Anita’s father would make the grim discovery after not hearing from his daughter for a few days. Anita Knutson died from several stab wounds. The case to find her killer went nowhere for a long time with the Knutson family blaming the local police for screwing up the investigation. Nichole Rice who attended school with Anita Knutson and was her roommate at the time of her murder told police that she was with her family during the time that Anita was murdered however her story and that of her family was full of inconsistencies however she was never arrested due to lack of evidence. However that changed this year when Nichole Rice would confess to an ex boyfriend that she was responsible for the murder of Anita Knutson. When they broke up the ex told the police and Nichole Rice would finally be arrested and charged with the murder of Anita Knutson.

Nichole Rice More News

Nearly 15 years after a North Dakota teen was found murdered in her home, a crack has finally been made in the case. Police in Minot say that Nichole Rice, 34, has been arrested in connection with 18-year-old Anita Knutson’s killing, after more than 10 years in which “there was no person of interest, little evidence, and a murder victim with no justice,” per KXMB. The Minot State University freshman was found dead in her bedroom on June 4, 2007, after her dad, Gordon Knutson, hadn’t heard from her in a few days, drove to her apartment, and saw a blood-stained mattress through the window, he told Crime Watch Daily in an earlier interview, per the Washington Post. Police say Anita Knutson, who was found on her bed with a housecoat placed over her, had been stabbed to death.

Knutson’s family wasn’t happy with the yearslong investigation that followed, claiming that law enforcement botched the search to find her killer. On Wednesday, Minot Police Chief John Klug announced his team finally had a suspect: Rice, who’d gone to high school with Knutson and was Knutson’s roommate at the time of her murder, per InForum. When the probe into the killing initially began, Rice is said to have told police she was with her family the weekend before Knutson was found, but according to an affidavit of probable cause for Rice, police found remarks by both Rice and her parents to be “inconsistent and contradictory,” per the Post. Those who knew both young women also labeled Rice “hot-tempered and reactionary.”

“Anita was scared of her,” Knutson’s mom, Sharon Knutson, told Crime Watch Daily in the earlier interview, noting her daughter had planned to move out of the apartment she shared with Rice. But police say they didn’t have enough evidence to charge Rice—until earlier this month, when they were able to track down an ex-boyfriend whom Rice allegedly confessed the crime to, per the affidavit. Rice was arrested Wednesday while at her civilian job at Minot Air Force Base. Police haven’t yet revealed a motive. Rice, who was released from Ward County Jail after posting a $120,000 bond, faces life in prison without chance for parole if she’s convicted of the felony charge of intentional murder against her, per KFYR. Melissa Turner More News

Melissa Turner claimed it was self-defense when she stabbed her boyfriend to death during an alcohol-fueled fight one early morning in 2019 at their Riverview home.

From the witness stand in a Tampa courtroom Friday, she spoke through tears to describe Matthew Trussler as a man addicted, depressed, self-destructive and abusive.

“I wanted to help him,” she said. “I wanted to do what I could for him. I loved him.”

But there were inconsistencies in the accounts she gave detectives and a jury.

Found guilty of second-degree murder last month, Turner, 29, received a sentence Friday of 20 years in prison.

Melissa Turner phoned 911 the morning of Oct. 18, 2019, and reported that she’d found Trussler cold and unresponsive on the back patio of their home on White Barn Way in Riverview. Hillsborough sheriff’s deputies found a bloody scene. Trussler was found to have died from blood loss through stab wounds to his body.

When first questioned, Turner told investigators she did not know what happened. She later told of a violent argument, a struggle over a knife and passing out after hitting her head.

A video taken from a neighbor’s home captured footage of the darkened street adjacent to the privacy fence that enclosed Turner’s backyard. The accompanying audio captured what sounded like glass breaking, a woman shouting and screaming, and a woman uttering, “I hate you,” “Stay down” and numerous profanities.

Defense lawyer John Trevena questioned what was in the audio. At trial, he called as a witness Bruce Koenig, a former FBI director of audiovisual technology, who said the recording was generally inaudible and concluded that it could be misleading.

But the audio remained a key piece of evidence, along with a medical assessment of how Trussler died. A prosecutor noted that he lost half the blood in his body to multiple stab wounds, indicating he was alive and slowly dying for a prolonged period.

“This is not a case where the defendant is a victim of domestic violence,” said Assistant State Attorney Katherine Fand. “This is a case where Matthew Trussler is the victim of domestic violence. That’s the important thing to focus on, is that he is the victim in this case.”

The sentencing came after a three-hour hearing where Turner and others described her life and troubled upbringing. She grew up in North Carolina and Florida. She suffered abuse at the hands of a relative in early childhood. She ate compulsively, struggled with obesity and endured bullying in school.

But she did well academically and eventually earned an associate’s degree in business. In adulthood, she lost 100 pounds. She competed in cosplay contests and worked as a webcam model.

Trussler, 25, was from Massachusetts and relocated to Florida in pursuit of a new life. He worked for his brother’s company, installing home insulation. He and Turner met through the Tinder dating app.

They eventually bought a home in Riverview and had plans to get married.

But Melissa Turner spoke of a rocky relationship, made worse by Trussler’s drinking. She would find empty bottles in her truck console. She would see him line up shot glasses and drink them back to back. Some mornings she found him heaving over a toilet. He drank so much, she said, he sometimes experienced hallucinations of a demon.

She watched him burn his skin with cigarette butts and lighters, she said. He never spoke about his problems, she said, and became upset if she tried to get him to confront them.

“It was like he was drowning and I was the only one there to offer him a hand,” she said. “I wasn’t strong enough to pull him from the water.”

But Trussler’s relatives said Melissa Turner was the troubled one. Sean Trussler saw his brother grow distant from him after he met Turner.

“This isn’t a story of a poor innocent girl,” Sean Trussler testified Friday. “This is a story of a woman who intentionally isolated and manipulated a good kid away from his loving and supportive family.”

Trussler’s mother, Margaret McLaughlin, said Turner’s claims of domestic violence caused as much pain as her son’s death.

If Turner was concerned for his well-being, she could have come to his family.

“You should have reached out to us for help,” McLaughlin told Turner in court. “You never did. If you had done so, I believe none of us would be here today.”

Bjana James More News

The boyfriend of a Bronx mother found dead with her throat slit in her apartment has been arrested for the slaying, police said Sunday.

Nashan Walsh, 35, was nabbed Sunday and charged with murder, manslaughter and criminal possession of a weapon for the killing of Bjana James, 37, cops said.

Police responding to a 911 call found James dead at the Betances Houses in Mott Haven about 2:30 a.m. Saturday.

She was sprawled out on her coach with her throat slit. Atop her lifeless body was a knife washed clean of any evidence, police said.

Walsh has an “extensive” violent criminal record, a police spokesperson said. He was imprisoned in 2011 for assault, records show.

James’ family told the Daily News the woman’s boyfriend had a bad temper and was abusive.

“I was out with her March 8th, and he was there too,” said one cousin, who would only identify herself as Shelly. “In front of us it was peachy, but behind closed door it wasn’t the same.”

Walsh stormed out of James’ apartment Wednesday after acting erratically, the slain woman’s younger sister said.

“She said ‘I’m scared. He’s going to kill me!’’ said her sister, who did not want to be named.

When Walsh returned later that night, James told her cousin he was back. It was the last time anyone heard from the woman.

James had two children — Maya, 8, and Junior, 12 — who were staying with their grandmother when she was killed, family said.

“She was a loving person,” James’ cousin told The News. “She left her two kids behind. We have to go break the news to her kids. We didn’t think this would happen.”
