on death row.

Federal public defenders have argued that Jones had ineffective counsel at his trial and a now-deceased Pima County prosecutor withheld evidence. They still question David Nordstrom’s testimony.

Unless the U.S. Supreme Court agrees to rehear Jones’ case or issue a stay by 10 a.m. today, Jones will become the 36th inmate executed by Arizona since 1992. He would be the second inmate put to death by the state in two weeks.

Robert Jones turned down a request for an interview in the weeks before the execution.

From Sink’s perspective, sad irony encompasses the entire case.

He said Arthur Bell, an auto mechanic, had repaired the truck the killers drove just weeks before the murders.

“The thing that’s really sad about the thing,” Sink said, “is that Judy (Bell) didn’t believe in the death penalty.”

A death row prisoner confessed to killing a South Florida woman moments before he was executed Tuesday, according to the South Florida SunSentinel.

William Happ, 51, was executed for the 1986 rape and strangulation of Angie Crowley, whom he encountered by chance at a convenience store parking lot

Happ was pronounced dead at 6:16 p.m. at Florida State Prison in Starke. He was executed by lethal injection.

Moments before he was to be executed, Happ confessed and offered his “most sincere and heartfelt apologies” to Crowley’s family members in attendance. Happ had previously maintained his innocence.

“I pray the good lord forgives me for my sins,” Happ said. “But I can certainly understand why those concerned here cannot.”

Crowley, 21, moved to South Florida from Oregon, Ill., just five months before her murder. She was traveling to visit a friend in north Florida when she stopped in Crystal River to use a pay phone at a convenience store.

Happ just happened to be there. He smashed the window to the car and kidnapped Crowley. He raped and then strangled her with her stretch pants and threw her body in a canal.

William Happ Other News

Florida has executed 51-year-old William Happ for the 1986 rape and strangulation of a woman he encountered by chance in a convenience store parking lot.

Officials said Happ was pronounced dead at 6:16 p.m. at Florida State Prison in Starke. He was executed by injection, 24 years after he was sentenced to die following his conviction in the murder of 21-year-old Angie Crowley.

In a final statement, Happ expressed remorse for his actions.

“To my agonizing shame, I must confess to the crime,” he said in a slow, deliberate voice. “I wish to offer my most sincere, heartfelt apology. I have prayed for the good Lord to forgive me for my sins. But I understand why those here cannot.”

The words didn’t mean much to Crowley’s brother Chris.

“The apology, for what it’s worth, I personally think that’s more for himself than anything,” Crowley said, adding that he doesn’t forgive Happ. “He needs to ask someone a lot more important than me for forgiveness.”

The execution began at 6:02 p.m. Happ’s eyes opened and he blinked several times. He closed them and opened them again two minutes later. He then yawned and his jaw dropped open.

At 6:08 p.m., the official overseeing the execution tugged at Happ’s eyelids and grasped his shoulder to check for a response. There was none.

A minute later, Happ’s head began moving back and forth and shortly thereafter his breathing stopped. He was pronounced dead at 6:16 p.m.

Happ was the first person to be executed under a new mix of drugs Florida is using for lethal injections. It appeared Happ remained conscious longer and made more body movements after losing consciousness than other people executed recently by lethal injection under the old formula.

Angie Crowley’s family gave a statement afterward.

“We have lost a vibrant young lady with dark blue eyes and an infectious smile. With this loss we will no longer experience her great sense of humor, her laughter and her loving and caring personality,” Chris Crowley said while surrounded by family and friends. “Our loss is also your loss. You have lost the possibility of meeting such a special person.”

Angie Crowley’s mother and two siblings died before they could see the sentence carried out, but Crowley’s surviving sisters and brothers were in Starke to watch as Happ was executed. Chris Crowley made the trip from Missouri.

Angie Crowley had moved to Florida from Oregon, Ill., just five months before her 1986 murder. The 21-year-old was working as a travel agent in the Fort Lauderdale area and planned to make the 300-mile drive to visit a college friend in Yankeetown. Crowley was prone to getting lost, so her friend told her to drive to a convenience store in Crystal River and call her from a pay phone in the parking lot and she’d met her and guide her the last few miles.

Crowley found the store, but she never made it to the phone. Happ just happened to be there, too. He smashed the window to the car and kidnapped Crowley and took her to a canal where he gave her 10 to 20 severe blows to the head. He raped her, then strangled her with her stretch pants and threw her body in the water.

Happ left for California, where he was arrested on unrelated charges. A detective flew from Florida to get one of his sneakers and later matched it to a shoe print at the scene of the killing.

At the time, Happ was a high school dropout living with his aunt. He did odd jobs, laid bricks and did some landscaping. He was also abusing alcohol and drugs.

Crowley was a beautiful, smart, popular woman who was pursuing her dream to travel the world. Her murder shocked Oregon, a town of about 3,500 about 25 miles southwest of Rockford, Ill. She was an honor student, cheerleader and musician.

She just happened to pull into the parking lot at the wrong time.

“They just intersected — and the odds,” Chris Crowley said. “Those are lottery odds.”

The randomness of the crime has left questions in Crowley’s mind.

“The only thing I would like to know is why, and I don’t expect to find out,” Crowley said. “I have a lot of hatred for the man. A lot of hatred.”

After Florida Gov. Rick Scott signed Happ’s death warrant, Happ told a judge he did not want any lawyers filing appeals for him.

Happ was calm Tuesday when he met with two spiritual advisers, including a Roman Catholic priest who administered last rites, according to Department of Corrections spokeswoman Jessica Cary.

For his last meal, Happ had a 12-ounce box of assorted chocolates and 1½ quarts of German chocolate ice cream.

Michael Yowell Texas Execution

Michael Yowell - Texas

Michael Yowell was executed by the State of Texas for the murders of his parents and grandmother. According to court documents Michael Yowell would shoot and kill his father, strangle his mother and then cut the gas line to the home. When his grandmother opened the door the house exploded killing her. Apparently Michael Yowell committed the murders after stealing from his parents for drug money. Michael Yowell would be arrested, convicted and sentenced to death. Michael Yowell would be executed by lethal injection on October 9 2013

Michael Yowell More News

Authorities became suspicious about the deaths of a Lubbock couple in an explosion and fire that leveled their home, when the remains of the woman retrieved from the rubble showed a lamp cord was wrapped around her neck.

Medical examiners determined 53-year-old Carol Yowell had been strangled before the blast on Mother’s Day weekend in 1998.  An autopsy on the remains of her 55-year-old husband, John, disclosed he’d been shot in the head.

Their ex-convict son appeared at his parents’ home later that day, was arrested on federal firearms charges and days later was charged with capital murder for their slayings.

Michael Yowell, 43, is set for execution Wednesday evening.

He would be the 14th inmate this year executed in Texas, which carries out the death penalty more than any other state.

The U.S. Supreme Court refused Monday to review Yowell’s appeals that he received shoddy legal help at his 1999 trial and in the early stages of appeals.

Yowell tried to head off the punishment by joining with two other Texas death row inmates in a lawsuit against Texas prison officials, contending that the use of a new supply of pentobarbital in executions could be unconstitutionally cruel because the drug comes from a compounding pharmacy not subjected to federal scrutiny.

Texas, like other death penalty states, has turned to compounding pharmacies, which custom-make drugs for customers, after traditional manufacturers declined to sell to prison agencies or bowed to pressure from execution opponents. Texas’ previous supply of pentobarbital expired last month.

In the lawsuit, Yowell sought an injunction to delay the execution and gain more time to ensure “the integrity and legality” of the drugs and be certain its use complies with constitutional protections.

The 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals late Tuesday rejected the lawsuit, saying Yowell was demanding permission “to supervise every step of the execution process” and had “no such entitlement.” They also agreed with a federal district judge in Houston who ruled similarly that Texas prison officials had done nothing wrong.

Evidence at Yowell’s 1999 trial showed he had a $200-a-day drug habit that he stole to support. At the time of the slayings, he was on probation for burglary and drug possession.

Evidence also showed that he used a credit card he stole from his mother to buy firearms from three stores and that he falsified documents to buy and pawn weapons. He signed a statement acknowledging he’d forged checks he stole from his mother.

Yowell told authorities he shot his father, who caught Yowell trying to steal his wallet, beat and strangled his mother and then opened a gas valve in their home before fleeing.  His grandmother, Viola Davis, 89, who was at the home in Lubbock, died days later of burns suffered in the blast.

“A lot of what was going on with me was hallucinations,” Michael Yowell, who declined interview requests with The Associated Press as his execution date neared, said in a 2005 interview with Lubbock television station KCBD.  “I had been up for the past two months on speed and cocaine.

“Sorry couldn’t even begin to tell how I feel about what happened.”

Edward Schad Arizona Execution

Edward Schad - Arizona

Edward Schad was executed by the State of Arizona for the murder of an elderly man in 1978. According to court documents Edward Schad would murder the man before stealing her vehicle and wallet. Edward Schad would be arrested a month later still in possession of the man’s vehicle. Edward Schad would be arrested, convicted and sentenced to death. Edward Schad would be executed by lethal injection on October 8 2013

Edward Schad More News

The oldest man on Arizona’s death row was executed Wednesday morning after 35 years in custody.

Edward Harold Schad Jr., 71, was given a lethal dose of the pentobarbital and was pronounced dead at 10:12 a.m. Wednesday at the state prison in Florence, Ariz.

Schad was sentenced to death for the 1978 murder of Lorimer Grove, 74, who was found dead in underbrush by the side of a road south of Prescott, Ariz. A month later, Schad was arrested in Salt Lake City; he had Grove’s Cadillac and his credit cards.

Schad met with his attorney, assistant federal defender Kelley Henry, Tuesday night and expressed his gratitude for kindness of the correctional officers who guarded him during the last 35 days of his life, a period called “death watch,” when the condemned prisoners are separated from the other inmates on death row

Wednesday morning, Schad met with his longtime spiritual adviser, a Lutheran pastor who administered last rites. The pastor told Henry that Schad was “doing well,” and had not yet heard that the U.S. Supreme Court had denied the final requests for a reprieve.

Schad was convicted twice of killing 74-year-old Lorimer “Leroy” Grove.

Grove was last seen leaving town pulling a trailer with his new Cadillac on the way to visit his sister in Washington state. He was found dead with a rope knotted around his neck on Aug. 9, 1978, south of Prescott.

Schad’s execution was Arizona’s 35th since 1992. His death leaves 121 people on the death row in the state, including two women.

Schad says he ended up on death row only because of a misunderstanding. He was a car thief and a forger, not a murderer, he told the clemency board.

His earlier second-degree murder conviction had been a case of mistaken identity, as well, he said.

The clemency board did not believe him; neither did the three juries that convicted him, nor a host of judges and justices right up to the U.S. Supreme Court over 34 years of appeals.

Marshall Gore Florida Execution

Marshall Gore florida

Marshall Gore was executed by the State of Florida for the sexual assault and murders of two women. According to court documents Marshall Gore would sexually assault and murder Susan Roark on January 31 1988 and two months later would sexually assault and murder Robin Novick. Marshall Gore would be arrested, convicted and sentenced to death. Marshall Gore would be executed by lethal injection on October 1 2013

Marshall Gore More News

A former escort service owner who has spent 23 years on death row was executed by lethal injection Tuesday evening at Florida State Prison for the slaying of an exotic dancer.

Marshall Lee Gore was sentenced to death for the March 1988 murder of 30-year-old Robyn Novick, whose nude body was found dumped in rural Miami-Dade County. Gore was also convicted of killing another woman, Susan Roark, and of the attempted murder of a third woman.

In addition to the two death sentences, Gore was given seven life sentences plus another 110 years in a case involving the attempted murder.

Gore was pronounced dead at 6:12 p.m. Tuesday following an injection at Florida State Prison, authorities said.

Earlier, Corrections Department spokeswoman Jessica Cary said Gore requested a last meal of a sausage and pepperoni pizza, but he did not eat it. Gore did drink a soda, however, and met with both his spiritual adviser and one of his attorneys.

This is the fourth time Gore’s execution has been scheduled this year. Twice, courts put the execution on hold due to insanity claims. Attorney General Pam Bondi’s staff also once asked that it be postponed because it conflicted with her political fundraiser.

On Monday, Gore’s attorneys asked for a stay from the U.S. Supreme Court.

The 49-year-old Gore says he suffers from delusions related to a conspiracy theory in which the purpose of his execution is so that the elite and wealthy people can harvest his organs. Gore has also said he is being targeted by satanic worshippers for human sacrifice, that he hears voices telling him to hang himself and that he was somehow injected with the virus that causes tuberculosis.

The appeals judges sided with a panel of state-appointed mental health experts who concluded Gore’s “insanity” was all an act “designed to mislead the panel and avoid responsibility for his past actions.”

Gore was arrested after attacking a third woman, who survived, and later testified at his trial in connection with Novick’s death. The survivor said Gore beat her with a rock, choked, raped and stabbed her, leaving her near where Novick’s body was found.

The FBI tracked the woman’s stolen car to Paducah, Ky., and arrested Gore. When he was found, he had the woman’s bank and credit cards in his jacket pocket, according to court documents.

Upon questioning about all three crimes and shown pictures of Novick’s body, police said his eyes filled with tears and he said, “If I did this, I deserve the death penalty.”

Gore initially denied knowing any of the women, according to police. But he later testified that all three women worked for him at an escort service.
