A Palm Springs woman was arrested on a charge of first-degree murder after she stabbed her husband more than 140 times with a meat cleaver, police said.

According to a Palm Springs police report, Ricardo Green, 41, called 911 on the evening of Feb. 11 to say that he came home from work and found his stepfather, Melvin Weller, 62, lying on the floor in a pool of blood. Green said Weller appeared to be dead.

When officers arrived they located the victim on the floor surrounded by a pool of blood that covered more than half of the kitchen.

Officers noticed blood spatters and smears on the walls, kitchen cabinets and counters. A couple of knives and a meat cleaver were in the kitchen sink.

Officers found the victim’s wife, Joan Burke, 61, lying in bed in the master bedroom. She was alert and conscious but remained mute.

Burke was transported to J.F.K. Hospital to be evaluated.

Investigators found cleaning tools on the floor near the victim’s body. They say the numerous injuries to his body, coupled with the blood stains cast or otherwise spread on the walls, ceiling, counters, and cabinets made it obvious a violent struggle had occurred.

An autopsy revealed the victim suffered more than 140 stab wounds all over his body.

He also had a skull fracture caused by a blow from a meat cleaver to the right rear area of his head.

A tied-up plastic bag was located on the kitchen counter top containing Burke’s bloodstained nightgown and a cell phone.

Investigators at this time believe the cell phone belonged to the victim.

According to an arrest affidavit, Burke had lacerations on the palms of both hands. Investigators said it is common for the offender to have lacerations to the palm of one or both hands when he or she stabs another person.

The repeated stabbings result in blood getting on the knife handle and onto the stabber’s hands, causing the stabber’s grip to slip and lacerate their skin with the blade.

Joan Burke is charged with first degree murder and made her first court appearance on Sunday, February 20, 2022. She is being held without bond.

Cadesha Bishop would ultimately plead guilty to abuse of an elderly person resulting in death and would be sentenced to 8 to 20 years in prison

A Las Vegas woman who fatally injured a 74-year-old man by pushing him off a public bus told a judge on Friday that she had been unfairly portrayed in the media.

“I’m sorry for my behavior,” Cadesha Bishop, 28, said during Friday’s sentencing hearing. “I’m sorry for the way that I was portrayed in my lowest and weakest moment of my life.”

District Judge Tierra Jones ordered Bishop to serve eight to 20 years in prison for the 2019 death of Serge Fournier.

Bishop, 28, pleaded guilty on Dec. 27 to abuse of an older or vulnerable person resulting in death. She initially was charged with murder after being accused of pushing Fournier off a parked bus near Fremont and 13th streets.

Fournier landed on his head about 8 feet from the bus doorway and died about a month later, according to Bishop’s arrest report.

Bishop told Jones that other judges indicated she could be a candidate for probation. She asked to be referred to “some type of program” and said she pleaded guilty because she felt she would not receive a fair deal otherwise.

“I’m just asking the court for help,” Bishop said. “The way that I’ve been portrayed, it’s just not fair for somebody who’s never been in trouble before.”

Jones said Bishop could apply for different programs while in prison, but that she was going to sentence her to the period set in the plea deal with prosecutors.

“The actions in this case make you not a probation candidate,” Jones said. “I’m not putting you on probation. That is not happening here today.”

Defense attorney Stephen Spelman told the judge that Bishop “suffers from bipolar disorder and she reports PTSD.”

“While never minimizing the pain of the family’s loss, of course, nor being an excuse, it certainly helps me understand a little more how this tragedy might have come about,” he said.

No relatives spoke on the victim’s behalf at the hearing.

According to Bishop’s arrest report, witnesses reported that she was yelling profanities on the Regional Transportation Commission bus on March 21, 2019. As Fournier was passing Bishop in the aisle, he told her “to be nice to the passengers,” the report said.

Using both her hands, Bishop pushed Fournier off the bus. Fournier was holding what appeared to be a walker or folded basket when he was pushed, according to surveillance footage released shortly after his death.

Bishop grabbed her son’s hand and walked away from the bus without offering help, the report said.

In July, a judge revoked Bishop’s bail after she was charged with grand larceny of a vehicle, embezzlement and theft in a separate case, court records show. She previously had posted a $100,000 bail in connection with the murder charge.

Prosecutors said Cadesha Bishop rented a 2020 Chevrolet Impala from Enterprise and failed to return it after the rental agreement ended

According to court records, prosecutors intend to dismiss the grand larceny, embezzlement and theft charges because of the negotiations in the abuse case.

Former Weston doctor Rafael Azulay, who is accused of killing his father in 2018, formally accepted a plea deal Friday, pleading guilty to a lesser charge of manslaughter, and he is expected to be released from jail sometime later in the day

“He was charged with murder in the second degree. He was accused of shooting his father and killing his father, and shooting himself, trying to commit suicide,” Azulay’s attorney, Hilliard Moldof, said.

After pleading guilty to manslaughter, Azulay was sentenced to two years of house arrest followed by 10 years of probation.

Deputies say Azulay lured his 67-year-old father, Asher Azulay, and his mother to his Weston home, where he shot and killed his father.

His mother escaped unharmed.

Since then, he has been in the hospital and serving time in the Broward County Jail.

In 2019, Azulay’s attorney requested his release due to mental incompetence.

“Nobody leaves a winner in a case like this,” Moldof said. “His father is dead, he’s seriously injured, his mother wants him back.”

While Azulay is pleased with the outcome, his ex-fiancée is not and told Local 10 News that she fears for her safety. She did not want to be identified, but provided Local 10 News photos of her injuries that she says were related to domestic violence cases prior to the murder of Azulay’s father.

The cases involving the woman and Azulay range from 2015 to 2018.

“I fear retaliation,” she told Local 10 News. “He is going to kill me and then he is going to kill himself.”

She says the district attorney called her about the plea deal in December.

The woman argues that if Azulay isn’t competent enough for a trial, how is he competent enough to make a plea deal?

“How does the state attorney’s office even come to the conclusion that they can offer a plea to a defendant who is incompetent to proceed,” she said.

“I’m confident he understands the outcome of the case,” Moldof said. “I think tomorrow if you asked him some of the details, he won’t remember them — that’s the problem. So a trial is not possible for him.”

The ex-fiancée said there is a 12-year no-contact order in place, but she feels that the order is not long enough. She said she will try to file an appeal to see if she can get Azulay back behind bars.

As for Azulay, he now faces two years of house arrest followed by 10 years probation
