DeMarcus Little told the courtroom he was no monster. But it took a jury only two hours to find him guilty of murder Tuesday in the death of his girlfriend, Anitra Gunn.

“I’m not the person that you’re making me out to be. I’m not a monster. Because if I was a monster, she would have left me a long time ago,” Little said, according to Channel 2 Action News.

He took the stand in his own defense, hoping to convince the jurors he was not the killer. Evidence convinced the jury otherwise.

Prosecutors believe Little strangled Gunn to death before leaving her body in a wooded area of Crawford County in February 2020. A graduate of Fulton County’s Westlake High, Gunn was 23.

Little, a U.S. Army soldier stationed at Fort Gordon, had been arrested and charged with criminal damage to property stemming from a Feb. 5, 2020, incident that left Gunn’s windows broken and her tires slashed. While still in custody, he was charged with Gunn’s murder.

A day after she was reported missing by her father, Christopher Gunn, her damaged car was found abandoned near her home. A Peach County Sheriff’s deputy later spotted a piece of the vehicle on the edge of a wood line and followed tire tracks into the woods, where he found her body covered with sticks.

“The ray of sunshine and the apple of our eye gained her heavenly wings,” Christopher Gunn wrote on a GoFundMe page. “Although we have so many unanswered questions, we are trusting in God thru it all. We are so THANKFUL for the outpouring of love, support, and prayers from all over the country.”

At a vigil to honor Gunn, Kelvin Blalock said he hired her to work at his restaurant because of her smile. Many tears had been shed in the restaurant over the past few days.

“She was our sister, she was our teammate,” he said. “We loved her dearly.”

After a week-long trial, the jury found Little guilty of felony murder and aggravated assault but not guilty of malice murder. The judge sentenced him to life without the possibility of parole.

The Oconee County (Georgia) Sheriff’s Office announced on Wednesday that former University of Georgia football player Akhil Crumpton was arrested in connection to the murder of 23-year-old gas station clerk Elijah Wood last year.

Wood was shot and killed at approximately 1:30 a.m. on March 19, 2021, by an armed assailant who was dressed in all black with most of his head concealed by sunglasses, a hood and face mask, investigators said.

Wood’s murder generated public interest and led to a $50,000 reward for information leading to an arrest. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation, the FBI, the U.S. Marshal Service, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, district attorney investigators and other offices collaborated on the investigation, which is ongoing.

According to the sheriff’s office, shell casings at the crime scene were eventually matched to another crime scene in Philadelphia where local police suspected Crumpton was the shooter.

Oconee Sheriff James Hale said further investigation led to the evidence needed to secure an arrest warrant for Crumpton in the murder of Wood.

Akhil Crumpton, who is from Philadelphia, went to a junior college in California and played receiver for Georgia from 2017 to ’18.

Crumpton remains a suspect in the shooting in Philadelphia, but it’s still an active investigation and no charges have been filed, according to a police department spokesman.

Akhil Crumpton Other News

A former University of Georgia football player has been arrested in connection with the shooting death of an Oconee County gas station clerk, authorities said Wednesday.

Ahkil Crumpton, of Philadelphia, has been under investigation since early February, when ballistics evidence tied him to the death of 23-year-old Elijah James Wood, Oconee Sheriff James A. Hale said. Wood was shot at a RaceTrac on Hog Mountain Road outside of Watkinsville on March 19, 2021.

“For the past year we have seen the pain, agony, and frustrations this murder has brought to Elijah’s family, friends, and to our community,” Hale said in a Facebook post announcing Crumpton’s arrest. “We all know this arrest will not bring Elijah back, but we hope his family, friends, and this community can now begin the healing process. We also know that the fight is not over. We must now successfully prosecute the case in a court of law.”

Crumpton’s charges were not immediately available.

After countless hours of investigative work that also involved federal authorities, Hale said they were able to forensically match the shell casing from the gas station scene to another crime scene in Philadelphia. The Oconee agency was notified of the match on Feb. 15, the sheriff said.

Investigators in Philadelphia advised that Akhil Crumpton was the suspected shooter in their case, and Oconee investigators quickly established a link between Philadelphia and Athens, he said. Crumpton played football for UGA in 2017 and 2018. He was a student until 2021, according to the sheriff’s office.

The night of the shooting, Wood had been working alone on the graveyard shift when a customer found him dead behind the checkout counter about 2 a.m. and called authorities, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution previously reported. Responding deputies administered CPR but were unable to revive him.

Authorities released photos and a sketch of a suspect wearing a mask that exposed only his eyes and nose, and not many of his other features were identifiable. The shooter was shown on the store’s surveillance camera walking with a peculiar gait and wearing a black ninja-like mask and hood with a drawstring pulled tight to his head. He also wore gloves, long sleeves, slacks and boots.

Video also showed the man running back and forth throughout the store before eventually leaving the scene, the AJC reported.

Though an arrest has been made, police are still investigating the case. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Oconee County Sheriff’s Office at 706-769-3945.

A U.S. Navy sailor is behind bars, facing several charges after court documents say he admitted to shooting his wife’s boyfriend three times, killing him.

The documents say before his arrest, Tyler Jenkins, 26, asked Virginia Beach police officers, “What am I doing wrong? Did y’all get the gun that I shot him with?”

It all happened an apartment on Crystalline Place, near Town Center in Virginia Beach on Friday night. Jenkins’ wife called 911 after the shooting.

Police said the victim is 28-year-old Timothy Talley III. Family members said he is also a Navy sailor, but he wasn’t stationed in Hampton Roads.

Documents say Jenkins’ wife told police she was engaged in a “sexual act” with Talley at the time of the shooting. She told investigators she feared for her life, because she thought Jenkins was trying to shoot both of them.

Once police officers arrived, documents say Jenkins told them he fired three shots at Talley, and let investigators know where to find the gun.

Jenkins’ preliminary hearing has been set for May 12. He faces Second-Degree Murder, Attempted Malicious Wounding and gun charges.

Court documents show Jenkins started his time in the Navy in 2014.

A U.S. Navy sailor fatally shot his wife’s boyfriend after catching them “engaged in a sexual act” inside their Virginia Beach home Friday, according to court documents.

Tyler Lamar Jenkins, 26, was arraigned Monday on one count of second-degree murder and a firearms charge in the killing of a 28-year-old California man, Timothy Talley III

A bail determination sheet filed in Virginia Beach District Court said Jenkins’ wife called 911 to report that her husband had shot her boyfriend in their residence. Police responded to an apartment complex in the 4800 block of Crystalline Place at 9:47 p.m., where they found Talley with multiple gunshot wounds and pronounced him dead.

Court documents filed in the case state the wife told police that Jenkins entered the room where she was engaged in a sexual act with Talley, and Jenkins fired a gun at Talley. The incident, she said, made her fear for her life.

A police news release issued Saturday described the slaying as “a domestic related shooting death,” but did not describe the relationship between Talley and Jenkins and didn’t provide a motive for the shooting.

Court records state that after Jenkins told police someone was having sex with his wife in their house, he asked “What am I doing wrong?” Jenkins admitted to police that he shot Talley three times. The gun was recovered at the scene.

According to the bail determination sheet, Jenkins has been employed by the U.S. Navy since 2014. Hewas denied a public defender due to his income and is scheduled to appear in court on May 12. A bond hearing may be scheduled once he retains a private attorney.
