Alabama men’s basketball player Darius Miles was among those charged with capital murder in the shooting death of a 23-year-old woman near Bryant-Denny Stadium.

Miles, 21, and Michael Lynn Davis, 20, were charged in the death of Jamea Jonae Harris in an early Sunday morning shooting that took place blocks from the football stadium in Tuscaloosa, according to WBRC-TV.

Authorities were dispatched to the area around 1:45 a.m., and the driver of a vehicle told responding officers that the suspects fired shots into his car and killed Harris, according to the station. The driver told officers he returned fire and thought he struck one of the suspects.

The station reported that one of the suspects suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

Officials said it appeared the shooting was the result of a small argument between the suspects and the victims.

Miles was dismissed from the men’s basketball team after it was revealed he was allegedly involved in the shooting. Earlier Saturday, he was ruled out for the rest of the season with an ankle injury.

“The University of Alabama’s utmost priority is the safety and well-being of the campus community,” the school said. “We are grieved by the incident that occurred near campus last night and extend our deepest condolences to the victim’s family and friends.”

“We are grateful for the quick and thorough response of law enforcement and emergency response teams, and we will continue to fully support the ongoing investigation. We were made aware of the recent charge against student-athlete Darius Miles; he has been removed from campus and is no longer a member of the Alabama men’s basketball team.”

He appeared to be crying and talking to someone outside the Tuscaloosa County Jail, according to AL.com.

“I love you,” he could be heard saying. “I love you more than you can imagine.”

Miles was with the team for Alabama’s 106-66 win over LSU earlier Saturday.

Jared Dicus More News

Friends and family say they are devastated by the brutal murder of Anggy Diaz, allegedly at the hand of her new husband, Jared Dicus.

“Diaz was this little ray of sunshine in his life,” a neighbor who grew up with Dicus said. “She was optimistic. He made her happy, and she kept him in good spirits.”

The newlyweds were married last October by Waller County Judge Trey Duhon, who posted a smiling picture of the couple on Facebook shortly after the ceremony.

Eyewitness News talked with people who said the alleged murder is horrific and shocking. Deputies found Diaz Wednesday at about 4:35 p.m. at the couple’s home on Oak Hollow, just south of FM 1488. They lived in a small structure behind Dicus’ parents’ house, on the same property.

According to Sheriff Troy Guidry, Dicus’ father called authorities when they realized something was wrong. Dicus stayed on the scene as investigators arrived. Diaz’s head was decapitated, and the sheriff said the scene was bloody.

“A portion of the body was dismembered, and the residence was covered in blood. Gruesome scene at best,” he said.

Guidry said that all family members were taken to the sheriff’s department, where they were interviewed, and Dicus was charged.

“Evidence shows the suspect used a kitchen knife,” Guidry said, adding that the weapon had been recovered.

There have been prior disturbance calls made to the suspect’s parents’ home, though it’s unclear if the calls are related to Dicus or his older brother, who apparently also lives in the homes.

Investigators said they are looking to see if drugs may be a factor.

“He’s never the crazy one. He’s never the type to go do something violent. He protected those he loved and cared about,” the shocked neighbor said.

From their copious social media posts, Dicus and Diaz seemed happy. Diaz was devoted to physical fitness, sharing videos of her workouts and encouraging others. Dicus’s parents’ house is on the same road as Diaz’s aunt’s house, where the young woman lived.

Diaz’s manager at the meat market where she worked said the couple met in early 2022. When Diaz didn’t show up for her cashier shift on Wednesday, her manager called her family, and that’s when they learned about her tragic death.

For now, Dicus remains behind bars at the Waller County Jail. The Waller County District Attorney’s Office said it is still gathering evidence.

Meanwhile, Diaz’s family is planning a vigil for this Saturday at a park near her home. They have also started a GoFundMe, and hope to collect enough money to give her a proper burial.

Billie Davis More News

An 18-year-old Indiana University student was hospitalized after a woman stabbed her multiple times on a bus near the university’s campus, in an attack authorities are calling racially motivated.

According to Bloomington police, first responders were dispatched to a bus stop on W. 4th Street and the B-Line Trail around 4:45 p.m. on Wednesday on reports of an assault with injuries.

The 18-year-old victim, an Asian student at Indiana University, told investigators she was standing and waiting for the exit doors to open on a Bloomington Transit bus when another passenger, 54-year-old Billie Davis, began striking her in the head, Bloomington police said in a release.

Davis stabbed the victim multiple times in the head with a folding knife, reportedly saying it “would be one less person to blow up our country.”

The 56-year-old woman and the female student didn’t interact prior to the vicious attack, bus surveillance footage shows.

A witness who also was riding the bus followed the woman’s attacker and contacted police, who later arrested Billie Davis.

Court documents show Davis admitted to targeting the teen because of her race, according to WNDU-TV. Davis has been charged with attempted murder, a level 1 felony, as well as aggravated battery.

She is being held in the Monroe County Jail on a $1,000 cash bond.

The victim was treated at a hospital for multiple stab wounds. Her name was not released.

“This week, Bloomington was sadly reminded that anti-Asian hate is real and can have painful impacts on individuals and our community,” Indiana University Vice President of Diversity, Equity and Multicultural Affairs James Wimbush said in a statement. “No one should face harassment or violence due to their background, ethnicity or heritage. Instead, the Bloomington and IU communities are stronger because of the vast diversity of identities and perspectives that make up our campus and community culture

Bloomington is in southern Indiana. Mayor John Hamilton called behavior like the bus attack “not acceptable” and said it will be “dealt with accordingly.”

“We know when a racially motivated incident like this resonates throughout the community, it can leave us feeling less safe,” Hamilton said in a statement Saturday. “We stand with our Asian community and all who feel threatened by this event.”

In recent years, Asian Americans have increasingly been the target of racially motivated harassment and assaults, especially after the start of the coronavirus pandemic. A report from Stop AAPI Hate released in 2021 showed that 9,000 instances of anti-Asian hate crimes had been reported since the start of the coronavirus pandemic.
